Wee or waters?!

Hi all, this is my first post! I am 40+2 weeks pregnant. This morning at about 7.30 I felt what I though was a leak of amniotic fluid and then again at 8.30 and 10.30. Each time it soaked one of the little panty liners. Trouble is that I can’t work out if it was pee and baby’s head is on my bladder or if it’s my waters? Didn’t smell like pee to me but I’m not sure. I also lost a large bit of my plug this morning too and then some smaller bits throughout the day.
I have not had any proper contractions, only braxton hicks for the last 2 weeks.
Anyone had any similar experiences? I’m wondering if I should call the midwife or not as I went exactly a week ago for what I thought was weird discharge and it was a false alarm. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I went to hospital last week and said I was a little wet, they checked and I was leaking waters. It isn't always a big rush. Definitely phone your midwife.

WildWestWanda · 18/05/2021 18:09

Call your midwife

InpatientGardener · 18/05/2021 18:11

Hang onto the panty liners and take them in with you, gross but they can tell if its waters or not. Sounds like it though!

susiegrapevine · 18/05/2021 18:13

Waters have a kind of silky feel to them if you can feel a bit that didn't go in the liner. More like lube than a liquid. Does sound like it tho.

BurningBenches · 18/05/2021 18:16

Call a MW and get it checked. I thought mine had broken at 40+9 With my second but it was just wee 😳 but they did want me to come in and gave me a sweep anyway. Baby was born the next day.

Llamasally · 18/05/2021 18:17

Yes call MW, I had the same and dithered but it was the real thing

Raaachel · 18/05/2021 20:14

Thanks everyone. I gave them a call and she said that it's unlikely to be my waters as that would soak a big pad and as it hasn't happened again recently then it can't be it 🤷🏻‍♀️ Will just have to wait until it happens again or I get contractions starting I suppose. 😩

It could be your waters. I had a "slow leak" with DS3 that started the day before they went properly.

For me it was most noticeable walking up steep hills (so pelvis on a different position). It was less fluid than you're describing and definitely wouldn't have soaked a normal pad though when they went properly they soaked through a few.

I'm guessing it's your first pregnancy so you've nothing to compare it to. If you haven't had any continence problems so far I'd think that you are correct and not the midwife.

Waters do feel different as pp have said and they tend to smell like semen.

Bobojangles · 18/05/2021 20:39

It won't necessarily soak a big pad 🤔 when my waters went with my 3rd baby it was a very very small trickle, neither myself or the midwife where sure until it had been tested (I got a much bigger leak a few hours later)

Both times that mine have gone the biggest clue as been the colour (pinky) and smell (not like wee) but it's safest to get checked

Bobojangles · 18/05/2021 20:44

Also the midwife's considerd my waters to have gone with that first tiny leak not the big gush i got a few hours later

The wanted the exact time because they like to induce if labour hasn't started within 24hours (for me labour has started once within 1hr 30 and once about 16hours later)

Raaachel · 18/05/2021 20:48

Yeah it's my first pregnancy so I don't have a clue haha. I'm going to call back in a couple of hours so that I have a pad to show, and ask to be seen. I just surprised that she was so adamant that it wasn't my waters. So odd! Hopefully I'll get someone else next time 😂 🤞

Thank you for your help guys!

Hopefully a different midwife will pick up the phone when you call back!

The same thing happened my friend and they told her it was just wee but it was her waters trickling. She ended up with an infection and so did her baby. Please do get seen to double check.

Inthesky42 · 19/05/2021 12:39

Definitely get checked as sounds like water to me. I was 'reassured' by a midwife at a similar stage to you that what I described probably wasn't but I went another week overdue and a scan showed I had no fluid left and baby had lost loads of weight. Ended up being induced baby in distress and emergency c section. Definitely get checked.

BabyMoonPie · 19/05/2021 12:47

Waters can leak slowly - mine did! There is a risk of infection if you don't give birth within 24 hours of your waters going so please do get checked (if you've not had the baby already of course!). Midwives seem reluctant to believe you at that stage - I wanted to go in but they didn't think I was far enough along and when I went in because the pain was bad I was 10cm dilated! Trust your instincts and I hope it all goes well

Raaachel · 19/05/2021 12:55

Thanks everyone! I ended up calling the Day Assessment Unit this morning who were so much more helpful and asked me to come in straight away.
I just got back. Had all the checks and not my waters just a lot of liquidy discharge apparently. They put me on the monitor too though and I'm definitely having the beginnings of my contractions which is great! 😊 Looking forward to meeting our little girl in the next few days hopefully 🤞🥰
