TENS machine

Does anyone know if you have to buy a TENS that specifically states it is for childbirth, or do they all do the same job?? Sorry if that is a really dense question but there seems to quite an increase in price for ones marketed as for childbirth so wanted to check!

I think the ones for childbirth are strong as they aren't for long term use.

You can hire them from a lot of pharmacys now, tesco and mothercare also have a hire service.

Elle tens have a boost button and are meant to be the best.

I hired one last time but just thought if check prices to buy and there isn't a huge difference from what I remember paying last time.

I've got a regular TENS machine, and have also used Maternity TENS machines. They are very different. Not just in the power (Maternity is stronger), but in the pattern of tingles and in the boost function. I'd definitely go for the specialist machine each time.

But try it out as soon as you hire it. I had one which had a loose connection and kept disconnecting mid-contraction. Useless!

I've seen on the Boots website that their TENS maternity machine is £30 to hire but only £39 to buy. Has anyone used the Boots one and would it be worth buying? I want to try a water birth as well, but knowing that I could be at home first for a long time means I want to give it a go for pre pool pain relief. And also if I end up unable to get in the pool or hate it for some reason I'll have it with me. I'm pretty much preparing for any birth eventuality I think!

Redling I've hired the Boots one twice so can recommend it- nice and easy to use and for me v effective until about 7/8 cm.

I've just bought a Mama TENS from a friend for dc3 labour- cheaper than hiring again- and wish I'd just bought one with dc1 now!
