when did your waters break?

Just wondering really but my waters broke (rather spectacuarly Grin) when i was about 3cm dilated and from then on the contractions went into overdrive and wow did they hurt! I thought waters normally broke when you were well into established labour or they were broken for you in the second stage.

Oh, and why is it that your contractions hurt way way more when they've broken?

Dd1 & Ds, had to have them broken for me, with Ds just as he was coming out.

With Dd2 24 hrs before contractions started, all over the living room floor in a big whoosh!

melodyangel · 04/03/2011 11:05

Both times the midwives haven't been able to break mine until baby was coming out. Like old boot leather apparently - nice.

dribbleface · 04/03/2011 12:39

after a 2 days of contractions, one almighty contraction, large pop, relief for about 5 minutes then wow massive contraction, by time i got to hospital was in a lot of pain, Ds born 4 hours later.

nappysrock · 04/03/2011 12:49

Mine seem to go in labour.

DS1 - broke when I was 5 cm - caused contractions to seriously kick up a gear - and I was fully dilated 1 hour later! 40 mins of pushing and he was born.

DD2 (only 1 week ago :))

  • waters went when 4cm, only 1 push about 35mins later & she was

I seem to have very fast labours - which only seem to speed up once waters have broke!

Both was a proper gush!

EgonSpengler · 04/03/2011 14:18

MW broke mine for me with a big blue crochet hook when I was 10cm. I didn't think anything else could add to the pain, but how wrong I was... Sad

DS - before labour got started, when I was in bed asleep. I was in hospital with PE and the miserable cow of a midwife refused to believe me as I hadn't heard a loud 'pop'. She claimed I had wet the bed. Cow. I never knew it made labour more painful - that will go some way to explaining the following hours of vomiting and writhing...

DD - at home, 10.30 at night, after a day of intermittent labour pains. It was a planned HB so I just let the midwifes know, had a nap then got up when labour got a bit more intense at about 2am.

With both my labours - waters went with a gush!

DS1 - waters broke when I was 5cm (I told the mw id wet myself... she reassured me it was just my waters!) - contractions then went mad - and 1 hr later i was 10cm!

DD2 - hind waters broke at 2cm, 15 mins later - forewaters went and I was reexamined - found to be 4cm! Contractions seriously knocked up a gear - and 35 mins later DD was born!

Yep - i seem to have fast labours, which only speed up when my waters break.

Hubby says Id better camp out at the hospital if we have a third coz I might not make it in time!

7:15pm Monday 6th Nov 2000 (!) dd was born on the 9th. There was an audible pop & a massive gush because she wasn't engaged & I lost pretty much all the fluid in one go (I didn't leak afterwards & the scan showed no fluid). I had a huge panic about cord prolapse because it was such a shock, I was only 36+ weeks. I had a long & very painful OP labour with contractions starting the next day.

My next two were c-sections.

DD1 In Church, when I stood up for the hymn. Gushed everywhere (how embarrassing, 5 days early). Labour started 12 hours later.

DD2 in A and E where I was procuring some medication for my DH. That got everyone's attention very nicely...I recommend it if you are in a long queue. Again, made quite a splash. Contractions started about 10 minutes later.

ChasingSquirrels · 04/03/2011 20:04

With both DC's, waters breaking was the prelude to labour.
With dc1 contractions started 30 mins later
With dc2 about 15 mins later.
Both were a gush followed by a constant trickle.

bigredtractor · 04/03/2011 20:06

4 hours into labour - in the car on the way to the hospital as we took a bend...

Only the fore waters though - hind waters shot our newborn DS right to the other end of the bed as he popped out!!

mousymouse · 04/03/2011 20:07

dc1: waters broke at 37 weeks, 3am on my nightly waddle to the loo, no contractions, induced a day later
dc2: waters broke at 41 weeks, again 3am on my waddle to the loo, contractions started 3 hours later, dd born a few hours later.

Narketta · 04/03/2011 20:07

First labour I had my waters broken at 5cm dilated.

Second labour waters broke with final push and DD was born in her sac.

GwennieF · 04/03/2011 20:14

DS - at the start of induction after two pessaries. DS was born rougly 24 hours later by EMCS

DD - right at the end as she came out. I felt her head through the bag - felt very strange - dry and leathery. At least that's how I remember it!

redandyellowandpinkandgreen · 04/03/2011 20:15

Mine were broken by the midwife, not sure how far dilated I was, about 4cm I think? They were trying to hurry things along.

GibberingGinger · 04/03/2011 21:59

DD1, waters broken by midwife whilst the other midwife stuck a canular in and started the synotocin.

DTs, in the middle of the night when I got up for a pee. HUGE gush all over the floor. Had to use a bath towel between my legs to get to hospital. Stupid midwife in reception was like "did you not have any maternity towels?" Hmm . Not any that held 5 litres (or so it seemed)

My only advice is do not be worried if your waters are scarlet. I was really panicing as everything I read said waters would be straw coloured or maybe tinged with a bit of show so I assumed this meant some mucusy type strands in it, but mine was scarlet, exactly the same as if I'd bled litres of watery blood. Really freaked me out Grin funny now but not at the time
