Had a nightmare labour last time with a 9.5lb heifer who got stuck! Was my 3rd baby so was not expecting it after 2 normal (8lb 10 & 8lb 6) deliveries.

Just been told dc4 is rather large and I'm fretting.

Have only ever given birth lying on my back and I'm determined to do things differently this time so hopefully that will help but in the meantime can anyone give me reassurance that late scans are not always a good indication of size?

I was told ds2 was about 10lb and the consultant strongly pushed for ELCS (I wanted VBAC). I had the CS and he was 8lb.

duchesse · 04/03/2013 18:07

The other way around but DD2 was predicted to be 5lbs after a growth scan at 38 weeks, and was born 3 weeks later weighing 7lbs 9oz. Hmm

A friend had her "IUGR" "4lber" last week, weighing 5lbs 12 oz. A week after her last scan. Again Hmm.

lljkk · 04/03/2013 18:08

From 34 wk scan I was told DS would be 9-10 lb & he came out 6.5 lb. Hmm

yoyo123 · 04/03/2013 18:17

I was told I was expecting a very large (probably) boy..2 weeks later my 7lb 1oz daughter was born.

EstoyAqui · 04/03/2013 18:20

DS was predicted to be 10lb+ I gave birth less than 24hrs later and he was 8lb8oz.

Bluemonkeyspots · 04/03/2013 18:21

I asked for a rough weight and she took measurements then just smiled said it was a big baby and ushered me out the room, which made me think she was to scared to tell me [sob]

My boy was predicted to be 9lb 10 oz at 40 weeks. Arrived at 38 weeks and weighed 10 lb 5 oz!

Flisspaps · 04/03/2013 18:36

Scans can be wrong - either way.

DS was predicted to be 9-10lb.

He was 11lb 7oz.

I wouldn't fret OP. The problem you had last time - was it purely down to size or crap positioning (of the baby?)

FWIW DS was born vaginally, with forceps because he was lying awkwardly and considerably fewer post birth issues for me than with 8lb 2oz DD. A BIG baby (not a little 9lber Grin) doesn't automatically mean problems in labour.

Jbck · 04/03/2013 18:40

DD1 I was constantly being asked how big siblings were, how big DH and his siblings were. Have an underactive thyroid which can give rise to big baby, eventually said to midwife just hiw big is big. Smiled and sais "don't worry theydon'tmean 15 pounds or anything.
DD BOrn at 40 plus 10 after EMCS at 7lbs 11! Fear of God had been completely uneccessary.

snickers251 · 04/03/2013 18:57

Ds was predicted to be a 10lber, was pleasantly surprised when he came out at 8lb9 after being induced at 39wks Smile

littlemefi · 04/03/2013 19:03

I found out dd was breech at 39 weeks and was told she was at least 8 lb 3, had a ELCS as I'm only 4' 10", and told wouldn't be able to deliver normally.
On arrival she was 6 lb 12, she looked tiny next to the 8 lb babies in the same bay!

BearPear · 04/03/2013 19:22

My DD was supposed to be "at least" as big as DS who was 8lb 1oz. She was 7lb 1oz

On a different note two of mine WERE big. 10lbs and 11lbs 4oz. Both came out pretty easily and neither got stuck, so it might not happen again.

Littlefish · 04/03/2013 19:34

All the way through my pregnancy the midwife told me I wouod have a big baby - at least 9lbs. She also told me I would have a long, hard labour as dd was spine to spine. That was helpful, wasn't it!

In the end, I did have a long labour (5 days of stop/start contractions), but it wasn't particularly hard. I had a water birth with gas and air and from being 9lbs +, dd was a petite 6lbs 10!

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 04/03/2013 19:37

My 9 and a half pounder turned out to be 6lb1oz! Confused

EnglishGirlApproximately · 04/03/2013 19:41

Ds was apparently so big I had to be induced. I was unconvinced as I wasn't that big and had only put 9lb on but I agreed. Only he didn't want to come out and I ended up with an emergency c section after being in hospital for 6 days. He was a very average 7lb5oz, and only 8 days early in the end. If I have another baby and induction is advised I will politely decline and take my chances!

Rosie55 · 04/03/2013 19:42

Was told DS would be around 9lb 8oz, but that I would "probably be capable" of delivering him. He was born at term and was 7lb 11oz.

olivo · 04/03/2013 19:45

I had regular scans as I had gestational diabetes and polyhydramnios. DD was predicted to be about 9 1/2 lbs, she was 7lb2. Grin

Wookiee101 · 04/03/2013 19:45

Had gestational diabetes (diet controlled) during my pg with DS2 so had scans to check he wasn't too big. Was told at 32 weeks that he was already over 7lb so was going to be big. Also measured big with theIr tape measure.

Born a few weeks later by ELCS and was 6lb 4oz - really scrawny, and really struggled in the first few weeks to put on weight. He looked like a little alien with his bony head and big eyes!

DS1 was 8lb10oz via EMCS. A MW asked me if they had the same father due to the difference in weight.

It may be that your scan is wrong, as a PP said, it can go either way but as I understand it the position of the baby may be different so you at nt have the same outcome. Could you chat to a midwife about your worries? Maybe they can put your mind at ease? Good luck OP!

ScentedNappyHag · 04/03/2013 19:50

MW advised DD was going to be 'a whopper', she was born at 6lbs 1oz Grin

MeanAndMeaslyMiddleAges · 05/03/2013 00:54

I was told my ds was going to be huge, based on bump measurements and the scans. Turned out they'd been measuring my bump wrong - due to various health issues I had a few more scans in my last 2 weeks and was told he might be small. He was 5lbs 9oz and so small I delivered him myself no pain relief I like to crowbar that in whenever possible because it's the most interesting thing I've done since being a teenager and in reality I am a wimp normally

crazy8 · 05/03/2013 01:28

I was told my DD would be a big baby as I gestational diabetes. I had weekly scans and she was born weighing 5lb 10oz!

mrsjrob · 05/03/2013 03:27

My sister was induced 3 weeks early due to baby measuring 10lb+ at scan, her baby girl arrived on Friday weighing 8lb 11 so not as big as they thought

blackcurrants · 05/03/2013 03:40

Well both mine were around their predicted weight, and both were big (first 9 lb, second 10 lb 7oz) but the first was a miserable induction where I had top labor on my back and two hours pushing, second one positively whooshed out in three pushes, after an hour sitting upright (in the car!) , less than two hours total labor! Sorry you had one hey stick, doses sounds like position rather than size, maybe.
Are you planning on using water tubs? Friends say they felt very free to move about in water. I was planning to with the second, but we barely made our too the hospital Grin
