Does late baby = big baby?

WorrisomeHeart · 21/10/2010 10:33

Probably a daft question, as obviously being late gives them longer to grow, but just wondered if anyone had an overdue baby that was a 'normal' weight as opposed to a 10lber?

Am 41+2, being induced on Sunday and wondering if I should be packing the larger baby clothes...

Had a friend who had to be induced, think her DS was born at about 41+5 in the end... he was under 6lb!! So not always.

TigerFeet · 21/10/2010 10:38

not necessarily

dd2 t+9 and a nicely average 7lb 5

DaisySteiner · 21/10/2010 10:38

Yes, lots of people are 'late' but have average sized babies.

I've had several big, late babies (8lb 9oz, 2 x 9lb 12oz and 10lb 13oz) and they only one who was slightly squished in normal sized baby clothes was the biggest one. So in my experience, even big babies will fit in newborn clothes.

OooeeeoooeeeoooeeEthel · 21/10/2010 10:39

DS was 41+2 and 7lb 6

Hazeyjane · 21/10/2010 10:40

I was 2 weeks over with dd1 and 2 and they were both around 7lbs.

Ds was a week early and was the biggest at 8lb 0oz.

I don't think it has much to do with size, you might just be someone who 'cooks' babies longer!

WorrisomeHeart · 21/10/2010 10:40

Brilliant, thanks guys. The NB clothes I have packed go up to 10lb, so I had thought they would be ok, might take a couple of the 0-3 that go up to 12lb just in case, but will strike that off my 'to worry about' list.. Grin

I wouldn't say so necessarily. All mine we late and all were relatively big but I'm not convinced it was because they were late.

DD1 was 6 days late and weighed 8lb 9
DD2 was 6 days late and weighed 8lb 13
DD3 was 4 days late and weighed 9lb 11

I found even with the size of DD3 she still needed newborn and sometimes even small baby bits - I find the sizes really big on baby vests/sleepsuits etc

bumpybecky · 21/10/2010 10:45

dd1 40+11 was 8lb 1
dd2 40+8 was 7lb 8
dd3 40+3 was 8lb 3
ds 40+10 was 7lb 10 (or maybe 7lb 12 I forget!)

and I'm 6ft tall and not very thing(!) so hardly a tiny thing :)

bumpybecky · 21/10/2010 10:45

thin! I'm not very thin [hgrin]

DomesticG0ddess · 21/10/2010 10:54

I think they might be a bit bigger than they would have been, but depends on their size all the way through. DS was 40+11 and was 9lb, but scans showed him to be at the higher end of the charts all the way through. This one is also towards the higher end of the scale and I am 40 weeks tomorrow. I expect I'll go over, and I don't expect him to be small.

Hazeyjane · 21/10/2010 11:01

oops that should be 8lb 9oz

He wore newborn size too.

TotorosOcarina · 21/10/2010 11:06

My 2nd 2 babes were born at 40 weeks and were 7lbs11 and 8lbs4

my son was 2 weeks late and was 9lbs.

PfftTheMildySpookyDragon · 21/10/2010 11:15

Mine were bothe delivered at 41+2 and one was 7lb 14oz, and the other 7lb 3oz.

So no.

beckie90 · 21/10/2010 14:24

ds was 2 week late and was 6ib 11oz, but was still so tiny, he was in early baby clothes

DD was born at 42 + 5, 7lbs 11oz. We took 0-3mth sleepsuit and her legs only came down to the knees! And 0-3mth snowsuit was so enormous we had to buy a smaller one.

Don't know why I listened to the people who said newborn size clothes were a waste of time/money.

I think late just = not ready to come out yet, rather than = big.

40+15 and 7lb 5oz - she was skinny, but not that small if that makes sense.

LynLiesNomoreZombieFest · 21/10/2010 19:58

I believe they gain about 1OZ a day in the last few weeks.

So not a huge amount.

Dozeyland · 22/10/2010 10:05

Ladyradiator - interesting how they weighed the same :)

Ladywellian - I like this phrase better!

I think late just = not ready to come out yet, rather than = big.

Been thinking the same thoughts OP I am 40weeks today

SparkyUK · 23/10/2010 22:51

My first was 43 weeks and was 7 lbs 14 oz. The scan I had at 42 week implied he was going to be over 9 lbs but they were trying to scare me into inducing (which I ended up doing in the end...)

I'm 41 weeks today with DS2 so fingers crossed another average size (healthy) bebe is in store...

Newborn clothes never fitted DD who was 7lb 5oz and the legs are too short in 0-3months at 6 weeks - maybe length is more important than weight.

mamadiva · 24/10/2010 10:25

My DS was 40+6 and he was only 6lb 15oz but he was quite long, even at that though we needed early baby clothes for him, despite the fact the midwives said I was having a 10 pounder Hmm

Isis1981uk · 04/04/2015 10:29

I gave birth to my son at 39+4 and he was 6lb 8.5oz, & my daughter at 40+4 and she was 6lb 6oz....I don't think it's a sure thing late babies are bigger, especially if the dates are a little off.
