Took dd camping for the first time at...

8 weeks.

spudmasher · 20/02/2009 20:55

Camped for the first time when dd2 was 9 months.
Dh is wrong. It is magical.

SweetCheeksLovesSweetTalk · 20/02/2009 20:56

Thanks SOH

I love MN, I told him MNers would have camped with younger DC

No he is very, very WRONG

Camped with DD (PFB) at 5 mths, then 6 mths, then a full 10 days at 7 mths.
Took DS for first time at 10mths (but would have been earlier if he had been born at a different time of year!)

She will be fine and all the fresh air in the day should make her sleep like a dream so you can sit outside the tent drinking wine

duckyfuzz · 20/02/2009 20:56

he's wrong, we took DTs when they were 8 months, and every year since, your DD will love it

SweetCheeksLovesSweetTalk · 20/02/2009 20:56

Thanks spudmasher

What would she sleep in? Can you get smaller sleeping bags?

OP posts:
feetheart · 20/02/2009 20:58

So far DS has slept under his own duvet with blankets if necessary but this year (at 3.6) he will inherit DD's children's sleeping bag whilst she moves up to an adult one.

Sorry to disagree! Took dd camping at about 2 years old, absolute nightmare - she wouldn't sleep at all as it was too cold. I ended up driving home in the middle of the night. But then I hated camping any-way, so maybe it is in her genes

noonki · 20/02/2009 21:07

we took ds1 and ds2 to a festival when ds1 was 22 months and ds2 was 12 weeks. DSS was 10.

DS1 - slept on a blow up mattress with DSS

DS2 - slept in the phil and teds carrycot.

my friends had kids of a similar age and had it really sorted.

Lots of blankets and double duvets as a base, with blankets on the top. and they all four slept on it far more comfy.

We thought it would be a bit of a nightmare as we went in a big group of about 20 toddlers in all. We thought they would awke ujp all night.

I amma really light sleeper and only once heard a baby wake up and our slept until nearly 8am .

also it rained quite a bit but we all had waterproofs and was fine.

go for it

SweetCheeksLovesSweetTalk · 20/02/2009 21:11

You have to sleep in waterproofs?

DS1 went at 7 months (he was born in october) ds2 went at 7 weeks in a campervan and then at 13 weeks for real in a tent!

At 22 months I'd either take a travel cot for her to sleep in with lots of blankets or a ready bed with a junior sleeping bag aswell.

Our ds's wear their usual pj's and then an all in one fleecey suit, inside a sleeping bag with a fleece balnket added on top when we go to bed.

They love it and sleep better than at home!

gigglewitch · 20/02/2009 21:16

have taken then 5mo dd - with her 2 older brothers (2yo and 5yo)
not exactly easy, but do-able So glad she was still fully bf.

SweetCheeksLovesSweetTalk · 20/02/2009 21:22

I feel reassured (am def. not telling DH about Helen's experience!)

Off to google and see how much its all going to cost

DD had her first trip (a weekend) at 8 weeks. Then at 5 months old she went with us camping for 2 months round Europe.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 20/02/2009 21:27

Yes but if Helens' experience was due to her daughter being cold - just remind yourself to pack more bedding than you think you might need and you'll be fine

sundew · 20/02/2009 21:37

We took dd2 at that age - we have airbeds and proper sleeping bags for both dds (they are Gelert who do a childrens range). WEe tried those Ready Beds the first time we went camping which were a disater - you need proper sleeping bags. I also pack lots of blankets as I hate being cold so the dds are always well wrapped up!

Ivykaty44 · 20/02/2009 21:40

Yes took dd to france for three weeks when she was 6 months old. Then went camping again in Devon when she was 9 months old. Then went camping for 4 weeks when she was 18 months old in northern spain and through france.

Wouldn't have dreamt of not taking her camping she is my dd and we like to holiday together - so off we go

4andnotout · 20/02/2009 21:41

I think dd1 was 6 weeks old when we took her camping to the racing at british superbikes
Start them early is what i say!

PerArduaAdNauseum · 20/02/2009 21:41

First camping trip at 4 months - only worry was overheating... Never worried about being cold as you don't need to stop adding layers till they're spherical

dragonbutter · 20/02/2009 21:43

DS2 was about 8 weeks.
DS1 was later because he was born in October and we waited for the summer.

SweetCheeksLovesSweetTalk · 20/02/2009 21:50

You've all convinced dh it'll be fine so I'm off to start another thread asking for suggestions about tents, please come and give me advice

We took our twin girls camping at about 15 months. I remember trying to shove two travel cots into the tent . they were fine at night, just a bit of a mare in the day when they both charged off in different directions, without the constraints of fences etc.

littlemisschatalot · 21/02/2009 07:52

took ds at 6 weeks in a tent in scotland, may bank holiday. it was fine.

SammyK · 21/02/2009 08:41

We took DS camping at 10 months old - he loved it!

Buy an all in one waterproof for her (regatta do them), and she will be beyond happy.

SweetCheeksLovesSweetTalk · 21/02/2009 16:47

I cant find them on the regatta website - must be looking in the wrong place
