So I've got some energy tablets and plan to get some cereal bars but I never know what I feel like eating but am not good when hungry.

I'm also quite pukey so think that I may vomit in labour (sorr if tmi for emetophones) so want something that'll make me feel better.

What did you take?

TIA

Chocolate raisins, bananas and little cartons of apple juice. This time, will be freezing some of the juice cartons as warm juice was not what I wanted.

I took some flapjacks but didn't eat anything. Labour mostly during the night and it didn't occur to me to eat. By the time I got the toast and tea I was starving though.

After the birth, dh brought in nice organic muesli, dried fruit, fresh fruit cut up and also peppers/carrots cherry toms etc. Agree vvv important not to get constipated.

Ate nothing during labour but was glad I took a bag of food as got nothing on the post-natal ward afterwards, until the following morning. Was glad of bottled water, cartons of orange juice, weetabix (to prevent constipation) and bag of nuts/dried fruit as was starving once I started breast feeding that night. Buy anything which is long life!!!

Dragthing · 21/02/2008 22:56

I took all the stuff they recommend (dried fruit, muesli bars etc) and didn't fancy any of it. This was a problem as I was in there for 36 hours and got very hungry. I would have liked sandwiches with nice moist fillings, maltloaf, rice pudding, smoothies. I did have a lot of lucozade which sort of kept me going.

Despite being in labour for 48 hours, the last 16, when in hospital, I couldn't face anything - even struggled with fluids! I would never take anything dry again as it got stuck in my throat during a contraction! I like the sound of kendall mint cake, fruit gums and opal fruits though.

Unfortunately, I don't think you know what you want until you're there and haven't got the energy to verbalise it when you want something anyway.

I did eat all the snacks taken after the labour as absolutely starving. NHS soggy sandwiches have also never tasted so good!

kiera · 22/02/2008 09:21

oaty biscuits for energy after the birth eg hobnobs are good. plenty of sugar-free squash, if you're breastfeeding you'll get through gallons of the stuff!

kiera · 22/02/2008 09:24

ps I didn't feel like eating once labour really got going so do try and eat some small meals whilst in early stages eg whilst stil at home as you'll need the energy later but won't want to eat and you could be labouring a while! eat slow-energy-release foods like jacket potatos, beans, bananas, rice, pasta etc.

I wasn't interested in food but was so thirsty (think it was the gas and air). Make sure your partner offers sips regularly without waiting for you to ask. I'm with MrsTittleMouse - get stuff for afterwards - I could have eaten a horse.

okeydokeygirl · 22/02/2008 23:53

Ever fearful of being really hungry and at the mercy of hospital food i packed a suitcase full of healthy snacks and drinks. I vomited for 24 hours so ate and drank none of them. The next day, when I couldn't even sit up without passing out, the doctor insisted that I put away my bottle of Purdys' and told my DH to go and get me a can of Coke! It worked wonders.

mrsgboring · 23/02/2008 21:11

Didn't fancy eating and puked a bit through labour. Tea and toast afterwards were rubbish as far as I was concerned. I was on oxytocin and felt like my blood sugar was crashing. Midwives kept telling me to eat toast slowly or would puke but I thought I was going to faint so wolfed it. Puked it.

BUT I had marzipan in my bag and ate half a packet. Instant relief. Get the really nice stuff from Anthon Berg so it's not too sickly.

BoysOnToast · 23/02/2008 21:18

my labours are fast and intense, so i did not have inclination the first time, nor time the second, to eat. till after anyway.

by the 3rd in 3 yrs, was an pro tho, so ate a breakfast of olives and dried fruit (??) between contractions for the first forty minutes or so of labour, followed by a couple of pushes and out he came.
then i had a proper cooked brekkie/lunch.

god, whata smug bitch i sound. to be fair tho, tis the only thing im really bloody naturally 'good' at

rumple · 23/02/2008 22:21

I think really depends on what you like. I took loads, lots of rice pudding pot, chocolate, biscuits, bananas, orange squash and dry crackers. Didn't feel hungry so didn't eat much but labour was long so it kept my husband going. I'm so glad as I would have hated being alone if he had to search for food. he doesn't cope well when hungry.

JingleyJen · 23/02/2008 22:24

not sure if it has been suggested but I needed winegums during labour first time, everything I swallowed I vomited so Midwife sent dh to get some winegums for me to suck, they disolved in my mouth and gave me a little bit of sugar.

JustTra · 25/02/2008 14:29

I'd recomend lots of bottles of cold water, that DH bought each time he visited, the water on the ward was warm and vile.

Bananas and oatcakes for energy, then a bit of dairy milk cos you've got to keep your strength up.

Fillyjonk · 25/02/2008 14:32

oh i dont' know if anyone has recommended these, and I am NOT going to read a whole thread on labour snacks BUT

green and blacks nut and seed bars. Esp the red ones.

They have actual dark chocolate in them but also seeds and nuts, and thusly are ok. They are also pretty easy to eat, and are good for afterwards...

you know what, i never DID get my mw's special toast

AitchTwoOh · 26/02/2008 11:51

and take flip flops with you. not as a snack, but so that when you get that first blissful shower you don't stand in someone's afterbirth.
