So I've got some energy tablets and plan to get some cereal bars but I never know what I feel like eating but am not good when hungry.

I'm also quite pukey so think that I may vomit in labour (sorr if tmi for emetophones) so want something that'll make me feel better.

What did you take?

TIA

I had wine gums and bananas.
to be honest, wasn't that hungry at all, only aftewards when baby was born (best cup of tea I've ever had was after dd1 was born!)

Lulumama · 16/02/2008 19:24

i would have taken, if i had planned better!

honey sandwiches on brown bread

flask of raspberry leaf tea

energy bars good and lucozade tablets

flask of ice chips

if you are eating and drinking, make sure you wee and poo! helps baby descend if your innards are emptied regularly

i took nothing and DH ate a packet of custard creams, very ,very quietly behind the bed !

best of luck!

PestoMonster · 16/02/2008 19:25

I couldn't really eat per se, but did enjoy Opal Fruits from time to time as they were sort of refreshing!

Spink · 16/02/2008 19:27

I heart Nairns oat cakes - they have some with ginger which were good for nausea. They do cheesy ones, plain ones and fruity ones too, so cover all possible tastes & needs! I lived on them in labour and afterwards - they are low GI so you avoid the whole sugar high thing.

I was puking all the way through and so all I could even think about was energy tablets and ribena. It was DH's job to make sure that I took as much as I could, as labour was long and I was vomiting most of it back up (sorry, grim reading I know). What I would recommend is that you take in lots of food for AFTER the birth (or instruct your Mum to bring it in when she visits - my Mum brought in loads of M and S fruit salad - absolutely fab, except that DH ate half of it!). Once I had stopped being sick I was starving and scoffed a whole packet of cereal bars in one go.
The tea and toast were no good for me as I puked up the tea - so they didn't even bother with the toast. Was puking though that night too, and into the morning. Breakfast sorted me out though.

Kendal Mint Cake ! Boy did I feel I'd deserved it !

nickytwotimes · 16/02/2008 20:02

I took a veritable picnic when I was in labour and ate nothing at all as I was far on by the time I got there. DH liked it though. Kerrymum was right about the tea and toast afterwards though - best thing I've ever eaten!

BroccoliSpears · 16/02/2008 20:08

I think I ate quite a bit, but then I was in hosp, in labour for 34 hours.

I do remember being ferociously thirsty and nearly weeping with grattitude when my dddddp came in with three 2 litre bottles of frozen tap water which I drank as they thawed.

Also devoured the marmite and dairylea sandwiches he brought.

Apart from that it was mostly dried fruit, biscuits probably, fresh fruit.

Oh, and chocolate milkshake, I've just remembered!

MiMao · 16/02/2008 20:10

Hello
I brought with me my fav Organic Seeds of Change seed bars and crackers. Great to snack on especially if feeling queasy.
Good luck x

cosima · 16/02/2008 20:12

mars bars and a flask of tea

Wilkie · 16/02/2008 20:14

Take a bottle of squash - I drank LOADS during labour and the water tasted RANK.

I also attempted to eat doritos - not the greatest idea in the world when a sharp bit of crisp gets wedged at the back of your throat as you breathe deep on the G&A

Cereal bars

Mars bars

Bananas

MaeWest · 16/02/2008 20:16

I ate a few mouthfuls of pasta & veggie sauce early on, but then was feeling queasy so survived for the 24 hrs or so before DS was born on a couple of cereal bars, an apple, cartons of apple juice... and shortly before pushing, 2 polo mints.

I was quite sick in transition, which freaked me out a bit at the time, but was prob worse for DH who had to clean the bathroom afterwards

Washersaurus · 16/02/2008 20:18

I took a box of cereal bars (and ate the lot one by one throughout the night )

I was starving and everyone elses babies were keeping me awake!

Washersaurus · 16/02/2008 20:19

Oh and also took 2 bottles of water to combat the dehydrating effect of the Gas & Air

NorthernLurker · 16/02/2008 20:29

having been sick throughout all three pregnancies I am delighted to say I never threw up whilst birthing! But I didn't feel like eating anything either!
I would generally recommend escaping hospital before you need to eat there but as you never know what may happen take things you usually like in small bite size portions - you are never going to muster the energy to deal with a huge slab of flapjack. Chocolate is very good . Don't bring anything that's going to break into annoying crumbs and irritate you when you sit on them!

Sarahjct · 16/02/2008 23:35

I took Ritz crackers, Mars Bars and a bottle of squash on the recommendation of my MW...and they came back unopened. How in hades anyone has the presence of mind to eat during labour I have no clue. All I remember is squillions of paper cups of foul water. Don't think I would have been able to ask for a glug of Ribena to be added...

Gas and air makes your throat extremely dry though so schlep the squash in anyway and you might be more organised than me. Even if you love water, hospital water is not of this planet.

whomovedmychocolate · 17/02/2008 21:40

I knew they were inducing me so we went to M&S before the hospital and picked up:

  • Chelsea buns
  • Nice biscuits
  • Orange Juice
  • Chocolate gingers

Scoffed most of it before the consultant turned up and said 'no food for you sorry' for 14 hours.

Was bloody glad I did too!

Triathlete · 17/02/2008 21:59

Make sure you've tried everything beforehand. I thought I was being clever with Lucozade energy drink, but DW had never drunk it before, and it didn't agree with her - she projectile vomited it across the delivery suite. I think we still ahve 3 sachets in cupboard.

bookwormmum · 17/02/2008 22:06

I was allowed nothing in labour in case it made me puke and would have laboured without b/fast had not a fellow pg lady who was in for bedrest, kindly brought me some tea and toast when I was hooked up to a monitor prior to being induced . I had crackers with me plus a selection of fruit and a bottle of ready-to-drink fruit juice. I also made sure my birthing partner left her otherwise untouched "tuck box" for me to plough into once we'd been transferred to the ward .

For the ward, you want your own large bottle of water since I couldn't drink enough fluid by then and the water jugs take forever to be changed!!

ilovewashingnappies · 17/02/2008 22:11

I wasn;t hungry but was told to eat glucose tablets after long labour. CAN@T STAND THEM so dh came up with kendal mint cake which was delicous.

Lots of juicy stuff

MrsBadger · 17/02/2008 22:16

Lucozade sport (the ready to drink stuff that tastes like squash)

not the powdered one!

bookwormmum · 17/02/2008 22:18

Don't drink Lucozade original but try the flavoured ones. They're much nicer (if just as bad sugar-wise).

MrsBadger · 17/02/2008 22:20

lucozade sport
this one

sugar is good

bookwormmum · 17/02/2008 22:21

I haven't tried that one.

MrsB - my teeth have too many fillings already .
