when did your waters break?

Just wondering really but my waters broke (rather spectacuarly Grin) when i was about 3cm dilated and from then on the contractions went into overdrive and wow did they hurt! I thought waters normally broke when you were well into established labour or they were broken for you in the second stage.

Oh, and why is it that your contractions hurt way way more when they've broken?

DS1 - (I was induced at 42+3) waters went not long before I started pushing. They went quite spectacularly!

DS2 - 1/2 way across the landing in the early hours of the morning on edd! I'd had no signs that labour was imminent so it was a lovely surprise after ds1 being so late!

Flisspaps · 03/03/2011 21:49

When the MW put a large crochet hook up my fanjo

emsyj · 03/03/2011 21:50

Mine broke a couple of hours before labour started. Same thing happened to my mum with both her births and my friend and her mum and sister all had the same experience too, so wonder if it might be a hereditary thing.... Hmm.

SarahScot · 03/03/2011 21:50

As DS made his entrance into the world. How I laugh when I think of the tidal wave that engulfed the battleaxe of a MW Grin

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/03/2011 21:50

DC1 same as Fliss, DC2 after she was born and completely soaked the poor MW.

KnitterNotTwitter · 03/03/2011 21:54

No idea... honestly... When I went to hospital they were adament that they hadn't gone but all of a sudden they could see DS's head... I think they went 36hrs before as I was up the allotment and thought I'd been a little bit incontinent.... No spectacular gushing for me... About 2ml of amniotic fluid and 10lb 6oz of baby in me :)

nailak · 03/03/2011 21:55

dc1 in before contractions dc2 gradually for a few days before labour dc3 just as i started pushing

moaningminniewhingesagain · 03/03/2011 21:57

DC1 - 2.5 days before active labour started, in a big gush after I bent down.

DC2 - just as I was getting on the table in theatre for my EMCS. I was gutted because my slippers had just been washedBlush

Particles · 03/03/2011 22:06

I don't know that mine did as people kept insisting they hadn't!

Had a gush the day previous which the midwife dismissed as "discharge".

Woke up at 4am and woke DH to tell him the bed was wet, he asserted that the bed was just cold and told me to go back to sleep Grin

Went to hospital for an examination and was asked if they had broken as there was no evidence to be found.

Proceeded to have ds without any apparent breaking of waters but everybody assured me they must have gone at some time previously.

Short answer: I don't know! Lost in a sea of back pain and vomit. Somebody must have come across a puddle on a floor somewhere...

bibbitybobbityhat · 03/03/2011 22:09

About 5 days before dd was born. Caused no end of complications, not least 5 days hospital stay for both of us and 14 days antibiotics for dd. Silly silly silly hospital (Kings, London SE5) should have listened to me when I said my waters were leaking Angry.

ShowOfHands · 03/03/2011 22:11

A couple of hours before labour started. So was excruciatingly painful throughout.

And it hurts more with no waters as er there's no bag of waters cushioning the contractions of the uterus.

emmylou157 · 03/03/2011 23:10

About an hour before contractions started all over my lovely new sofa!

NeedToSleepZZZ · 04/03/2011 07:50

some very Grin answers! oh, and thanks for the answer to my question about why it hurts more after i must have looked quite funny running to the bathroom whilst my waters were splashing on the floor... twice! i had a lot of it!

i asked my mum about hers and she had them broken by a mw who was wearing wellies, this made her a bit Shock

ds1 about 30 minutes after i woke up in pain!
ds2 mid wife broke them and i think i could of punched her lights out for that. no warning and boy did that hurt!

Eralc · 04/03/2011 08:56

Ds1 I had them broken once I got to 5cm (induction)

Ds2 they went about 2 seconds before he came out (for some reason I was convinced that he couldn't be anywhere near to being born because my waters hadn't gone - was a bit of a surprise when they went and then he came out so quickly, despite what the midwives were telling me - I blame the gas and air!)

Allegrogirl · 04/03/2011 09:48

DD1 waters went at 12.30 am at 40+2. I was induced with syntocin 4 days later.

DD2 waters went with slight mec staining at 2.00 am at 41+1. Induced by syntocin at 7.00 am and baby born at 11.00 am.

I seem to manage the waters breaking but no contractions follow. There won't be a third time lucky sadly.

B52s · 04/03/2011 09:53

Mine went at 9am one morning. Didn't have any other symptoms, went to hospital about 2pm, contactions started about 8pm, baby born 3am.

With DS2, while I was pushing. Ker-splash!

jbells · 04/03/2011 09:54

about 24 hours b4 contractions started, was 2am and a got up to go for a wee and got more than i bargained for i was 40+6

C4ro · 04/03/2011 10:11

I had a sweep at lunchtime which kicked off contractions somewhere between 4-6pm. At 8pm my waters went while I was sitting on the exercise ball trying to get comfortable and totally soaked my trousers. I found the contractions exceeding painful from then and when I got to hospital about 10pm and although I was only 1cm, they let me have an epidural straight away (well, by 11pm when Aneasthetist arrived). DD arrived 8.20am next morning. I didn't have contractions for long before the waters went and it is only now, a long time after, that I realise that might have made it so unbearably painful. The epidural wore off around transition time and contractions then, with the syntocin as well felt pretty much the same as it had at the start to me.

Squitten · 04/03/2011 10:12

DS1 - when I was about 4cms along

DS2 - when I was fully dialated and once the waters were gone, pushing started

NotSoPukeyMum · 04/03/2011 10:42

Not convinced that mine did - not that I was aware of anyway, although they must have gone at some point. I just had a brown/bloody discharge from the point labour started.

ShowOfHands · 04/03/2011 10:53

C4ro, I felt no difference in pain between the first contraction and the last one 2 days later. I think no waters meant they just started as they meant to go on.

weegiemum · 04/03/2011 10:58

Labout No1 - were broken for me at about 6cm as part of augmentation o labour

Labour No2 - went spontaneously - first sign of labour - ds was orn 10 hrs later

Labour No3 - didn't break but no offer to do so as (induced) labour was progerssing well. They went on the second last contraction, while the junior doc who had requested to observe the labour was having a wee look down there - right in her face, with an audible "pop". made me laugh!

spiderlight · 04/03/2011 11:00

At about 5cm, in a massive tidal wave all over my lovely midwife as she was examining me on my front room floor!
