OK people, i think this is it!

I've been having a show since 7.30am which has not stopped at all. I've had a period-type ache all day in my tummy with slight back ache. At about 6.30pm i crashed out on the sofa and then decided to take myself up to bed for a bit coz i was soooo tired. Now i'm having mild contractions, but i've not been timing them so i'm not sure how far apart they are yet. Will get the contraction timer on the go i think!

In the first 24 hours your baby will feed about 4-6 times. Just keep doing skin to skin and lots and lots of babymooning. The feeding will pick up.

PLEASE DONT GIVE FORMULA!

Daniel only fed 3 or 4 times for 5 mins at a time in the first 24hrs, and then it picked up. Keep her close to you, go to bed with her and stay there.... im still in bed with Daniel nearly a week later!

As long as she's getting something from when she does suck for those 2 or 3 times then that's fine with me. She's had a wet nappy already so surely that must be good?

No you don't need to do that or if you do you could do it with breast milk.

As far as feeding goes, babies are often sleepy for the first 24 hours or so after birth. They're born with stores of nutrients though, so just plenty of skin-to-skin, try to rouse her a bit when she has her nappy changed and latch her on as and when. She's only getting colostrum atm and learning about who her mummy is and being in the world - she doesn't need to have formula tipped in her gob!

Crikey, she's less than a day old. I wouldn't cap feed. Just keep your boobs out and keep plugging away at it.

Babymooning is like honeymooning. In bed nekkid with the person you love for a couple of weeks! Lots of skin to skin and rest for you both. Thereby aiding your bfing. Wet nappies a good sign. And pooey ones too (lots of meconium at first then darkish brown turning to mustard coloured poos)

Yes, wet nappy good! She'll be getting colostrum in those sucks - if you're really worried, you can hand express colostrum and give that to her. But there's no need to really worry, honest - she's so fresh!

Thanx everyone. I was a bit concerned at being told to do this already and the MW's excuse was that she doesn't want her weight to drop too much and cause her blood sugar levels to drop, and Ellie ending up in hospital. Talk about trying to scare me!!!

I will pick her up now for some skin on skin. I love it when she opens her eyes and just looks at me.

IIRC your milk won't be coming in yet anyway so all the sucking is good for when that happens. Don't give formula (unless you want too.)

Aw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a quick update before i have a mince pie and another long cuddle. I put her to the breast again and this time she was latching very well and actually sucking a good few times too. I kept tickling her feet etc to try and keep her awake and it seemed to do the trick. She was at the breast for a good 15 mins or so, not constantly sucking, but sucking for a good length of that.

MW who told me to feed her formula can go and suck my cyber balls!!!

you are just getting to know each other, time at the breast is not just for feeding,but loving and finding out about each other.
