Passing clots after childbirth - ( Warning graphic )

DS was born 5 days ago, today i have passed what i think is a clot i know it's normal to pass small ones but this was huge about the size of a fist and looked like jet black jelly. Sorry i know that is gross. Is it normal or should i mention it to the midwife tommorrow?

anything bigger than a 50 pence piece should be mentioned to your midwife........

is your lochia very heavy still....

do you have any pain, tenderness or feverishness?

I think that it is normal - I seem to remember some really large ones, but my mw told me to mention any that were larger than a 50p to him to make sure.

I don't have anything more than mild period type pains, i have suddenly become quite sore down below i wasn't beofore but i figure the bruising is starting to come out. No fever or anything.

Lochia still quite heavy like a period very dark, thick, blood.

all sounds par for the course....did you have stitches?
are you taking arnica?

Just to echo what the others have said - about 4 days after DS1 was born I passed a clot about the size of a fist too, and phoned the midwife in a panic (having been told to mention anything bigger than a 50p) and she just brushed it aside (not literally - ugh!) and said it was common.

Defo mention it tomorrow, but it's probably nothing.

i dont want to worry you, ive had 2 kids and if i passed one that big i would be worried.
sorry but i personally would definately call midwife or whoever. i am a bit of a worry wart though.

Not taking arnica but do have some arnica cream for the bruising.

I just had 1 stitch and a few small grazes on the perineum. (sp?)

I will mention it to the midwife tommorrow but like you say it's probably fine i don;t feel unwell or anything.

sure all is well......try arnica tablets if you can get some..really good for healing.......xxx and i bet nothing would be as bad as the SPD anyway!

It's probably absolutely fine as long as you're not feeling unwell - no pain (apart from the bruising etc ), no temperature, feverishness, no bright red (i.e. 'brand new' blood), etc

However, it's always best to mention anything like this to your mw - she won't mind!

I passed a huge clot - the size of my hand! (Sorry for TMI) a few days after DS was born and called the hospital in a panic thinking something was very wrong! - the MW told me that it was probably okay because I had been feeding DS (which obvioulsy stimulates the uterus) and sitting down so that the blood "pooled" - for want of a better description - she said it was normal and, as there was no other associated pain like headaches, fever etc. I should be fine - and I was. So mention it to your MW, but don't worry - I am sure it will be okay.

I passed hug ones for days. I was told if it is smaller than a grapefruit don't worry.

I had quite a nasty uterine infection after DD2, thanks to pieces of placenta left inside. With DD1 I passed black jelly like clots, big ones worth worrying over and was fine. With DD2 I passed pale beige type coloured ones that reminded me of "liver" (sorry sorry, need to be graphic to explain). It didn?t smell, were frequent and some small 5p ones, some really big fist size. I knew it was diff as it was a diff colour, also soon developed nasty prolonged head ache, massive high temp, started to throw up, mw could feel my uterus was still enlarged and not going down properly. Antibiotics cleared it up but only just escaped being taken into hospital - I pleaded and pleaded with the GP!
Any changes in clot type or colour, really big size, any high temp, unwell, being sick, then speak to someone.

midwives were not intersted although it scared me a bit at the time

i had this too quite biggish clots in hospital and i "saved" a biggie one to show midwife then passed what felt like a small child after i got home

I passed something that size after my c/section (a couple of days after) ... as I was still in hospital and the midwife was with me at the time she took it away to check it and it was fine.

However, 2 weeks later I was still passing large clots and from a scan they discovered I had 'products of conception' (eew) which is unusual after a c/s as they 'hoover' you out when they stitch you up (double eew) ... They didn't want to do a d&c so soon after the c/s so I was taken in for a couple of days on IV antibiotics just to make sure .... and then monitored carefully for a week or so after to make sure I didn't get an infection ... all fine in the end

Definitely tell your midwife

I heard the same thing about 50ps so when I passed enormous clots after dd2, when i rang the hospital they said not to worry unless it was the size of a DINNER PLATE!!

Hi, I passed what seemed like huge lumps of liver after DS was born. I rang the midwife and she said to keep them so she could see them (to ensure they weren't placenta still left inside). She examined them and said they were just bits from the wall of the womb.

I don't want to worry you but I passed a satsuma sized clot 2 days after birth and was told to keep any further ones to show the midwives.

There weren't any more and the bleeding was decreasing until exactly 4 weeks after the birth when I passed a enormous clot and started bleeding very very heavily.

I phoned my dh and he raced home from work. We had to call a ambulance and when they arrived I passed out for about 5 mins and woke up with an oxygen mask on my face, very scary!!

I had an ERPC at hospital and it turned out there were bits of placenta left inside.

I was awake during this, as I had a spinal and it took a while to stop the bleeding. Luckily I recovered very quickly after this.

It was frightening and potentially serious I dread to think what would have happened if i had been on my own.

It was my first day on my own with ds, my mum was staying with us but she had left the day before and dh had gone to work, i was really pleased with how i was coping with ds on my own that day.

So I would defintely tell the midwife to be on the safe side.

I had this too. Looked like a piece of liver & was accompanied by very heavy bleeding, I was horrified - but nothing else happened & midwife said not to worry too much. She said not to leap around too much - but that's not always easy with a toddler to entertain as well!
