How long after birth were you discharged?

I'm currently 39+ and wanting to know how long after delivery you were allowed to leave the hospital? I've been induced in previous pregnancies so I'm unsure what the protocol is for a normal delivery assuming mother and baby are both well.

5 days due to complications with me. DS was ready to leave after 12 hours! Unfortunately we both had to stay. I won't be having anymore.

ninecoronas · 27/06/2017 22:07

7 hours and I was delighted to be home in my own bed. But had I been a bit less keen to do one, both the hospital and I might have realised that it wasn't supposed to look like that/hurt that much and I might not be on my second round of reconstructive surgery 9 months later!

Just over 2 weeks with my first. Took a while for pre eclampsia to settle its pain in the ass down. About 36hrs with second baby.

MiniMaxi · 27/06/2017 22:17

Two weeks. But DS was 6 weeks prem and I had C section complications.

ChainingDaisy · 27/06/2017 22:19

8 hours and 4 hours.

HesHerLobster · 27/06/2017 22:20

Dd 12 hours
Ds 16 days

Neuroticwoman · 27/06/2017 22:35

1st 3rd degree tear 60 hours
2nd elective cs 30hrs (but insisted as Christmas Eve)

Stayed 3 days after DS was born by EMCS. This was a combo of me needing to recover as I'd also been in labour for a week, and DS needing additional observations for 72 hrs because my consultant had prescribed me codeine during my pregnancy and they had to make sure there weren't withdrawal affects.

With dc1 I was in for 5 days as I was streb b +ve
Dc2 was born at 9pm and we were discharged at midday the following day. We would have been out first think but his cord blood came back rh+ and I'm rh- so we needed to wait on anti-d.
Dc3 was born at 9am and we were discharged at 3pm same day.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 27/06/2017 22:39

3 days. DS was in SCBU and I wanted to stay in to gain confidence in how to care for him.

BikeRunSki · 27/06/2017 22:45

7 days (emcs, DS refused to feed, lost 26% of his birth weight, jaundice)
5 days (crash section, uterine rupture, secondary surgery required to remove drain; baby fine!)

Missmac84 · 27/06/2017 22:52

I was kept in for 24 hours after my first but that was because I had a spinal.

With my second I was out within 3 hours - that was a natural and fast delivery xx

glitterglitters · 27/06/2017 22:54

In and out in 11 hours. Would have been sooner but we had to wait for admin staff to come in.

NotEvenListening · 28/06/2017 07:34

Thanks for all of the replies. My induced dc didn't arrive until 11pm and 9.30pm so we were kept in overnight then waited for doctor checks and paperwork and it was late afternoon to be discharged, so around 30/32 hours after I arrived. I hate hospitals and was desperate to leave. Hopefully everything goes smoothly, not long to go now Smile

Because I had pre-eclampsia with Dd, I had to stay for 2 nights to ensure things were returning to normal as my kidneys had stopped working and my BP needed to be monitored.

With Ds I chose to have 2 nights but they said i needed 1 at least due to having diamorphine.

silkpyjamasallday · 28/06/2017 09:20

I gave birth at 11pm and left the next day at about 4 or 5 in the afternoon. I did discharge myself though as the care I was receiving was pretty appalling and the ward was nearly 30 Celsius! I had wanted a homebirth but dd arrived two days before we moved in.

smellsofelderberries · 28/06/2017 12:36

I was 5 days but had a PPH and needed surgery. Lost almost 2L of blood! (That isn't common though OP, don't worry!) was desperate to break out when we were finally discharged

TaggieRR · 28/06/2017 12:38

About 7 hrs with DC 1 and DC 2 was born at 11pm, I was discharged at 3pm- just waiting for someone to do paperwork for most of it!

UndersecretaryofWhimsy · 28/06/2017 12:42

Normal vaginal delivery, they would have happily discharged me after 3 hours but I opted to stay overnight to get help with feeding. (Gave birth just before 6pm, discharged to postnatal around 9pm.)

NotCitrus · 28/06/2017 12:42

Dc1 had to stay in for 3 days with antibiotics after a scare just as we were about to leave the recovery room (ventouse delivery), so I had to stay too.

Dc2 - was hoping to avoid staying overnight but by the time I stopped puking it was 11.30pm so slept there. By the time I'd snoozed in the morning and felt up to going and argued over heparin injections it was about 6pm when we got home, so dc1 stayed at grandparents for another night. If I'd accepted the need for jabs without question (or walked out against medical advice) then could have been home after lunch. The care was excellent that time though.

MirandaWest · 28/06/2017 12:45

With DS I was in two nights but tbh probably should have stayed longer (various complications and a blood transfusion but I'd been in for a week before he was born so wanted to go home).

DD was born at 1:30pm and was straight forward delivery. Probably could have left that day but was quite happy to stay the night and have just her and me (and other babies of course). Went home midday ish the next day

DoubleHelix79 · 28/06/2017 12:53

We stayed for two nights after a vaginal delivery, but only because DD had trouble latching for the first day. Otherwise they'd have discharged me the next day (birth was at 6 pm). This was in London, this year.
