Quick survey about paternity leave

How much did your partner take, and was it
a) fully paid but not out of holiday allowance
b) Statutory pay (i.e. £100)
c) Holiday
d) Unpaid leave

I'll start....

ds - 3 1/2 days (2 full days, 3 half days), taken as holiday

dd - 5 days, taken as holiday

PG no. 3 - to be decided. Would be interested to know what other people did. Also, what sort of place your dp/dh works at (i.e. small business, self employed, large company, government etc.)

One weeks annual leave. He works for a small company.

We're really lucky. Dh works for Panasonic and he gets 2 weeks paternity pay at full pay rate. In addition to his 5 weeks annual leave. They did this when we had dd 3 1/2 years ago too, even though it was not usual for companies to offer paternity pay at that time.

2 weeks one out of holiday, one statutory. It was twins, so needed two weeks.

Prev exh took one week hol each time.

DD1 - he was a finishing off his PHd. so about 6 months...

DD2 - small company (around 50 employees in total), 2 weeks fully paid in addition to annual leave

Presuming the same for number 3.

It's a no brainer really. Why would men take paternity leave for pennies when they can take holiday at full pay?

dh took holiday because we could not afford for him to take £100pw statutory. Think he took more than was actually booked though, his employers not too bothered said to come back when ready but we'd had enough of each other

DH took two weeks leave on statutory pay. I was recovering from emergency c/s so needed him around for the full two weeks.

My dh got 2 weeks full pay, he works for a large utilities company.

Must add that was not out of annual holiday allowance.

Both times he took 2 weeks annual leave. Couldn't afford statutory paternity leave and he works in social care so they wouldn't cough up for full paid leave.

Thanks for replies so far - am really interested in who gets fully paid paternity leave, as like many on this thread we couldn't afford to take statutory leave, so is either holiday (of which dh gets precious little) or nothing.

I know places like the Civil Service will give you 2 weeks fully paid leave, so am really interested in other people's experiences!

2 weeks. Intended one to be AL and one to be PL but small business and so dozy they never sorted out/thought about PL so really extra week AL at full pay.

when ds2 was born, we had no income because I wasnt working, and had recently started a new job, so dx had to work. He took no time off at all, and I had to look after the eldest 2 children in the hospital the day after having the baby. Midwives were not best pleased, but we had no money, so no choice.

Dd1 annual leave - was supposed to be two weeks, but after 10 days dh's boss phoned and asked him to come back as they were so busy. I cried my eyes out.

dd2 - paternity leave on statutory pay

PG no. 3 - as dd2

uwila, I wouldn't say it's a no brainer really - if you can afford it then surely it's nice to have those extra two weeks this year to spend together as a family?
Provided you can afford it, obviously. It's going to be a tight month for us, but we'll be able to manage it (which I know makes us lucky).

2 weeks paid paternity leave plus 3 weeks holiday - boss was very good to let him have 5 weeks all together!

2 days paid
8 days annual leave (so he was off for 2 weeks total)

ahem, sorry about that...

dh got 2 wks fully paid patermity leave in addition to holiday entitlement.

Same here, dh has 2 weeks' fully paid paternity in addition to annual leave. He will take all.

DH took 3 weeks. 1 week was SPP, the rest hol as he had a week carried over...

DH took 3 days company leave on full pay, 1.5 days flexitime, 0.5 days holiday and then 2 weeks statutory paternity leave. 4 weeks later he took 6 weeks annual leave.

Sounds complicated??? but end result was 3 weeks when baba was born and then 6 weeks a month later.

Big company but only 3 days full pay

dd1 - dh had the day off that she was born - had no choice had come for an appt and dd1 ended up being born that morning by emergency c-section.

Dd1 was in SCBU and so dh would go into work very early and do a couple of hours and then come to the hospital by about 10ish.

He had time off when dd1 was having her cardiac surgery - but took it as annual leave. Although when we first got home - he'd would work less hours than usual - being the manager and able to work from home helped.

With dd2 - dh had no time off as he was due to start a new job the day I had dd2 by c-section and so he had no leave due. This time we were in Aus and he had not been working that long.

Planning to take 2 weeks - will only get statutory pay - company has 100ish employees. May take some annual leave too but being careful as we will lose half his wages when he goes part time to be a Daddy 2 days a week (we need me to go back f/t as I earn more) Shame I can't transfer some maternity pay to him.....
