Postnatal confinement nanny

I know this is quite specific to the asian/chinese culture, but are there any mumsnetters out there who've used one? What are your experiences? We live in outer London near Stansted. Neither our parents are in the country for various reasons, but my mum's nagged me to look into having one. Any recommendations/suggestions/thoughts? I'm due in 10 days!

A maternity nurse would probably be what you want here. Agencies include Eden and Maternally Yours

SelinaDoula · 27/08/2010 11:06

Or you could consider a Postnatal doula.

i haven't had one but i have a cleaner, i send my ironing away to be done, and i have friends and family help out with cooking. i've been very ill so these have all been necessities. i guess i post natal doula would do all these things in one person! and probably also help with specific baby stuff too. it just seemed like a more expensive option to me. all the best with the baby!

oldmum42 · 01/09/2010 17:21

I'm going for the cheap/easy option, mum is coming to stay for a week/ten days.... she did this with my previs dc's, and it was great (mum is one of those really useful people who actually helps out rather than hinders when she visits!), she will keep the house and older DC's in order, help with the cooking and let me focus on the new baby. If she wasn't available, I'd shell out for an agency cleaner a couple od times a week for maybe a month - it would be well worth it IMO, to give me a bit of settling in time.

anonMum2 · 04/09/2010 09:51

ShellyTee, have you managed to find one? I also live near stansted.

I'm looking for someone who can come a few hours per day to help out, and also provide me with the 'special confinement food' for roughly a month. Most food delivery companies here don't follow the asian/chinese post-birth diet so I'm at lost as to where to go too.

Good luck with the birth, if you haven't had your baby already! :)

northlondonchoclover · 18/09/2010 14:13

Hi Shelly and anonmum2,
What did you end up doing in the end? My mum will be staying for a month to help cook the confinement foods. Good luck with the births

BagofHolly · 19/09/2010 01:28

What are confinement foods? I'm intrigued!

anonMum2 · 21/09/2010 20:24

northlondonchoclover-that sounds great. Lucky you! I've still not sorted mine out yet. Looks like I'll be on pizzas if DH cooks.

Confinement foods that I know are full ginger, tumeric, herbs, chicken soup etc. depending on culture. A lot of women my family and I know who strictly follow the confinement diet/rest finish off far healthier (and some really beautiful because of all the nutritious food) than before they were even pregnant. Sadly, I won't be one of these lucky people as I'm here in this country on my own.

i know someone, my mum is a confinement lady from Malaysia

Shopping2 · 20/09/2019 13:18

ops sorry too late, usually you need to book them far months before. All the best in your new season

Teddybear45 · 23/09/2019 00:19

Is there a big Chinese supermarket / cash and carry near you who you can ask for the food? Alternatively try asking them for contacts.

Alternatively Indian, Middle Eastern, and Nepalese supermarkets / sweetmarts / cash and carries often have the special confinement foods given to mums and many will even deliver them to you for free if you ask. It wouldn’t be the same type of food but still does the job in terms of weight loss / helping with breastfeeding / correcting deficiencies etc.

chlo114 · 10/08/2020 10:02

@Shopping2 is your mum still working as confinement lady? I'm originally from Malaysia, now living in London and looking for one.

Wimbledoncovidmum · 28/08/2020 19:03

@chlo114 @Shopping2
What was the outcome of this? I’m trying to sort out post natal confinement foods. Tried to ship over pre packaged daily herb packets from Singapore and Malaysia but because of covid, there are restrictions on food entering the country, especially any from China initially. The company said they couldn’t guarantee it would pass customs.!

Are they any options in London? I had a look at Healthy Mummies who do daily delivery of post confinement food but I’m not sure how authentic it is

Shopping2 · 28/08/2020 19:53

Hi I don't know any option from here.My mum whom is a confinement lady helps me with 3 of mine and also worked for one of my friend here near se2.Currently Malaysians are not allowed to leave the country unless they have a valid work or student permit. If you email me I will give you some tips.I know how to cook myself

Wimbledoncovidmum · 28/08/2020 20:58

@Shopping2 Hi there, just saw this post while I'm searching for Malaysian confinement lady. My due date will be in August.
May I know if your mum still working as a confinement lady or do you know anyone else?

keehong · 31/01/2021 17:00

@Scorpio78 Hi there! Thanks for providing the contact. Do you know if anyone has hired her before? Is she good?
