Those of you whose waters broke naturally where and how did it happen?

Hi with ds my waters broke at hospital by the midwife, but for those of you that have had waters break naturally where were you, how did it happen, was there any warning before it happened and did you have contractions before the waters broke? Sorry for all the questions but am 39 weeks with dd and have started to wonder when the end will come!

with dd, 5 days before i was due, was lying on the sofa, it was about 9.15pm and all of a sudden there was a pop, followed by a warm wet feeling. by 1am i was in full blown labour.

only warning was i had an anti-natal appointment the day before and my blood pressure was high so i was sent to the hospital for monitoring for a couple of hours. they sent me home after an internal exam concluded my cervix was fine, but i've always wondered if that was what started it all off.

Mine went in 2 goes - a bit at 4am (2hours after a show) and the rest went in dramatic fashion when I got out of bed at 8am.

Am 2 days overdue and getting very paranoid about straying far from home in case they go in public...

PetitFilou1 · 19/08/2008 21:29

With ds about an hour and a half before he was born (I had already been in labour for about 6 hours) in the birthing pool

With dd, minutes before she was born, in hospital (had been in labour for 2 1/2 hours)

Smithagain · 19/08/2008 21:30

First time round - just before I started pushing, in true Niagara Falls fashion.

Second time - gently and slowly, in bed, after a few hours of rather pleasant, mild contractions that made me feel all excited and maternal. The other sort came along a couple of hours later LOL!

'kay. i had a pile. and i needed a poo, and had done for a while. i distinctly remember thinking 'if i really go for it i could actually burst this pile, which might be bad or it might be worth it'. and i went for it. and pop - WHOOSH! pile intact, poo intact, waters broke.

and because i was only 38 weeks i sat there in complete denial for some time, thinking that i'd just done a surprisingly large pee...

funnily enough 9 years ago tonight my waters broke while I was reading my 3 yr old a bedtime story, no warning and didnt go into labour until put on a drip in hospital at about midnight. by the way it was my due date too.

6 days late, I got into bed and shortly after noticed that I was getting very wet!
After that it literally gushed for ages, not nice or practical when you're rushing about trying to get your hospital bag ready!

Thelighthousekeeper · 19/08/2008 22:47

DD - Whilst making a salad at 37 weeks.

DS - Having arrived at the hospital with strong contractions I was taking my clothes off to be examined. The midwife asked if my waters had broken, I said I wasn't sure (I know, but I kept wanting to pee so I thought maybe they had!) and then there was this whoosh and I said 'they have now!' Noah was born about 10 mins later.

About 7am - 6 days after due date. Felt 'poorly' in the night - thought was starting a stomach upset. Got up and waters went dramatically on bedroom floor (luckily laminated flooring!). Phoned hospital and told to go in. As walked into ward, another whoosh all over the floor! After a couple of hours of monitoring and examinations, told to go home as not in labour. Had to phone my Dad to get me a clean pair of trousers and bring them into hospital so I could travel home as the ones I was wearing when I arrived were soaking (DH too much in shock to manage driving home to collect trousers!). Went into labour about 12 hours after initial waters breaking, DD born about 18 hours after going into labour.

lindenlass · 20/08/2008 08:59

With all three they broke as they were being born. Felt like a pop but because i was in the water, I didn't really feel anything else of it.

bluebump · 20/08/2008 19:06

Mine went at 2am on the day I was due, I stood up after doing a wee and thought 'what's that strange sensation' and then twigged when the floor suddenly became wet!

After a trip to the hospital the next day I came home having been told i'd be induced the next day to go to the supermarket to get some supplies to feel them going a bit more! I scuttled out for them to whoosh in the car park!

FoghornLeghorn · 20/08/2008 19:12

Mine broke naturally all 3 times :

DD1 - middle of the night on my sofa - just trickled, wasn't quite sure for a few hours if I had just wet myself or not

DD2 - Exploded spectaularly at my parents house - no warning whatsoever, me and my mum were looking through old photo's and WHOOOSH ! I was in a right state

DD3 (Just this Thursday) - In bed - Had just been to the loo, got back into bed and felt something trickling up my tummy (most perculiar feeling). I had a sweep the day before but there was no warning as such

Good luck with your up and coming birth

DebitheScot · 20/08/2008 20:06

I wish I hadn't seen this thread. I've got 2 weeks till due date and am getting scared about waters breaking with no warning while out somewhere embarrassing. With ds it didn't happen till very late on in the labour, well into the pushing stage. I was hoping everyone got some warning of it coming but it seems like you don't always. Will just have to keep fingers (or legs) crossed that it happens somewhere nice like on the loo.

Nappyzoneneedssleep · 20/08/2008 20:10

my first was 2 weeks early - i had a bit of a show i thought perhaps but wasnt sure so went back to bed for half an hr then got up to have a pee and whooosh - i nearly sh** my pants at the same time as kinda wasnt expectign that and was in alone - contractions std about 4 hrs later, with ds my 2nd who was 2 weeks late, had a show and contractions and waters never went till he was bursting out of my fanjo . Was in water 2nd time too.

Good luck

StealthPolarBear · 20/08/2008 20:21

in the kitchen, being sick in the sink. No warning. Loads of contracitons before (waters broke about 3 hours before he was born) but I don't think I was having one at the time.

stiggywiggywoo · 22/08/2008 18:51

in bed, I had just put my Tens machine on as my contractions were just starting and I put it on 'Burst' mode for the first time and I did quite literally.

MindingMum · 22/08/2008 19:58

DD1 37 weeks-popped while in bed in early evening and then leaked slowly for 5 hours when labour began

DD2 - 36 weeks popped while cleaning the loo so quickly sat down on toilet and DD2 fell into the toilet I just sat there looking at her and doing nothing!!!

DD3 - 39 weeks popped in the queue in the chinese takeaway

DD4 - c/s

DS1 - c/s

MindingMum · 22/08/2008 20:03

DD2 was fine by the way, it was just me who was in shock and apparently i phoned MIL and said "DD2 is in the toilet and i don't know what to do" although i have no memory of this but luckily she didn't think i'd been on the beer and had the sense to phone hospital

chankins · 22/08/2008 20:04

First two popped in labour, but with ds I suddenly felt a trickle when putting my pj trousers on, I was 5 days overdue. Wasn't sure if I had accidentally weed myself ! Sat on loo for ages just trickling. This went on for a few hours, there was no sudden pop or gush

pointydog · 22/08/2008 20:16

My waters had to be broken with dd1.

With dd2, they broke naturally about half an hour before she was born, after an average length labour.

I think I make a tough membrane.

pointydog · 22/08/2008 20:17

congrats on your recent baby, leghorn!
