Can anyone help me please. Ds is 3 in a few weeks, his eyes are level with car seat and he is 17.3 kg. I have looked at high back boosters and have also looked at you tube and the impact on a three yr olds organs in the event of an accident only restrained with a seat belt in a high back booster at this age. On the other hand I looked at the recaro young sport where you can use a five point harness until they a four (Please correct me if my info is wrong) but the recaro doesn't do well on the which? Report

I have now gone round in circles and totally confused myself.....can anyone please help advise me which seat is the best one to put him in next

Tia x

I'm not sure what to suggest, but some seats are convertible between groups 1 and 2 and this might suit you better. Also, different seats can vary in size quite a bit, even if they're the same group. It might be worth going to a shop and trying a few out.

craftynclothy · 29/01/2011 13:06

I don't know if this helps you make a decision but when I was looking at when to switch from a 5 point harness to a seatbelt, most people said that the 5 point harnesses are only tested to 18kg.

enimod · 29/01/2011 13:31

my son was 4 in july-we had bought him the maxi rodi but he was too small for it-too fidgity moving around etc-we put him back in the maxi cosi priori- he was 17kg in july. anyway-in september we tried him again in the rodi and althouugh he hadnt grown in size or muchh weight was then 17.5 he seemed older to sit in the seat without a 5 point harness. in september we had a frontal 2 impact collision and he was FINE-no whiplash..nothhing. he was 4.2 years old. i do thhinkk if he had beenn in this seat any earlier he woould not have been safe ennouughh. he didnt mind staying in thhe 5 point harness until he was 4-it hasnt affected him.
have a look at thhe infoo look at the weight limit maybe write to customer services maxii cosi-i certaiinly dont thhink my son was old enughh too go in the non 5 point harness-he seemed too flimsy annd not supported enough.

i recommend the britax two way elite. its rearfacing stage 1 but can also be used forward facing and will keep LO harnessed until 25kg.It also has a very tall shell so great for taller toddlers.

we moved ds to the maxi cosi rodi xr around that age as he was over 18kgs and too heavy for the harness on his maxi cosi priori xp. He has been fine with it and has never tried to undo his belt when he wasnt supposed to. I think the seat linked above only uses the impact cushion up to 18kgs too and then it is the adult seatbelt that has to be used.

Iggi2011 · 30/01/2011 21:02

It seems hard to put LO in a seat that says from 4 when they are smaller - I'm about to do the same thing with my 3.6 year old. He's 18kg, and Britax says safe until his eyeline is level with the seat - which I'd say is a month or so away, but the Britax seat was in a minor accident so out it must go.
The maxi cosi airprotect looks more solid than some of the other seats - will see if it fits.

NancyDrewHasaClue · 30/01/2011 21:06

I can really recommend this

DD was in it from 3.5 and DS from 2.4 using the five point harness.

Seona1973 · 30/01/2011 21:31

the harness on that one only does up to 18kgs again so would have to be used with the normal seatbelt after that.

Northernlurker · 30/01/2011 21:35

I hope you find something. It is difficult. We've moved dd3 out of her Britax 5 point today (gave it to her cousin!) and in to dd2's Britax high back booster. She looks really comfy in it but I know even three months ago she would have been too slight. They grow so quickly sometimes!

nipplesofthenorth · 30/01/2011 21:40

Maxi Cosi Rodi XP is great. It still reclines and has a very supportive headrest. Highly recommend it.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 30/01/2011 21:41

I'm in the same situation but ds2 is only 2.8.

The only seat that I can find that fits all the criteria is the Britax 2 way elite, but it's only sold through the In Car Safety Centre in Milton Keynes which is a days round trip from us - not something I'm able to do at the moment.

Mothercare said as he's over 18kgs he has to come out of his Britax Eclipse (I think that's what it's called) and sold me a Maxi Cosi Rodi XR after saying he fitted in it well.

Half way home, and on a busy dual carriageway, ds2 slipped himself out of the top bit of the belt, so was just restrained by the lap belt. He's back in the 5 point harness seat now. It has to be safer than the alternative imo.

thisisyesterday · 30/01/2011 21:44

if any of you are in west sussex and want to see a britax 2 way elite I have one that you're welcome to try out!!!

greyriver · 30/01/2011 21:46

We have the britax two way for both dds.Elder is 6 and younger is three.DD1 is light, but not short for six, still fits in it,so it should fit your DS.

NancyDrewHasaClue · 30/01/2011 22:24

Greyriver we actually have the tott as well. I have never read the specs so I am suprised that there is a difference in how long the harness can be used - they are pretty much identical.

I don't know about official safety ratings but the Tott xt particularly is very secure around head and neck - no lolling heads when DC falls asleep in it. The other advantage of the xt is that the head rest bit can be moved up so DD (who is now 6) can use this but have her head protected whereas in the tott she is now taller than the back of the seat.

brachy · 31/01/2011 22:02

My DD (age 6) is in a Britax Elite with a 5 point harness still. My DS (16months) is rear facing in a Britax Elite- we got it a few weeks ago from the incarsafetycenter. They delivered the next day!
DS seems to love his new spacious seat. DD claims it to be very comfy.
Highly recommend the Elite. It will keep the child harnessed until 25kgs, though you can use it as a booster, but we prefer not to.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 02/02/2011 20:09

NancyDrewHasaClue - does the Tott recline at all, it doesn't seem to say either way in the spec.

If it doesn't, do you find it a problem when your lo nods off during a journey? Does their head end up lolling forwards?

Can I also ask where you got it from? I live in South Wales and cannot find a local supplier.

OADCB · 07/02/2011 08:50

Op how do you get on in your search?

Can Only find tott xt not tott online.
