Stitches down below - To look or not to look!?

I had my baby in May but required restitching in August, 11 weeks ago. Been told all healed fine and have a "beautiful perineum" Hmm but just can't bring myself to get a mirror out! I havent looked at all since having baby. I was never exactly fine-tuned with my bits even before pregnancy but part of me is really curious! Will I regret it?!

I was ready to say never look, but after 11 weeks it should be fine

sarahscot · 06/11/2010 15:57

I was going to say don't look too - I did after a couple of weeks and was horrified at the massacre that had gone on down there!

However, after 11 weeks it should be pretty much healed.

Be brave and go for it.

I never looked before I had a baby, so have been happy to trust my doctors judgement. 11 months on I'm still too scared to look!

RiojaLover75 · 06/11/2010 16:09

Hell woman! It's your Fanjo!!!

Look at it for goodness sake, it'll be well healed after 11 weeks and I speak from experience Shock.

FrameyMcFrame · 06/11/2010 16:33

I wouldn't bother, if it's giving you no problems now and the docs say it's fine then what's to see?

ethelina · 06/11/2010 16:33

You have to look! Its much less scarey than it seems. I had stitches which came out too early and been redone and I looked before and after. It's all quite neat and tidy and I'm glad I could recognise it in a lineup Grin

sh77 · 06/11/2010 16:41

Yes, looking after 11 weeks shouldn't be too scary. Stitches should have healed and bruising and tenderness gone down. I would have said NO before 4 weeks.

cardamomginger · 06/11/2010 18:08

have a stiff drink and go for it!

ipredicttrouble · 06/11/2010 22:22

I looked at about 6 weeks post labour and all was fine. Just a small and very neat scar where I had been cut. Hardly noticeable thought TBH.

IsItNapTimeYet · 07/11/2010 11:44

I looked as soon as I got home!

Mostly I kept checking to make sure there was no infection starting.

DurhamDurham · 07/11/2010 11:50

I didn't look until about 6 weeks later, still didn't look great (but then did it ever look great?)

My dh watched the mid-wife stitch me and helpfully told me that it looked like "a devastation area" down there. He did look at me with new respect after my bravery (he doesn't need to know I was too exhausted and numb to feel anything)

clarabellarocks · 09/11/2010 08:40

I looked after a week and wished to god I hadn't - it was carnage!!

ihavenewsockson · 09/11/2010 08:54

i looked at 2 and completely freaked out- eveything was still so swollen, I thought they'd sewed everything together.

11 weeks should be fine, don't panic.

first1 · 09/11/2010 18:10

Gp checked again for me today that all is healed but I still can't bring myself to it! Maybe next year...

I've never looked. DD1 is nearly 4...

hillyhilly · 09/11/2010 18:16

I've been stitched twice, the last time was over 3 years ago and it has actually never occurred to me to look!!

LoveBeingAMummy · 09/11/2010 18:16

I looked after asking the mw how thingscwere looking and she told me to get a mirror. Tbh it wasn't the stiches that bothered me.... It was the rest of it (shudder)

AmeliaEarhart · 09/11/2010 18:21

I had an episiotomy last week and I've been wondering whether to have a look. Despite being reassured by the midwife this morning that it's healing nicely I'll take the advice given here and steer clear.

The epidural had worn off by the time the doctor was sewing me up but she refused to wait for the local anaesthetic to kick-in so I felt every bloody stitch!

Hopalongcassidy · 09/11/2010 18:22

I looked...but wasn't exactly sure what it had looked like before. Bit of an anticlimax.

Marjee · 09/11/2010 20:09

I've never looked, was tempted to a few times but always wimped out, ds is 1yo now! Should I be concerned that the midwives didn't check either?

gegs73 · 09/11/2010 20:14

I didn't look after DS2. I did after DS1 and rather wished I hadn't.

KatyS36 · 09/11/2010 21:38

I looked after about 10 days (2nd degree tear).

It was nowhere near as bad as I had expected :)

nattiecake · 10/11/2010 16:44

The midwives never checked me either Marjee, I gave birth 5 weeks ago. I've looked a few times but couldnt even see the scar. My husband had a look 1 week after birth and said my fanjo looked normal, but pointed out that I had piles that I hadnt even noticed!! Lol!!

luceeloo · 18/11/2010 18:22

Never ever intend to!

first1 · 22/11/2010 10:01

I've done it! Stupidly, I feel proud like it's some huge irrational achievement Smile. Tbh, I'm delighted to say I couldnt even see a scar or anything it looks normal but ,it's literally a jungle down there! Soooo need a wax, please someone tell me I can soon? Not over where the stitches are (though can't seem them) but at least the bulk of it Blush. It's been 13.5 weeks since restitch. Advice please!
