Dacia Duster or Nissan Qashqai?

Looking for a new family car and would appreciate your thoughts. 😊
We'd like an SUV with a large boot. It would mostly be for small daily trips and occasional longer ones. These are the 2 we're looking at. I'd be grateful for any feedback from those of you who have/had either of these cars. Thank you. 😊

I don’t have experience of either sorry (I have a Q3 and highly recommend it!) but I did just want to share that my dad calls the QashQai a ‘Squishy’ because he can’t wrap his head around the proper pronunciation. And I think it’s very cute and it doesn’t usually come up in conversation so this was my first chance to share with anyone since he mentioned it at Christmas. I mean obviously, even with no knowledge I would vote for the Squishy! Sorry if you now can’t call it anything else…

We had a Hyundai Tuscan and absolutely loved it…..maybe just test drive one….humour me 🤗x

Didntask · 16/01/2026 20:02

Both have poxy cabin/boot space. Unless you're willing/able to upsize to an XC90/Disco etc, I'd look at estate cars like the Skoda Superb. Although the Skoda Kodiaq is quite capacious if you want an SUV ?

ScoobyG · 16/01/2026 20:02

Skoda Karoq, or Kodiaq if you need more seats/boot space.

ExperiencedTeacher · 16/01/2026 20:05

Absolutely loved our Qashqai

Ohpleeeease · 16/01/2026 20:09

We live near a big Nissan dealership so quite a lot of people locally have Qashquais. They all seem to have problems!

A friend had the Dacia Duster and drove it a lot without issue, so purely on anecdotal evidence that would be my choice.

MamaBobo · 16/01/2026 20:09

We test drove a Duster and hated it. It was like a tardis in reverse, it looked way bigger on the outside than it was inside. The cabin was really cramped. The one we drove wasn’t the latest version though. A friend has a Qashqai and it felt far nicer inside, way more room in the cabin.

Blarn · 16/01/2026 20:10

Our duster is about 6 years old now and just drives. It's basic but comfortable and we've never struggled with the boot space as its quite boxy so stuff just fits in it.

hereismydog · 16/01/2026 20:12

I have a Qashqai and I cannot wait to get rid of the bloody thing! It eats petrol like there’s no tomorrow; I put £30 in on Tuesday and the dash said 160 miles to empty. I’ve driven about 30 real miles and the dash now says it has 41 miles left. Absolute piece of shit 😂

TheFatCatSatOnTheMat · 16/01/2026 20:16

I love my Duster. It’s not flashy but it is amazing value and very spacious. Plus if anything goes wrong parts are very cheap to replace. This is my first Duster and when it’s time to replace it I’ll be getting another one.

Unicorn34 · 16/01/2026 20:18

My daughter loves her Qashqui - very roomy and comfortable. She feels very safe in it with her children too.

Kalimeras · 16/01/2026 20:21

I test drove a qashqai and ended up with a Skoda karoq which I love. Smoother to drive, lots of handy little features, and an immense boot

Kneeslikethese · 16/01/2026 20:30

We have a Duster. I like it, decent size boot, enough space for us. It's more of a budget car than the quashqui I think but it does the job, is comfortable enough and seems OK on fuel consumption.

RollOnSunshine · 16/01/2026 20:31

Both of them have crap boot space. To get a good boot in an SUV you normally need something mahoosive.

you are better off getting an estate.

AnIncandescentGlow · 16/01/2026 20:54

Oh wow such mixed reviews! I appreciate your responses.
Interesting for both cars that some say boot space isnt good and others say it is. We'd use it mainly for the pushchair and any shopping. Occasional holidays too, so we need space for suitcases.
Unfortunately the Karoq is out of our price range, or that would have been an option.
It's such a huge purchase for us, one we really want to get right. It's tough making a decision though. 😣

Watching with interest as looking for similar.

Emas82 · 16/01/2026 21:03

I've had 2 dusters, both were brilliant, so cheap to run and maintain. My last one I had 7 years and the only things I replaced where back brakes and a couple of tires. If price is an issue, definitely go for a duster.
I've got a ford puma now as I wanted something a bit fancier. It's a bloody princess! Lovely to drive and everything but has already had way more money poured in to it over 2.5 years than both my dusters combined.
I might get another duster for my next car.
Try and go for a higher end model though, as the basic ones are really basic.

AnIncandescentGlow · 16/01/2026 21:05

@Emas82 Thank you, that's helpful! We're looking at either a Comfort or Prestige as I've seen they're better than the Essential. Did you have either of those?

Mg ZS, loads of space, cheap and 7 year warranty

ReturnToRiding · 16/01/2026 21:07

qashqai boots are surprisingly small.
duster ok but I felt like I was driving a bus. The mg zs is a great all round spacious family car.

TiredMummma · 16/01/2026 21:08

Nissan Qashqais are reliable cars. Avoid the Darcia they aren’t. Other option is a Mazda CX5?

And the good thing is you'll be able to get a higher model (with gadgets and stuff) probably for cheaper than a more basic model of the qashqai.
We got a super king size mattress in the back of ours (folded) to take to the dump, so plenty of space!
We had a prestige I think, hard to keep track as they change the names! Basically whatever was the top model in 2016.

Purplecatshopaholic · 16/01/2026 21:10

I’m not a fan of the Duster myself, it’s seriously basic. However since you ask, I have two friends who have Dusters and both love them. One had a Qashqai first, and changed to the Duster.

chillichoclove · 16/01/2026 21:15

We have had a duster comfort for 7 years and no problems including holidays camping in France with plenty of room.

Thank you for the recommendation! I had a look and they look great, but apparently boot size is smaller than a Qashqai.
