Did you tear badly when giving birth? Nervous for the answers but driving myself crazy

This thread is a few years old. If you've found this page in search of treatments and advice managing haemorrhoids during pregnancy from fellow Mumsnet users, you might find our guide to piles in pregnancy useful. Hope this helps! MNHQ 💐

No not at all. Good luck. Focus on your breathing and don’t fight the contractions.Smile

Terrible piles when pregnant all 3 times....had a slight abrasion with baby number 1....all intact with numbers 2 and 3 ....good luck 🍀

Perineal massage! Works a treat

MaryBoBary · 30/10/2021 21:11

I got 1 pile during labour (nothing at all during pregnancy) and tore to Timbuktu. I don't think there's a correlation between the two.

mrssunshinexxx · 31/10/2021 01:36

Thanks all, nervous ! Does anyone know if neat witch hazel on a cotton pad any good for shrinking them / making less angry?

I got piles while in labour. I Needed a episiotomy. I thought the anusol suppositorys were better than the cream even tho they were external piles. They cleared up after a weekish x

mrssunshinexxx · 31/10/2021 12:05

@Mrsmch123 I've tried them loads sadly
Don't do anything for me x

Witch hazel helped mine in pregnancy. Neat and wrapped up ice packs too.
I think I have blocked out how terrible getting piles felt!

Yes tore in birth but don't think the two are linked

partyarty821 · 31/10/2021 12:43

Mild piles in pregnancy and a second degree tear which healed fine. I hadn't done perennial massage and had a quick labour though which I'm sure contributed to the tear.

4 weeks pp today and piles have gone and tear fully healed so try not to worry the recovery is fine. Spritz for bits helped enormously in the first couple of weeks!

mrssunshinexxx · 31/10/2021 14:14

@bookish83 did you just put it on neat on a cotton pad? They are truly horrible don't blame you blocking them out

@partyarty821 good to know, I have spritz for bits and been spraying them on them but not helped sadly. I have been useless with the perineal massage as kept getting thrush so didn't want to be messing around up there too!

Yes neat on cotton pads and kinda sat on them for a while. I also used the topical creams and no end of lactulose.

GoodnightGrandma · 31/10/2021 14:19

No

PennyWus · 31/10/2021 14:36

I tore, but not badly. Get an inflatable donut cushion designed to take pressure off, I did need it (found it hard to get comfortable breastfeeding without it).

I also loved Tucks wipes, very soothing. And a homemade Sitz bath, just a little warm water in the bath with some tea tree oil, do that after every time you have a poo. Great for cleansing your stitches too.

mrssunshinexxx · 31/10/2021 14:49

Thanks all

I would not necessarily advise this but I used to put witch hazel on kitchen roll or Sani pad, put in freezer and then once frozen take out, let defrost slightly (so not giving self a freezer burn) and apply - so it was cold and the witch hazel which gave a teeny bit of relief 😬

partyarty821 · 31/10/2021 18:43

@mrssunshinexxx I didn't use spritz in pregnancy but found it really soothing after birth I used to spray loads on a maternity pad and it really helped!

mrssunshinexxx · 31/10/2021 20:15

@partyarty821 @Suzysuz thanks both will defo come back to this thread once baby is out I've ordered a donut cushion too

With my first I had an episiotomy but with my second I did tear but it wasn't that bad and the piles in the last few weeks of pregnancy were a million times worse than the tear. In fact I'm debating whether the piles in my second pregnancy were worse than my labour 😅.

I tried everything. I reacted to the things prescribed by GP which was horrible! Best things were Witch hazel on a pad held against them and then I used to wear a cloth sanitary pad doused in witch Hazel with those ice packs you can get for post partum, when they were back in the freezer I used little bags of frozen peas wrapped in a baby sock!

mrssunshinexxx · 01/11/2021 04:15

@Cakeandslippers here's hoping my piles are worse than my labour ! They are bloody awful things and sadly I find it abit of a taboo subject people in RL a just never speak about but I bet loads of people are wandering around with them! X

mrssunshinexxx · 01/11/2021 13:53

Honestly mine are getting worse and worse major TMI but there doesn't look like there would be room to even make a cut if I needed one without going in to pile territory ? Should I be having a section becayse of this ?! Really scared

OP posts:
Roo0996 · 01/11/2021 16:44

I had them and zero tears, only a graze that didn’t need stitches or anything.

Cakeandslippers · 01/11/2021 21:39

@mrssunshinexxx don't forget everything gets quite a lot bigger in labour! Honestly try not to worry (hard I know) when you're in labour something just takes over your body and the piles will be the last thing on your mind. If I were you I'd focus on making yourself as comfortable as you can now rather than thinking about how they might be in labour x

mrssunshinexxx · 02/11/2021 07:33

Thanks @Cakeandslippers @Roo0996 please let this happen to me 🤞🤞🤞

Call your gp, they might prescribe something stronger, honestly I had some suppositories on prescription and they went away after 48hrs. Such a relief! Anusol didn't touch mine.

mrssunshinexxx · 03/11/2021 14:13

@mia2201 mine are external
So suppositories are useless sadly. I've been using neat witch hazel which is helping with the pain abit I don't think they will ease until baby out now
And the weight isn't there x
