Extremely worried about brother's new baby. This doesn't sound good does it?

Born yesterday.
Shoulders got stuck and had to be pulled out - stopped breathing for about a minute.
Brother said it was horrid - baby was grey.
Today baby has started "shaking"
My mum is hysterical with worry.
It doesn't look good to me but I have no medical knowledge or experience.
I feel sick.
Any ideas?

sounds like shoulder dystocia, and when it is severe, the baby can be born in a poor condition. baby could be shaky for a number of reasons, i am presuming they are still in hospital? if not, they need to call 999, and get baby seen immediately..... shaking could well not be anything sinister... i hoe babe gets good medical care, and is on the road to full health very soon.
try not to panic, easier said than done, but try not to fear the worst. thinking of you

forceps delivery can soemtimes damage the neck muscles 0 but this cant be recitfied (alot of the time) it can also cause shaking.

i hope that is all it is.

Still in hospital.
Last I heard doctor had been paged but was not responding.
I've just been reading about shoulder dystocia and the possible permanent palsy which can occur as a result.
I really feel sick now.
I'm not religious but am praying like mad.

Erbs palsy (caused by excessive traction on the baby's neck during delivery with shoulder dystocia) is really not that common any more. Shaking doesn't suggest that, so try not to worry about anything as drastic as that (easy for us to say, I know)

Is he premature? The shaking could just mean that he has got too cold and needs to be in a hot cot for a bit, or it could indicate low blood sugar (which can be treated very easily one recognised).

ahh bless him, do try not to google, it won't make you feel better - so many things it could be - many of them minor. Fingers crossed for all of you.

SIL mentioned low blood sugar - hope that's it.

blood sugar sounds like a more likely cause for shaking... fingers crossed ! did she had gestational diabetes? that can mean a big baby who has trouble regulating their blood sugar?

How "normal" is it for a baby to stop breathing though? How often does this happen with no adverse side effects?
I'm partly asking so that I can calm my mother down.
She's the type who's heard stories on radio 4 and immediately fears the worst.

DS2 shook after he was born.. I was't worried,as he's done it before he was born, but midwife who whitnessed it was probably due to low blood sugar, and if it happened again he would need to go in to hospital, I presume to get some sugar into him.

She may well have had - I remember she was tested for it but can't remember the outcome

Rowlers my ds1 didn't breathe for 5 minutes - Apgar score of 2 - and had dangerously low blood sugars and violent shaking (among other things) - and my ds2 had shoulder dystocia (ouch) and then plummeting blood sugar - I know how terrifying anything like this is, because you just want to hear "he's FINE, he can go home" - but it is overwhelmingly likely that he will be fine, very soon. Honestly. I feel for you all, it's awful worrying about a tiny baby.

As repeated by the others, does sound the there was a medical emergency called a shoulder dystocia(obviously due to big baby)

The 'shaking' im presuming is due to low blood sugar and baby is observed as being 'jittery'. Baby will have been seen by a paediatrician and will be carefully monitoried and have his blood sugar checked regularly and may or may not be observed on the neonatal unit for a while. Its not uncommon and im sure he(did you say it was a he?sorry)will be just fine.

DS1 was blue, and didn't breath imediately when he was born (heart rate had dipped and he was a vontouse delivery). Did the baby sop breathing, or take a while to start breathing?

Oh meant to say, probably hasnt got any resulting palsy and anyway there are varying degrees and would be unlikely to be severe.

Rowlers, it sounds like the baby did not establish respirations rather than stopped breathing, this is not uncommon in traumatic deliveries and as your SIL was being attended by midwives/medics then the baby will have received the correct measures to initiate respirations I am sure.
