Did you tear badly when giving birth? Nervous for the answers but driving myself crazy

This thread is a few years old. If you've found this page in search of treatments and advice managing haemorrhoids during pregnancy from fellow Mumsnet users, you might find our guide to piles in pregnancy useful. Hope this helps! MNHQ 💐

Personally, I would encourage you to phone or talk to your midwife or GP. I had piles going into labour and I found that more painful than the contractions in the later stages. I did push for two hours which definitely didn't help. I'm usually so shy about bodily functions and didn't ask the midwife for advice but now I tell all my pregnant friends just in case they have piles and are too embarrassed to talk about it. The spritz for bitz as mentioned above helps, anusol and cool baths. You can buy lactulose over the counter in pharmacies which makes your poo go really soft and the midwives gave it to me after I gave birth as I tore (I don't believe I tore because of the piles though). I don't know if you can take lactulose when you're pregnant though as it's pretty much a pure sugary liquid but I'd recommend it post birth as it's one less worry to have when you'll be recovering.

I'm all fine now and getting ready to ttc for baby two - you'll be fine when the labour starts Smile.

Don’t worry, if you have an episiotomy the cut goes kind of sideways from your vagina, not backwards. The idea is to direct any tearing away from your arsehole, not towards it. So the piles shouldn’t get in the way.

I had piles in pregnancy and they went away really quickly once the baby was born.

I’m sure you’ve tried it but I found germaloids better than anusol.

I had them pretty bad in pregnancy and then they were even worse postpartum. I had a 2nd degree tear too and it didn't impact me at all. Didn't even feel the stitches and had no pain apart from a bruising feeling a few weeks after the birth that was more in my groin. You'll be fine and don't worry about tears etc. I only tore because I had an epidural and kept falling asleep during contractions so I forced him out after they told me if I didn't make progress in the next 3 pushes they would assist me. The quickest two hours of my life 😅

Thanks all @rom17 @GemmaRuby @liquoricecravings I've recently started using germaloids and agree it's really
Good also neat witch hazel they seem to be calm at the mo and I'm 40+4 so surely can't be that much longer to wait
I take lactulose daily x

@mrssunshinexxx you'll do great. The best advice someone gave me was to not think too much about pain relief. If you think you need an epidural, go for it. I was against it and had a bad reaction to the pessary so opted for it. Best thing I did. I felt so empowered after the birth I can't wait to do it again. Hope you will feel the same x

mrssunshinexxx · 09/11/2021 16:06

Thank you @rom17 my epidural failed in last labour so I'm not a fan but going to
Opt for perhidine if I need it x
