Those of you whose waters broke naturally where and how did it happen?

Hi with ds my waters broke at hospital by the midwife, but for those of you that have had waters break naturally where were you, how did it happen, was there any warning before it happened and did you have contractions before the waters broke? Sorry for all the questions but am 39 weeks with dd and have started to wonder when the end will come!

Waters broke spontaneously with all 3 births. Similar to Romy7, got up at 7am to do a wee...was only when wee just wouldn't stop that I realised that my waters had gone. I was 38 weeks. With Ds1 I was 39 weeks and I felt a twinge in my stomach during night, got up to do a wee...felt a weird 'ping' sensation then a gush as waters broke all over bedroom floor. Travelled to maternity unit sitting on folded bath towel for both those births. With Ds2, had just arrived into maternity ward, had been having contractions for an hour or so and was about 3 or 4 cm dilated when waters broke and soaked floor.

No warning, except a sudden urge to visit the toilet and then the wee wouldn't stop!

The contractions started about half an hour later.

Second time they broke during the second stage, about 10-20 mins before he was born I think.

I wonder if they'd gone sooner it would have been a faster labour. It was 3.5 hours.

with DS1 - it was the first thing to happen, about 1am - had just got back in to bed after getting up for a pee. Contractions started about half an hour later
with DS2 - waters broke just as he was being born

ChasingSquirrels · 18/08/2008 17:15

ds1 - sitting on the sofa watching Buzzcocks, well it was just ending. contractions started about 30 mins later. ds1 born 2 hrs after that
ds2 - sitting in bed reading. contraactions started about 10 mins later. ds2 born 15 mins after that.
Neither time wetted the furniture, just my underwear and (first time) trousers.

No warning - I woke up at 3am 4 weeks before my due date with the knowledge that something was wrong in the world....
No big pop, just a constant trickle (luckily we'd put the mattress protector on the night before!) Mws were very scathing on the phone ("are you sure you've not wet yourself dear?" Um, yes actually) Went into labour proper about 12 hours later.

derelicte · 18/08/2008 19:07

DD - sitting on the sofa watching Richard and Judy while twiddling my nipples (in the hope that it might get things going...not because I have the hots for Madeley. Or Finnegan for that matter).

DS - right at the end. Very frequent intense contractions, needed a wee, was helped onto a commode and the waters gushed out. MWs did ask if it was a v big wee though . DS came out about 2 minutes after that.

luckymummy74 · 18/08/2008 19:07

With DD1, one week early, in bed, about 11pm as I was drifting off to sleep. No warning whatsoever....first sign anything was happening. DD1 born 10 hrs later.

DD2 (two days early), about 1 min before she was born, I was fully dilated and in hospital bed, so yes, some warning .

peanutbutterkid · 18/08/2008 19:09

After at least 90 minutes of established painful labour (3 babies);

HonoriaGlossop · 18/08/2008 19:21

in hospital, on third day of labour. Was a definite 'pop'!

spottedandstriped · 18/08/2008 20:39

On the toilet. Within 15 minutes desperate to go to hospital - no gradual build up!

Evelynsmum · 18/08/2008 20:48

Would you believe on the toilet...nice and tidy!!!

MommyHasaHeadache · 18/08/2008 21:22

Woke up needing a wee, heard a pop and then the wee wouldn't end - went on and on for ages. When I got to the hospital they scanned me because they didn't believe my waters had broken for some reason, and then looked in disbelieve as they realised I had lost almost all my amniotic fluid! Contractions started in earnest a few hours later.

Tigger13 · 19/08/2008 16:20

ds1 when throwing up over toilet, had show and was having contractions - still made me realise was really happening Ds2 led on sofa after day shopping and heard a loud pop and then a gush of water all over sofa!! ds3 woke up at 6am and thought bugger i'm weeing the bed!!

pigleychez · 19/08/2008 17:24

I was in hospital being induced. Had the gel and told nothing would happen till at least the morning.
Hour lately laying in bed ( bang on Midnight!)
felt alot of pressure then a big "pop" then an urgent need to go to te toilet. Got to the edge of the bed then felt it running down my legs Then it just kept coming and coming!
Midwife had to completely strip the bed. Contractions started immediately after.

Everyone thought it would be a quick labour as they broke so quickly after being induced but ended up having a 27 hour labour with ventouse and forceps!

zebedee1 · 19/08/2008 17:29

Mine went when I was sitting on the loo, just after having a wee (TMI) - just as well I was sat on the loo, there was gallons of the stuff!!!

fuzzywuzzy · 19/08/2008 17:33

In bed as I tried to go to sleep, it was a most peculiar feeling.
I'd not had any contractions as far as I can recall, and didnt have any more than the regular pregnancy aches and pains at the time, however I was due to be induced the next day so was very glad I went into labour naturally.

miamla · 19/08/2008 17:56

on my due date, sitting on a bed in the hospital (baby's movements being monitored) whilst trying to convince them to let me go home! Initially thought i'd wet myself and didn't want to say anything to DP!

I told the midwife etc and about half an hour later a consultant came in to break my waters for me. Told him he'd have a job and that perhaps he should go away and check my notes.

contractions had been going for 4 days but i was in denial about what the "niggles" really were! I was less in denial about 6 hours later when they started to hurt a little more than a "niggle"!

DS arrived 12 hours after waters broke

hope it all goes well for you ofsted

cece · 19/08/2008 18:01

With DS I got up did a wee and had just got downstairs into the kitchen when I had a flood all over the kitchen floor. No warning. No contractions for about 36 hours afterwards either... The they started and he was born about 9 hours later.

With DD2 I was lying on the bed and heard a pop sound. Managed to get to the bathroom before I flooded the floor. Contractions started straight away.

calsworld · 19/08/2008 18:09

I had a show on the tuesday afternoon, then contractions started overnight but stopped wednesday, then started wednesday night then stopped thursday, then started thursday night was exhausted by this point!

When they started I had a few little ones then one really strong one at 1.30 - I needed a wee so went to the loo and after I finished weeing, there was a pop and woosh and waters broke over the toilet.

DS head never engaged so I carried on leaking water for the next 13 hours until he was born by emergency c-section as he failed to engage despite mega contractions.

Show and waters breaking was about the only natural part of labour for me, I'm really glad I got to experience it! Good luck with your birth too!

mamadiva · 19/08/2008 18:15

Mine broke on my due date but MW wouldn't listen until my DS was born 6 days later and they broke my waters and were shocked when basically nothing came out.

Anyway I was shopping in Mackays for baby towles ironically at the time, no warning just thought I'd peed myself LOL. Had to rush up to staff loos after convincing manager that I didn't just need the loo then she realised what had happened. She still laughs at me when I go in now and that was over 2 years ago

chandellina · 19/08/2008 19:52

mine broke about 30 hours after i'd had a "show."
after on and off contractions for three days, they had gone to about every five minutes, though mild. fortunately the break came just after i'd gotten home from being out. it wasn't a gush, but just kept coming out for about an hour.

Elkat · 19/08/2008 21:22

DD1, whilst sat in the bath having a relax. Sat there, looking at it, trying to work out if I was weeing myself or not . Thankfully, I was not. Went into labour 24 hours later.

DD2 - In labour, in the bath of my waterbirth!

NorkyButNice · 19/08/2008 21:25

On the toilet at about 7am - I felt something pop mid-wee and the liquid kept coming after I stopped urinating! DS had done a poo so they were murky brown and the hospital told me to go straight in - DS was born less than 12 hours later!
