What does waters breaking feel like?

Might seem stupid but I'm 38+ with ds1 and I'm terrified I'm going to not know my waters break. I know some people say it feels like you've wet yourself etc but I don't want to rely on my trousers getting wet or a wet patch on my seat. So what did it feel like for you? Like you'd missed the loo or is it completely different? Tia

Massive gush of water. Didn't feel anything as I was asleep at the time. The noise of it pouring onto the magazines on the floor by the bed woke me and I initially thought I was peeing myself!

savagehk · 01/06/2017 21:31

First time went while cooking, very wet below as if I'd wet myself, but it wasn't wee and kept leaking (not like discharge either).
Second i lay down in bed and felt a pop, thought either that's my pelvis clicking or... Felt a bit wet, got up, more leaking.
In my case anyway i definitely knew both were waters.

girlandboy · 01/06/2017 21:32

First time an audible pop and then a gush as I sat down on the floor. Second time the midwife broke them and they flooded out onto the bed with my dh saying "bloody hell!" Felt like a huge release of pressure.

Dontflyjet2 · 01/06/2017 21:33

First time they gushed out all of a sudden and wouldn't stop! I was actually confused and thought I might be wetting myself but couldn't stop the flow.

Second time I was on the loo and felt an odd sensation almost like something gently burst and a small amount of liquid came out. I remember thinking that I'd never wee'd like that before. It was only ten minutes later in bed when I felt another trickle that I realised what it was 😄

Both times I had no signs of labour prior to my waters breaking but contractions came on fast and furious an hour or so after.

superram · 01/06/2017 21:33

Woke up at 2am thinking I had either wet myself or had an especially sweaty fanjo! Stood up and sudden gush. No contractions for 2 days so was induced. Second time was emcs.

Duploprincess · 01/06/2017 21:33

Intense weird pressure and then a pop. First time I had polyhydramnios and it flooded the bed in a tidal wave. Contractions stated instantly after.

Second time they popped just as the needle for an epidural was about to go in. I'd been contacting for an hour. The guy doing the epidual fled...the midwives rushed in and baby arrived ten mins and three pushes later.

AprilLudgateDwyer · 01/06/2017 21:33

It all gushed out when I sat on the toilet, both times!

InDubiousBattle · 01/06/2017 21:34

I felt like water was dribbling out of me when I got up to to to the loo. It kept on leaking so we rang the labour ward and whilst I was on the phone there was a gush and lots of water followed.

kitkat321 · 01/06/2017 21:34

Mine went at 39 weeks as I was unloading shopping from the car - was a proper pop and whoosh job - was amazed how much fluid there was and very relieved it hadn't happened 10 minutes earlier while I was in the supermarket!

primaryboodle · 01/06/2017 21:35

My waters broke about 1 hour after intense contractions and 10 minutes before baby came - super quick labour but my god the pressure from the waters was worse than pushing the baby out! I literally gave birth to my sac! which splattered all over the student midwife

BattleaxeGalactica · 01/06/2017 21:37

Woke up with a tiny pop and a leak. Went to the hospital where they decided ds had kicked my bladder and I'd wet myself (which I knew hadn't happened Hmm). Got home, sat down and a massive unstoppable flood unleashed. No doubting it then Grin They said the first trickle had been a hind water break.

The next two times they broke them in hospital. Gallons.

randomsabreuse · 01/06/2017 21:37

Was during labour once I was about 7cm. Definite pop sensation.

Passthecake30 · 01/06/2017 21:39

Whilst in labour I needed a wee, ran to the loo, stood in front of it and they gushed out on the toilet floor Grin oops ha ha.

2nd labour, my water seemed to have disappeared. I had an upset stomach for the whole day before and the mw said that I probably lost them down the loo...

Joinourclub · 01/06/2017 21:41

Mine burst like a water balloon-pop!- right at the end of labour. Then it was time to push!

OhTheRoses · 01/06/2017 21:43

First time after a day of contractions and when ghe midwife had examined me and said no dilation, go home. Justvas we left the maternity department there was just a gush like niagara falls.

Second baby they broke spontaneously at 27 weeks.

Third baby they broke early in labour in hospital. Niagara plus. The midwives wede in stitches - and then the hind watérs went. They had to get a mop and bucket.

LapCatLicker · 01/06/2017 21:44

I woke up thinking "I've peed myself". Then I thought "wait a second, i never pee myself... it must be my waters breaking". So I sat up and leaked some more and continued leaking for 48 hrs until DS came.
You'll KNOW.

Changingagain · 01/06/2017 21:47

Mine went before labour started. I was doing a wee and realised it didn't feel like I was still weeing but liquid was still coming out. Realistically I knew what it was, but I went into denial and decided the bathroom radiator needed painting right then. I phoned the labour ward once it was done though.

Luckystar1 · 01/06/2017 21:48

I had 2 water births, and my waters gave only gone right at the end, but it was almost like pooping a spot (on a much bigger scale...!) like a weird relief but not really sure why!

healthyeating · 01/06/2017 21:49

First time I was having a wee. Thought something may be happening as I was sure I'd finished, but kept going for a little (if you know what I mean). Wasn't confirmed, though, until I was checked a few hours later by a midwife (they didn't believe that they could've gone).

Second time the midwife broke them. I was expecting some sort of pop, or gush, or something. But nothing! I had to ask whether she'd done it or not!

annlee3817 · 01/06/2017 21:49

Mine broke slowly, I got into bed after going to the toilet and felt a gush, the liquid was blood tinged. Everytime I moved or got up, more would come out. Contractions started thirty mins later, the broke fully two hours after the contractions started, I kept feeling like I should cross my legs and kept stopping on my way up to the birthing unit as thought they'd go in the middle of the corridor. Just before the midwife examined me, I had a big contraction and they popped properly all over the bed and off onto the floor.

MoonlightMedicine · 01/06/2017 21:54

A pop and a huge gush. No mistaking it!

NameChange30 · 01/06/2017 21:55

I woke up with bad cramps, and when I got out of bed, felt a trickle of liquid down the leg of my PJs. I think it was my waters leaking, not breaking. Then the cramps turned into contractions and I had another leak. But my waters didn't break completely until an hour or so later when I'd got to the birth centre and had a really strong contraction - it was unmistakable, there was a gush of liquid that soaked my leggings.

I think it's very unlikely your waters will break out of the blue and you'll probably have contractions first.

crazypenguinlady · 01/06/2017 21:59

I was on the floor having food, stood up and felt a definite trickle of liquid (definitely wasn't pee!) Which the community midwife confirmed an hour later. My waters went 'probably' several hours later when my contractions were on top of each other, when i was probably about 7-8cm about half an hour before birth. It felt like a balloon of pressure, a loud pop, massive gush of water and instant release of pressure.

teenybean · 01/06/2017 22:01

First time, they went whilst I was contracting, there was just a massive gush (I looked at oh, started crying & told him I thought my waters had gone, but I definitely wasn't weeing, oh just laughed at me & said he knew!) Baby came 2 hours later, 6 hours from very fist sign.

Second time, I sat in bed with oh, said I felt funny & was going to get out of bed, as soon as my feet hit the floor & I stood up, there felt like a pop & then there was a massive gush, like a waterfall (like in the movies!) Then contractions started about 30 mins later & baby came about 6 hours after waters breaking!
