My midwife advised against it. Unless you’re already on the way she said they don’t work. (Sorry, I know that wasn’t why you asked).

PurBal · 19/02/2023 20:48

*what you asked

wishuponastar1988 · 19/02/2023 20:48

My SIL had a sweep at 40 week and went into labour 8 hours later. Baby was born 6 hours lafter that so 14 hours total

wishuponastar1988 · 19/02/2023 20:49

However I think it was likely just good timing - I don't think sweeps generally do very much unless your baby is ready to come!

UrsulaPandress · 19/02/2023 20:50

Had 5. Then a section 🙄

Soubriquet · 19/02/2023 20:50

I had a sweep at 37 weeks exactly (Monday morning). He had some growth problems and needed to come out.

I went into early labour Tuesday night and spent all night awake having contractions.

Went to hospital in the morning and they gave me another sweep and put me on the ante natal ward to see what would happen.

He was born at 10.40pm that night at 37+3.

Lovely27 · 19/02/2023 20:52

I had a sweep and they told me I might feel period pain type pains afterwards. Turns out those pains just got worse and the baby was born 12 hours after the sweep!

Sierra259 · 19/02/2023 20:52

I was prepared to try anything to avoid induction so had a couple with both of mine. Went into labour spontaneously with both - pretty sure the sweep helped, especially with DC2. However, I was scoring pretty well on that score they use to see how close you are to starting labour. I think if you score low, they may not offer it?

Popskipiekin · 19/02/2023 20:53

I had a sweep at 40+4 on my request as it was just before Christmas and I was desperate! Very faint contractions started within 12 hours and baby born 24 hours after sweep, but during the sweep the midwife said my cervix wasn’t ready or something like that, so I’m not convinced sweep was related to the birth! It made me feel better to be doing something at any rate …

Hotpinkangel19 · 19/02/2023 20:54

Definitely depends whether you're ready or not I think! Baby 1 - sweep, labour 24 hours later - ish.
Baby 4. 4 sweeps. Then induction.

Has anyone had successfully sweep ? If so how long after was baby born ?

Had a sweep on my due date and 48 hours later on the dot my waters broke naturally. Had him 6 hours later :) Worked for me personally.

MissyA95 · 19/02/2023 21:12

Aww really it was my consultant said about getting it as I am getting induced the week later dues to few things but wanted to try this first but thank you

MissyA95 · 19/02/2023 21:36

Aww really this gives me some hope as wonder rather sweep work than have to induced again

Whereland · 19/02/2023 21:36

Baby needs to be very ready to come for them to be effective I reckon.. I had one at 39+4 only because she checked me and said I was very favourable and baby was very much ready to come, I went into labour a few hours later and most likely would have anyway without the sweep!
It's meant to be v uncomfortable if you're not ready

MuMmaOf3littles · 19/02/2023 21:37

I had 2 sweeps each on DC1 and DC2, both were born the day after. Had 3 sweeps on DC3, none were successful and I ended up having an induction.

cakebytheoceon · 20/02/2023 11:40

My first two babies were a week early so didn't need one. Opted for one at 40 weeks with baby 3 and I went into labour a few hours later. I agree with others though it really does depend if you're ready. I think like me, sometimes you just need that little nudge x

Thewizardssleeve · 20/02/2023 11:42

i had a sweep and she was born later that same day.

GiltEdges · 20/02/2023 11:45

I had 4. Labour finally started at 41+2 on the day of the 4th sweep (within about half an hour of getting home). I feel like I'd most likely have gone into labour that day irrespective of the sweep, but as it turned out my labour was long and difficult and ultimately failed to progress, so I ended up having an EMCS anyway.

wibblewobbleball · 20/02/2023 11:47

First baby two very painful sweeps had no effect. Second baby one tolerable sweep, waters went that night and baby arrived 24 hours later.

CupidStunt24 · 20/02/2023 13:28

Had a sweep at 39 weeks, was really uncomfortable, but was 1-2cm (second baby though) and cervix was "stretchy", but thick. Had another at 39+2 which was just as uncomfortable, midwife said the same but then lost my plug over the next couple of days. Had another at 40wks, MUCH less painful and was 3-4cm. Had another loss of something at 40+1 which the hosp wanted to check due to having already lost my plug, went in for checks and gave me another sweep. Started contracting there and then, mild but regular. Sent me home, by the time I got home contractions were strong and regular, I went back to hosp 2hrs later and was 5cm, baby was born 4hrs later.

I don't think the first 2 did much (other than help the plug come away), but the second 2 which were much more comfortable might have helped, but most likely because I was a lot more ready and would have probably happened soon anyway.

IneedcoffeeinanIV · 20/02/2023 13:30

I had one with my first, didn't do anything. Then I had 3 with my second and none of those did anything either sadly. I was induced with my second and that took a bloody week so I might just have very cosy babies that didn't wanna leave ahaha

FT123456 · 20/02/2023 13:41

I can't remember if I ended up having one or two sweeps, I had my little boy at 41 weeks and like 5 days I think.

I did have latent labour... but I think it kicked or like a day or two after the sweep could have been the sweep or just a coincidence

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 20/02/2023 13:44

With DC1 my 3 sweeps didn’t help, but with DC2 I had a sweep at 39 weeks at 39 weeks and went into labour that night; with DC3 I had a sweep at 40 weeks and went into labour within minutes.
