How long after birth were you discharged?

I'm currently 39+ and wanting to know how long after delivery you were allowed to leave the hospital? I've been induced in previous pregnancies so I'm unsure what the protocol is for a normal delivery assuming mother and baby are both well.

OP posts:

5 hrs first time and four hours the second. 2nd degree with both.

PortiaCastis · 27/06/2017 21:07

6 hours but that was because of paperwork, gave birth in ambulance after very quick labour.

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 27/06/2017 21:07

24hrs with DC1 and around 11 after having DC2. Both were cold though so they wanted them to warm up before discharge. Just stuck them down my nightie to warm them up [smle]

NoCapes · 27/06/2017 21:08

Doilooklikeatourist · 27/06/2017 21:08

About 3 and 1/2 days with first ( had tear , blood loss and needed a transfusion )
2nd baby I was in a grand total of 3 hours !
Baby born an hour after we got there , and we went home 2 hours later at about 10-30 at night
Had a huge plate of bread and cheese and a glass of Ribera when I got home to celebrate !

shamoffour · 27/06/2017 21:08

Dd1-5 hrs.
Dd2- 24 hrs I had gestational diabetes so they had to monitor our sugars.
Ds1-12 hrs he was 10lb8 they had to keep an eye on him as he was so big.
Ds2-5 hrs.

I had very straight forward births with all of them and no stitches/tears.

BelafonteRavenclaw · 27/06/2017 21:13

24hrs with DS1, 2nd degree tear but no other issues

12hrs with DS2, 2nd degree tear, normal birth but DS2 needed his blood sugar tested as he was a big boy and he pooed during labour so they needed to observe him for the first 12hrs.

gandalfspants · 27/06/2017 21:13

12 hrs. Would have been sooner but I couldn't produce the required amount of urine.

aftersomeadvice1 · 27/06/2017 21:14

4 hours with my first, 20 hours (overnight) with my second. I stayed overnight with second by choice but both straightforward births

n0rtherrn · 27/06/2017 21:16

I was in for 3 days and 2 nights following the birth.

I had a complicated labour with assisted delivery and a tear so they wanted to monitor me.

The baby had a heart murmur that needed further checking, and if I didn't stay overnight I would have to keep going back in the following days as an out patient. Just made sense to get everything done there and then.

Had that not happened, we would probably have gone home without any overnight stay. There wouldn't have been reason to stay.

I was a bit pissed off that once we had both been given the all clear (at 11am the last day) we were refused discharge because 'the paperwork would take too long'.

I was made to stay in for about 8 extra hours, holding up a bed, rather than discharge us. It made our first night at home a little crap because we got home so late and wasted all that time sat on a hospital bed waiting around.

lolalotta · 27/06/2017 21:17

I reached hospital at 4.30pm, baby was born at 5.10pm, were we're home by 9.00pm, which was lovely, her sister was able to meet her at home the next morning, but it turned out she was really poorly, we didn't find out until her six week check. I do wonder if we'd stayed in longer if it might have been discovered.

B19M · 27/06/2017 21:18

1st-8 night stay-difficult birth & complications 😕
2nd-2 nights-less difficult but not straightforward.

Vintagegoth · 27/06/2017 21:19

6 hrs after birth each time. I was in a rush to get home.

Lules · 27/06/2017 21:19

5 days but it was a difficult birth for us both.

user1486076969 · 27/06/2017 21:20

4 nights!

Bluntness100 · 27/06/2017 21:25

Literally a month, but it's a long story. Eclampsia that didn't go away after I delivered, amongst other things like an infection, kidneys stopping functioning correctly, haemorrhaging etc. And then I had to keep going back to hospital and getting checked for a year.

Needless to say I didn't have a second.,,😁

RoseVase2010 · 27/06/2017 21:28

I gave birth Tuesday PM and was discharged Friday afternoon.

I had stitches and I think I lost a lot of blood, son was in NICU and I was sent home without him. Not really sure why I was in so long as I took the blood loss in my stride, they seemed a bit bemused that I was walking around and not in a wheelchair!

Tantruminateacup · 27/06/2017 21:32

I just had DC 3 in December. She was born at 6.30pm and by 9.30pm I was home of the couch with wine & pizza.

MamaHanji · 27/06/2017 21:32

Checked into hospital at 1am
Baby born at 5:11am
Discharged at 12am
It took longer to get the paperwork sorted for me to go, than it did to have the baby! That was a quick natural birth with second degree tear. I just wanted to get out of there and go home to my toddler with her new sister.

Rockspin · 27/06/2017 21:33

Dd1 was born at 2.45am after an induction, no tears, we needed her blood sugars tested because of GD but all OK so home by 7pm.

Dd2 was born at 7.55am after an induction too, and again no tears and she needed bloods tested because of GD and we were home by 6.30pm - would have been more like 5pm but I had anaemia and my blood results were a bit delayed.

I was keen to leave asap both times and all midwives were really supportive and seemed to do all they could to make it happen.

MadisonAvenue · 27/06/2017 21:33

First - discharged the following day but he was transferred to a SCBU at another hospital so we didn't actually get home until a week later.

Second - 6 hours, and I was only there for 4 minutes before he was born.

MrsPringles · 27/06/2017 21:34

My son was born at 4.03pm, we were back home in our own bed by 11.30pm same day

I couldn't wait to get out!

Thegiantofillinois · 27/06/2017 21:41

12 hours dc 1 (born middle of night). About 20 hours dc 2 (wouldn't latch and thrt wouldn't let me go until he did).

carrotcakecupcake · 27/06/2017 22:00

First time I was kept in for a few nights as DS was being monitored for jaundice; was brilliant for getting support with breastfeeding. Second time we were home less than five hours after delivery, probably would have been faster but midwife kept getting pulled into other things while trying to sort out our discharge and referral for tongue tie.

Crumbs1 · 27/06/2017 22:02

D1 six days
S2 24 hours
D3 4 hours
Twins 48 hours
D6 1.5 hours
