my dd was 8lb 13oz born.... do you think this is large for a girl also if i got pregnant again do you think they would consider this a large baby? i.e would they induce me early? also are 2nd babies normally larger than the 1st?

thanks

I think the technical definition of large is 91b these days, so could be wrong. I think rather than automatically induce you early, they would do a growth scan etc to get an accurate idea of the size, and then decide what to do. 8lb 13 is above average but not massive IYSWIM

coppertop · 08/09/2004 19:28

Ds1 was 9 days late and weighed 9lb 8oz. When I became pregnant with ds2 I had extra scans to see if he too would be a large baby. My midwife explained that as I'd already managed to have a 9lb 8oz baby without a c/s they would try to make sure that ds2 didn't get beyond that size. They were also being extra cautious because of dystocia (sp?) as ds1 had broad shoulders and needed to be freed. Ds2 was induced at 38 weeks and weighed 9lb.

Tbh the weight issue can be a bit misleading. Although ds1 was the heavier of the two boys he was long and thin and therefore easier to deliver than round and chubby ds2.

luckymum · 08/09/2004 19:30

I'd always been told subsequent babies get bigger and that was the case for me - ds1 was 8lb 6, ds2 9lb 8, and dd 10lbs. But I know of people whose birthweights were a mixture. All mine were late so that must make a difference. I don't think they would induce for a large baby unless there were other issues - one of the 'resident' midwives might know better.

Anyway nature supposed to make 2nd and 3rd labours shorter and easier and mine were certainly that. Dd arrived in less than 2 hours from start to finish!

SoupDragon · 08/09/2004 19:33

Ive replied on your other thread too.

DS1 was 10lb 1oz (only 3 days late) and I was given a growth scan at just under 38 weeks with DS2 when they estimated his size as (IIRC) 7lb 15oz at that time. My consultant offered me an induction, which I refused, and then decided on my behalf that I would be allowed a "short labour than C-section". DS2 arrived of his own accord 2 days later at 8lb 4oz.

Now, I don't know if it worked but I did have hypnotherapy 2 months before DS2s birth. One of the things written into the hypnotic suggestions bit was that the baby would arrive safe and well 2 weeks early. And he did.

lou33 · 08/09/2004 19:48

My four were all early, but they were 6lb6oz, 6lb10oz,8lb,6lb4oz. The first one was the only one near to term at 39 weeks. The others were 37,38 and 36 weeks.

Hi lilsmum - think the best thing to do is to keep bumping the thread till one of our resident midwives/doulas spots in and gives you some general advice about avoiding tears in a future delivery.

lou33 · 08/09/2004 20:12

I think my last three would have been pretty big given their weights at birth, had I gone to the full 40 weeks. My sister had a 10lb4oz girl for her third, but her fourth was smaller.

Barbaloot · 08/09/2004 20:15

my SiL's first was 11lb 2oz (ouch!). She had a very long labour and lost a lot of blood. Luckily for her the next 2 weren't bigger (though still over 9lb.). I think one of them was induced and they did keep a bit of an eye on baby size for the next two.

pupuce · 08/09/2004 20:26

Resident doula here

You can not predict if baby 2 will be bigger because you do not know how long this gestation will be... growth scans are notoriously wrong (officially by 10% but I have seen twice this year errors of 20%... and this is with my clients).

One of my record mums had her DD1 at 41 weeks and she was 10lbs, DD2 came also at 41 weeks and she was over 1 lb lighter! And come to think of it all of my last 3 mums/clients had seond babies who were smaller and had the same or a LONGER gestational period.

Size of baby and the delivery depends PARTLY on your size too and very importantly the position you are in at delivery... check this out yourself. Lie semi-recumbant on a bed and put your hand on your pubic bone and over your "vagina"... see how wide.... then squat and check the difference.... it can be 2 cm wider! (The 10 cm = full dilation is not a precise measurement girls!)

There are people who are short (5 feet) and deliver 10 to 12lbs !!!! So I would not worry at this stage, the worst is if you are convinced the next baby will be big you may well talk yourself out of a vaginal birth. I read your other thread on tearing, if I may I'd suggest you have a good chat with a clever and supportive midwife about what happened last time and how this time could and will be different

Lowryn · 08/09/2004 21:12

Hi, my first baby (DD) was 10lbs at 41 weeks. No one warned me that she was going to be big. I had a horrendous time and she got stuck. When she was finally dragged out of me (All cone headed and scary looking) she had suffered slight shoulder dystocia and had to have physio to regain full movement.
The registrar at the time told me that subsequent babies would have to be c-sections.
However! When I fell pregnant with DS the misogynist consultant sniffed and said "rubbish, you pushed one out, you can do it again!" And although I detested the little worm, he was right. I had another 10lb baby and it all went swimmingly!
The thing is, by rights DS being a boy and being a second baby should have been even bigger than he was...but, I didn't scoff as many sugary things second time round

Fennel · 08/09/2004 21:34

dd1 - 8.13, 41 weeks
dd2 - 8lb, 3 days early
dd3 - 8.2, 10 days late

so first was the biggest. and the hardest.

linnet · 08/09/2004 22:17

dd1 arrived at 41 weeks 3 days and weighed 6lbs 9oz
dd2 arrived at 41 weeks 1 day and weighed 7lbs 12oz

blossomhill · 08/09/2004 22:20

ds - 7lb 11oz - 10 days early

dd - 7lb 4oz - born on due date

dd's actual birth was easier but more painful, if that makes sense.

jampot · 08/09/2004 22:41

dd - 8lb 9.5oz at 39 weeks
ds - 8lb 12oz at 37 weeks

I'm 5'2"

Ghosty · 08/09/2004 22:54

DS was 10lbs 1/2 an ounce ... at 41 weeks (well, went into labout at 40 + 4) ... no one had any idea he would be that big and I ended up with a c/s
I convinced myself that my second child would be a respectable size of 9lbs or less and that I would have a natural birth ...
Had a scan at 36 weeks and the baby was 9lbs already by their calculations ... didn't believe them .. still convinced I would pop it out.
Was induced at 40 + 3 as the hospital insisted that they didn't want me to go over.
Still had a c/s but not surprising as DD was 10lbs 10oz.

I won't be having a 3rd as I believe I will break the 11lb barrier!

Oh ... I am 5'7 and of medium build.

KateandtheGirls · 08/09/2004 22:55

dd1 36 weeks 7lb7oz (everyone except for medical personnel saying "you must have got your dates worng." I don't think so. The first day of my LMP was January 1 - pretty easy to remember!)

dd2 39w4d 7lb6oz (so much smaller than her sister at the same gestation.)

Judd · 08/09/2004 23:09

Hi,
DD was 8lb 10oz, bang on due date, I had a diabetic pregnancy
DS was 11lb 5oz, bang on due date, no gestational diabetes.
I am 5ft 2...but no doctor or midwife ever suggested my DS might be slightly huge! (although complete strangers felt quite happy to chip in with their comments!)

Judd · 08/09/2004 23:09

Oh yes, and both emergency caesareans

efmach · 10/09/2004 09:37

ds 9lb 12oz 39 weeks
ds 9lb 12oz 39 weeks
dd 9lb 6oz 37 weeks

All hideously awful deliveries

muddaofsuburbia · 10/09/2004 09:40

8lb 8oz - 38 weeks - emergency section
I'm 5ft zilch.

My mum's 4ft 10 and both me and my brother were pushing 10lbs!

Titania · 10/09/2004 09:41

ds1 - 8lb.....4 days overdue
dd - 7lb 3oz....3 weeks and a day early
ds2 - 8lb 6.5oz...1 day early

MancMum · 10/09/2004 10:02

1st baby DS 9lb 12oz
2nd Baby DD 8lb 4oz

but my granny had 3 that went 11lb, 12lb and 13lb -she refused to have any more on the basis it would weigh 1 stone!!

Skate · 10/09/2004 14:07

Ds1 - 8lb 4oz (41 + 3 days)
Ds2 - 8lb 3oz (39 weeks)
Ds3 - 8lb 10 oz (41 weeks)

3rd birth was the 'easiest'.
