What *weird* and *wonderful* self induction methods did you try??

RubyMummy · 25/02/2006 23:31

I shamefully admit I tried everything I possibly could when 11 days over trying to avoid induction. Drank balsamic vinegar (burns even worse on the way back up) Cumin tea (boiling water, cumin powder and raw potatoes)

BTW I DO NOT RECOMMEND THESE!! They didn;t work and were very nasty

Also tried Raspberry leaf, clary sage, pineapple, sex and curry

We think it was a chicken tikka masala that got things going eventually...

we tried clary sage.raspberry leaf tea, curry( we got free drinks and sweets in curry house!)sex, walking, pineaple. had a sweep at 10 days + in the end and that did the trick!

Flossam · 25/02/2006 23:38

Drank RLT from 36 weeks. Tried a pinneapple but it wasn't a good trick. inadvertantly tried the err, oral method. Waters broke about 36hrs after.... Didn't go overdue though so things weren't too desperate...

joanna4 · 25/02/2006 23:47

The most desperate was a ride on the childrens train at a fair you know the ones that bump over every piece of track. I had to squash myself in and shamefully people outside where taking bets that i would actually fit inside.

expatinscotland · 25/02/2006 23:55

Sex. Sex. And more sex.

Gave birth to dd1 at 38 weeks, 3 days and dd2 at 38 weeks, 6 days.

RubyMummy · 26/02/2006 09:49

Oh yes - lost count of the sweeps i was given (although I don't suppose that counts as self induction as required little help for that one!)

And reflexology too!

I tried many of the above plus very long walks in the nearby fields, which always seemed to alarm people who saw me and make them ask if I was ok (my bump was beyond huge). Sex was not a popular option as dp found it painful towards the end - maybe too much going on down there?? A sweep worked for me as well, after 10 days.

Thomcat · 26/02/2006 09:58

I tried clary sage - 20 drops in bath
raspberry leaf tea and the tablets
some other homeopathic thing that kinda does what r.leaf does.
lots of fresh pineapple
chillis, hot curries
sex
long walks
resting, not resting
a sweep

and then finally a whole bottle of castor oil and BINGO!

Greensleeves · 26/02/2006 09:59

I remember trying to "run" in the hospital grounds to try and get things going after being given prostaglandin... I's been in a wheelchair for nearly 6 months with SPD and was HUGE because of pre-eclampsia and polyhydramnios... my legs tried to run, but I couldn't get any uplift, so I looked EXACTLY like a big fat toad walking, then I collapsed in a heap after about 5 steps. DH was on the floor in stitches (rather than helping me back into my wheelchair, the git!)

Loobie · 26/02/2006 12:04

Castor oil all three times and all three times off i went!!!

RubyMummy · 26/02/2006 15:56

Anybody have any problems re the castor oil? Meconium in the waters or anything? I was too scared to try it (sespite doing numerous other silly things!)

ROFL Greensleeves!!

What worked for me when pg with ds1 was going to Sainsburys the day before his due date and buying an entire week's worth of shopping, including loads and loads of persihable stuff, fresh fruit, veg and the like.

My waters broke the next day and so I went into hospital and didn't re-emerge for 5 days as he did not come by himself so I had to be induced after a day, had a tough labour, forceps delivery, loads of stitches, loads of help needed to start breast-feeding etc. By that time, all my frsh food had gone off and had to be thrown away.

Would recommend anyone doing something that requires you to be there, eg book an appointment to have your hair done, and you can guarantee the baby will come and scupper your plans.

eve2005 · 26/02/2006 16:06

rasberry leaf tablets from 36 weeks and rubbing the big toes with clary sage oil in steamy shower. dd four days early! too afraid of the taste to try the tea

Lacrimosa · 26/02/2006 16:06

Sex did it for me, though we did have to do it lots, but I was always very up for it when I was pregnant(hormones I think) I tried a bouncy castle on my due date but it didnt work!

sweetkitty · 26/02/2006 16:40

clary sage
reflexology
raspberry leaf tablets from 34 weeks (ended up taking 3 bottles worth)
sex (oral and the normal route)
pineapple
curry
loads of fresh fruit
membrane sweep (never again)

DD2 arrived 12 days late none of the above worked

DD1 was 15 days early btw

hunkermunker · 26/02/2006 16:42

Clary sage
Pineapple

Curry (didn't work as I only fancied a korma!)

Shopping - I reckoned being in a public place if my waters broke would be very embarrassing and therefore was bound to happen, but alas it didn't.

DP didn't want to have sex from about 7 months onwards so I couldn't try that way, which probably accounts for all the cr*p I bought on shopping trips before ds was born! (that'll teach him!)

PeachyClair · 26/02/2006 17:29

Half a bottle of raspberry leaf capsules (), worked btw.

Rhubarb {worlked for my Mum, my nan and great Nan apparently but not me, though I confess not eating enough as only managed two bowls)

Curry / chilli

Pinapple- read you had to eat 3 whole (peeled tho I presume fresh ones and that's a no way)

Sex, obviously. May well have combined with raspberry leaf

Tried EVERYTHING
pineapples (ate about 3 whole fresh ones)
sex
walking
sweep
2 visits to local Indian restaurant for chicken madras

Nothing worked! I reckon if your baby doesn't want to come out, it'll take more than a bit of curry to persuade him...
