Hi mners. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post.

My cousins baby has been born early despite trying to halt labour she's been born at 23 weeks. She is breathing unaided and has a strong heartbeat. She is 15oz.

I know of babies born this early and surviving but with major disability. (Im an sn lsa)

Any mners have experience of extreme premmies they can share and how we as a family (we are a large family aunts/uncles/cousins etc) can support my cousin and his girlfriend at this time.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I followed at the time and now have a friend who may be about to go through something similar. How is the little one doing Mumbar?

planner26 · 15/10/2010 18:30

bump - got my fingers crossed for the little one too Mumbar x

Been thinking of this one too. Smerch- your friend might want to look at the Bliss website (bliss.org.uk) and the forums there, she will get lots of support from other mums of early babies.

My DS was 27 weeks, 1lb 4oz, and ventilated for six weeks. You would never know what he went through now.

Friend's baby born at 23 weeks and is just starting nursery school - a few physical challenges but okay. Mum pumped milk while babe was in NICU and she needed freezer space for storage so that is something practical you can offer.

Smerch · 24/10/2010 11:03

Wow that's amazing Mumbar. Glad she got over her infection. Did she breathe by herself from birth? My friend had a scare just before 24 weeks but is still hanging in there at just over 26 and she was terrified by the chat the doctors had with her when she was in hospital. They prepared her for weeks, possibly months of breathing support and even at 26 weeks most babies seem to need lots of help. Your cousin's baby must be one tough cookie. All the best to you all. Please keep us updated. I can't wait to hear she's made it home :)

mumbar · 23/02/2011 23:19

UPdate: LO doing well. Was on and off ventilator for a bit as minor heart prob and needed help with breathing to give her a rest. Came home 2 days after her due date. Had some oxygen but came off it a few weeks ago. All seems fine. Now 6.9lb, on solids and rolling!!

Very funny to watch a smaller than average newborn sized baby behaving like a 6 month old should. Grin

I've almost cried when reading this and now have goosebumps (but am very hormonal, crazy pregnant woman! Grin). What a fabulous story and thank you so much for the update - would have hated to continue to read and not found out how this little dote is. Brilliant news. I wish her and her family all the very best.
