Dacia Duster or Nissan Qashqai?

Looking for a new family car and would appreciate your thoughts. 😊
We'd like an SUV with a large boot. It would mostly be for small daily trips and occasional longer ones. These are the 2 we're looking at. I'd be grateful for any feedback from those of you who have/had either of these cars. Thank you. 😊

I wanted to set my qashqai on fire ( I didn't and wouldn't obviously, but I did really hate it).

It was an absolute money pit! So many better cars for the same or even less money, and once I actually looked into it (after my car broke down several times and I spent ££££) i found out it wasn't just a bad fluke of my actual car but the whole Qashqai line as a whole had several problems.

Your boot handle will fall off, and you will then drive round and notice how many other Qashqais have their boot handles gorilla taped back on!

If you go down a year or two in reg, you should be able to get a Karoq for similar money.

I’m not a fan of the Duster myself, it’s seriously basic. However since you ask, I have two friends who have Dusters and both love them. One had a Qashqai first, and changed to the Duster.

That's interesting, thank you. Do you know if they changed due to not liking something with the Qashqai?

@Dontpokethebearnow Oh interesting, I'm going to be looking at all the boot handles now! 🙈

We have a Nissan epower and are very happy with it. We get over 50 miles per gallon and it is a very smooth drive. We are also supporting the lovely workers in the factory in Sunderland!

divisifting · 16/01/2026 21:21

another one who hated my qashqai and just had problems with it!

liveforsummer · 16/01/2026 21:24

We have by coincidence ended up a Dacia family. I have a Sandero but my brother has a duster and reports the same - amazing mpg, cheap parts when you do need them which is rare. Basic means less to go wrong. So far the only thing on my 2019 model I’ve had to replace is the tyres. Same story for the others on my family who all have ended up with them. Not going to win any style, tech or luxury awards though

Op, my friend loved the Qashqai and had two before she changed, but shifted for financial reasons - the Duster is cheaper I believe.

Are you looking at new or used? If you want boot space look at the Bigster - it’s the bigger version of the Duster and it’s not much more money. They’re surprisingly unbasic nowadays.

Used. Just checked and the Bigster is a lot more expensive than the Duster. Looks good, but sadly out of our price range.

We have had a duster comfort for 7 years and no problems including holidays camping in France with plenty of room.

Interestingly just chatting to my husband , who loves the duster and he says the boot is smaller than the qashquai. For what it’s worth!

Ah no worries. They only came out this year so not many (if any) on the used market I wouldn’t think.

We’ve just replaced a Qashqai with one and love it so much more.

The build is very very similar to the new Dusters though, which I think came out a year or so before.

leafinthewind · 16/01/2026 21:43

Love my Duster. It's a 2024 model. Easy to drive and park. I stuff it full of Scout gear

Clementine12 · 16/01/2026 21:48

I looked at and researched both last summer. Ended up getting a VW T Roc instead and love it. More reliable. Nicer styling. Same price on the deal I got at the dealership.

The issue we found with the qashqai boot is that the tailgate is very slanted so the usable space feels so much less than cars with a more vertical tailgate. It always felt a struggle to fit in taller suitcases and boxes unless they were pushed right back by the seats, which limits things if you have a few items. Boxier models seem easier to fit stuff in. It’s not just about the quoted volumes.

ItsSlipperyWhenWet · 16/01/2026 21:52

The new hybrid duster is incredible, comes with heated seats, camera, parking sensors, apple play, sat nav, heated front and rear windscreen, heated steering wheel, a kit to turn the back seats into a bed base and go camping. It does 600 ish miles on a full tank. I love it

Temporaryname158 · 16/01/2026 21:59

Boot size is always in perspective to what car you had before. I have recently got a Duster and absolutely love it.

easy to drive and park despite its size. Spacious for me and 2 children plus endless amount of stuff we keep in the boot. Gym bags, sports equiptment, recently sledges, scooters! We also camp and it’s fitted all our camping equipment comfortably.

I bought it as I needed a large boot space and car but didn’t have a large budget. I’m really pleased with it

ItsPronouncedThroatwobblerMangrove · 16/01/2026 22:00

I never understand this desire for an SUV over a regular estate car if you’re looking for boot space. They’re higher up, so you have further to hoist luggage etc, and generally much smaller, with sloping sides and often have a high floor pan, further reducing the space available. Plus you should still have enough room to get kids out of either side when you’re parked. Practicality over a fad!

Mintearo7 · 16/01/2026 22:00

Endless problems with our Qashqai here also. Boot was decent for our family of four though.

winterbluess · 16/01/2026 22:04

We had a qashqai a while back and really liked it, no problems with it at all it was just time to get something newer

Seeline · 16/01/2026 22:23

Hated my qashqai. It had all sorts of problems, but the lack of useable boot space was really annoying. Struggled to get decent sized suitcases in for example. Also the space in the rear passenger seats was poor. As my kids grew into teens they struggled for leg space. I couldn't wait to get rid.
I now have a Seat Atica which although slightly smaller than the qq, you can get far more in the boot, and my now adult children are comfortable in the back.

littlejo67 · 16/01/2026 22:29

We are on our third Duster. We get a new once every 3yrs. Going to keep this one though.
We have the top of the range one. Lovely reliable good value car. Would always recommend.

LilaRose25 · 16/01/2026 22:55

I have a Qashqai, it fits 2 car seats in the back but pretty much writes the middle seat off so just be aware of that. Boot space is fine for the pram plus all the other bits and bobs that come with babies/toddlers!

Wbeezer · 16/01/2026 23:19

I prefer estate cars to SUVs because of the extra boot space, I have a hybrid Dacia Jogger, very happy with it, especially the mileage and loads of room.
i think the new Dacia duster looks a bit bigger and much nicer than the old one

EponymousEponine · 16/01/2026 23:33

I can recommend Nissan XTrail which is basically a bigger version of the Qashqai. We've had ours just over 5 years, bought it used at 4 years old and its done us so well and still going strong at over 100k miles and now towing our caravan! We got it cause we needed a 7 seater which still had a decent boot - if you don't need 7 seats the boot is enormous. Its also really good on fuel.

Alternatively look at the MG5 if you'd consider an electric car - we love ours (3.5 years in!) and the boot is massive. Much cheaper to run than a non electric car too

Namechangedforthis25 · 16/01/2026 23:50

We have had a qashqai for ten years. I don’t want to sell it or upgrade

never had any issues with it

able to take loads of stuff - pram, shopping, stuff for kids, camping stuff - never had a problem with boot

feels spacious but is easy to drive and park

love it
