A mears teaser for you - what happened next?

Remember I did a teaser for you about a feeding problem a few months ago?

Here is a childbirth story for you and see if you can guess what happened next. I will be back with the answer later. Real life story...

A midwife colleague asked me to look after her in labour. Her first baby was an elective C/S for placenta praevia during which she haemorrhaged badly and needed a blood transfusion.

What she hoped for was a waterbirth and a 6 hour discharge back home.

She called me last night thinking that she might be in labour and she wanted to be examined before she went into the hospital. Her contractions were irregulaer 2-3 every 10 mins and she felt quite short lasting. She had had a show and was using a TENS machine. She was nervous about labour and was not sure she would be able to cope when the contractions got stronger.

She was also bouncing on a gym ball when she got a contraction but was coping really well.

She was delighted to hear she was 6cm dilated and off we went to hospital....

What do you think happened next...

Well, as I said, she was 6cm dilated at 00.20am. Coping really well. Looked very together - hardly batting an eye. Jumped into the car with ease and off we went.

Plan was to get to hospita, put in a cannula because she was previous C/s, crossmatch blood and do a quick CTG if possible before going in pool. I had phoned ahead and asked for pool to be filled.

We had been travellingfor about 10 mins when the indicator of the car went on, then off. Car slowed, sped up and slowed again. Then indicator went on again and we pulled into the layby.

Her waters had broken at 12.45 and she felt she wanted to push

She got out the front seat and we put an old sheet on the back seat. Had to jank out her toddler seat to make room for us both.

Called 999 for ambulanace as all this was going on.

Beautiful baby boy slid out at 01.00am.wrapped in his cord. Quickly unravelled him and he cried immediately.

We got to hospital at 01.30. Baby breastfed throughout journey, still attached by cod to mum. Placenta delivered physiologically at 01.51.
Small tear stitched.

Mum absolutely delighted - midwife in total shock
