When did your period return after birth?

Just what the question asks.

I'm currently 12 weeks postpartum (elective c-section) and so far no period.
I am combi-feedings, currently expressing around 2-3 times a day.

I heard that if you're breastfeeding it can take longer for periods to return, but does the same apply when expressing?

Thank you for your help 🙂

I bf with dc1 it was around 5 months (a month after I started weaning) with dt I was obviously making more milk, also didn't start weaning till 6 months period started at 7 months. So both times about a month after commencing weaning.

FartOutLoudDay · 31/10/2022 23:33

6 weeks both times even though I was exclusively breastfeeding. Felt cheated!

Mmmmpavlova · 31/10/2022 23:35

Expressing will delay your period, yes - any type of milk making will.

I am 15 months PP and BF several times a day/ night and still no period. But I had very infrequent periods ever before I got pregnant

passthechoc · 31/10/2022 23:35

I was combi-feeding and it came back when my LO was about 13 months old I think. Loved those 13 months!!

RandomCatGenerator · 31/10/2022 23:36

I expressed (physically couldn’t breast feed) and fed a mix of expressed milk and formula.

Period returned at about 3 months. First one was very light - just dirtying sanitary towels really. Next one was about a month and a half later (a bit longer than my usual cycle of 35-40 days) and was a proper period.

DramaAlpaca · 31/10/2022 23:43

I was EBF and mine came back after 4 months. I felt cheated, I can tell you. Though I was actually quite pleased they had as I was happy to conceive again quite quickly, and I was pregnant again when DC1 was 7 months.

OP, I've seen quite a few threads on this and I can tell you there's an amazingly wide variation in when periods come back after having a baby. Anything from a few weeks to over two years if breastfeeding. All of it is normal.

And to answer your question, expressing will be similar to breastfeeding.

NotMyDayJob · 31/10/2022 23:47

11 months first time, 7 months second time. DD2 had a week where she slept really well and back they came. Her sleep has gone back to terrible so no I'm not bitter

Nat6999 · 31/10/2022 23:48

8 weeks, I didn't BF, it was bang on 8 weeks after giving birth.

TheBirdintheCave · 31/10/2022 23:53

Ten weeks later and I wasn't breast feeding.

Bubbles021 · 31/10/2022 23:54

13 months later but I was exclusively breast feeding and DS fed ALOT!

RambamThankyouMam · 01/11/2022 06:54

Bang on 6 months when EBF baby started on some solids.

december2022 · 01/11/2022 06:55

11 weeks and I exclusively breastfed 😭😭. Everyone is different and will depend on how healed you are. It could take months/a year

bloodyhelpneeded · 01/11/2022 07:01

Mine has just come back, 13 months later. Still bf’ing but DD has just dropped the night feed.

CakeCrumbs44 · 01/11/2022 07:01

5 months
EBF and baby walking up all night long so I was a bit annoyed that I didn't even get this small bonus as compensation!

SupposeItDoesnt · 01/11/2022 07:02

21 months with my daughter! No bottles or dummy’s. Still breastfeeding now at 3.5 years old

DeliberatelyObtuse · 01/11/2022 07:03

Em section, exclusively bf - came back at 6 weeks pp

I was pregnant the next month Blush

YeahThanks · 01/11/2022 07:05

I was exclusively breast feeding, my period returned about 15 months later, which was four months after the next baby! There’s eleven months between dcs 2 & 3 and I had no period after dc2. Listen to your midwife, breast feeding is not a form of contraception.

Theyre 21 & 20 now and m just about over the shock.

gogohmm · 01/11/2022 07:13

Dd 1 6 months, dd2 15 months. Both breastfed

Same!

CristinaNov182 · 01/11/2022 09:16

Around 7 months later and I was EBF.

and my periods have been pain free since, my endometriosis resolved itself during birth. I had no idea periods could be so nice

Beginningless · 01/11/2022 09:17

Both around 4/5 months and EBF. I was a bit bummed by that, thought I’d get ages!

ShadowPuppets · 01/11/2022 09:20

Both babies I EBF to 12 weeks and then transitioned over to fully formula fed by 4 months. Period came back exactly 4 weeks after my last breastfeed both times, I was quite impressed by the exactness, felt very organised of my body!

lilroo87 · 01/11/2022 09:21

4 months and I ebf DD so I definitely felt robbed of not having longer without

Unseelie · 01/11/2022 10:01

About 14 months.
