Had a nightmare labour last time with a 9.5lb heifer who got stuck! Was my 3rd baby so was not expecting it after 2 normal (8lb 10 & 8lb 6) deliveries.

Just been told dc4 is rather large and I'm fretting.

Have only ever given birth lying on my back and I'm determined to do things differently this time so hopefully that will help but in the meantime can anyone give me reassurance that late scans are not always a good indication of size?

Thanks everyone (well most of you, some of you were not playing the game ;) )

The baby is still giving massive movements so I thought that meant it can't be too big yet.

Have had two miserable inductions and one easy labour (the one I went myself) so I'm hoping by refusing induction for as long as possible and keeping mobile I will give myself a easier time. Even if i am giving birth to a preschooler!

My third baby was predicted to be 10lb and was induced on my due date to stop him getting any bigger. He only weighed 6ib 4oz. In reverse my first baby was predicted to be about 4ib. They even took me round the special care baby unit to show me where he would need to go when he was born. He was born weighing 7lb 11oz. The scans are not that acurate at predicting size, I think it is a best guess, the same as the midwife feeling how big the baby is.

I was told DD was at least 10lb already when I was 39 weeks. I delivered at 40+12, she was 8lb 3oz (just) - but she was and still is long/tall (in 2-3 month clothes since about 18 months)

DS1 was 9lbs 11. Early growth scans for DS2 indicated an 8.5lb-er. My consultant said it would be "remarkable" if I had a baby that weight given the size of DS1 and my very high BMI. He came out at 40+5 at 7lbs 8!

My midwife wouldnt comment on the size of my baby, but I measured big for my dates and she made a few comments like 'your bump is all baby', 'cant feel a lot of fluid'.
He was 6lb 10oz.

My cousin has gestational diabetes, and was told with her last baby they expected him to be 11lb+ and he was 9lb.

Scans are not always a good indicator of size.....as an ex MW I can tell you many tales of expected manoosive babies who fitted nicely into their "under 7lb" baby clothes.

However (with us midwives there is also a "however" Grin), your last baby was also a big one. Yes you are right, being flat on your back is not ideal for a large baby as the pelvis does not have the same range of movement. You'll be much better off standing up or kneeling up if you can stand it...this will allow your pelvis to move and also let gravity do its job too.

My DS was a 9lb 5oz heifer too Grin.... But never engaged and I ended up with a failed induction and Caesarean section.
