We're going with a friend and their dc's, they've never camped before. It all sounded so great, we hope to convert them to the joys of camping, but now the weather forecast isn't great. Am about to starting packing, we set off tomorrow. It's our first trip this year, so I'm trying to remember all the essentials.

Wilts · 26/05/2010 18:05

We are off to Anglesey this weekend. The boys will love it and I will declare I am never camping again

Batteryhuman · 26/05/2010 18:06

Looking forward to meeting you in France Lucy. We're off to Wychwood festival the weekend after next thereby giving the weather time to get over its bank mholiday sulks. I got v sunburnt there last year.

SixtyFootDoll · 26/05/2010 18:08

I am off to the Gower for my first camping trip as a grown up and parent.

Am looking at all weather forecast sights an donly beleiving the ones that are good.

What are cobbstones used for?

SanctiMoanyArse · 26/05/2010 18:10

Hello sixty! If you see an overloaded battered old spacewagon on the motorway that will be us then , do wave.

Cobblestones are fuel for cobb barbecues: you can use other forms of fuel but they are easy and ready to cook in a few minutes

HousewifeOfOrangeCounty · 26/05/2010 18:10

sticks for wet wellies = great idea.

SixtyFootDoll · 26/05/2010 18:28

Hi Sancti! ( cant get used to your new name!)
If you see a Zafira with an exploding roof box - that'll be us!!

Sticks for wellies... fab.

Should I take a heater?!! Or is that too wimpy?

SanctiMoanyArse · 26/05/2010 18:36

Heaters wimpy

Sriously if aheater will help you enjopy your trip, take

And wellie sticks are a girl guiding / St Johns Ambulance cadets staple: I cannot take credit alas

HousewifeOfOrangeCounty · 26/05/2010 19:55

Heaters are not for 'real' campers - hot water bottles are though.

We are also having real camp fires, makes so much difference at night - bliss.

OP posts:
SixtyFootDoll · 26/05/2010 20:58

Hot water bottles!!

HousewifeOfOrangeCounty · 26/05/2010 20:59

To be honest I find a large dose of alcohol helps warm the cockles.

OP posts:
SanctiMoanyArse · 26/05/2010 21:14

Ah yes the alcohol definitely an essential

Pop PJ's on under day clothes after dinner, then when youa re outside you have a few layers- just remove the top layer at bedtime

And remember that abre arms and legs get filthy cold at night so unsexy nighties a must.... and bed socks

Slubberdegullion · 26/05/2010 21:16

I'm still rather fond of my eat fat before bedtime to keep you warm top tip.

SanctiMoanyArse · 26/05/2010 21:19

I eat fat all the time

We had our SSD assessment today and I rather ruefully mentioned that in order to get ds1 over the 4st amrk I ended up gaining 3 stone and Dh 2!

So diets after Whitsun methinks.

Booze and crisps a Peachy essential, or olives, or if tehre's a Morriosns (there is where we are, well it's S Wales- so within 40 minutes drive anyway LOL, nearest supermarket) their stuffed pimentos are delish.

Gourmet fat before bestime OK?

SanctiMoanyArse · 26/05/2010 21:20

Oh and if tehre's a Waitriose their giant pretzels....

SanctiMoanyArse · 26/05/2010 21:22

Sixty I beleive Dh is up for tour next year, if so will introduce you to the wonders of Cobbs LOL

PandaG · 26/05/2010 21:24

we are off tomorrow night down to Dorset for the long weekend (got INSET on Friday)

wine, gin, chocolate and crisps are a must in the evenings, as are good friends to share the holiday with.

car is already packed - fitting everything in is a fine art and takes ages. We are only going for 4 nights this time, how on earth will we get everything in in the summer when it is 3 weeks?!

SixtyFootDoll · 26/05/2010 21:28

Sancti am liking the gourmet snacks idea...and the booze.

SanctiMoanyArse · 26/05/2010 21:32

Ah we do gourmet food when camping; often simple, but loads fo fresh fish from seaside, or farmewr's amrket stuff with salad and fresh breads etc.

Last year we did a full roast beef meal for 6 with yorkshire puds and veg on a picnic table near St davids LOL - was yum; thinking on pork tenderloin this year.

SanctiMoanyArse · 26/05/2010 21:32

And YY to packing

In the summer we have our four boys, a massive tent, my parents and their kit in our space wagon and DH's smart car.

Am already weeping in anticipation.

SixtyFootDoll · 26/05/2010 21:36

Sancti you really have this camping down to a fine art

SanctiMoanyArse · 26/05/2010 21:42

Abso-bloody-lutely!

But then we will go probably 5 times a year so we#'re well practised. First time we went years ago, we had an Argos tent, used the boys car seats for chairs and borrowed seats, single stove burner and air bed for ourselves- 2 ready beds, and a travel cot and that was all teh kit we had. Was idyllic though (Wood farm near Charmouth in hot weather- perfect)

SixtyFootDoll · 26/05/2010 22:03

Will get there I hope...

PandaG · 27/05/2010 09:51

yy to decent camoping food - I'm cooking tomorrow night (we go with friends and take it in turns) and will be doing a smoked salmon pasta dish, with salads and decent bread, and then probably strawbs and cream.

when camping with just DH last year we had 3 course meals, though I tended to cheat and buy the puddings from the local Waitrose!

madhairday · 27/05/2010 17:51

We're off tomorrow to the Lake District. weather looking changeable. Have spent most of today packing. How do people do camping packing lightly? Toooo much stuff. Looking forward to first camp of the year though.
