Do you? Always? I mean every single time without exception?

Just wondered if I'm missing a trick?
(slinks off slightly embarassed).

No use a bucket, lined with carrier bag and quarter filled with cat litter.

Just come back today from gorgeous campsite in Anglesey but loos were miles away (and I'm a lazy mare!) so bucket used even more than usual!

Bucket with a tight-fitting lid. Keep it and the loo-roll in the tent porch, not outside, otherwise foxes might knock the bucket over, and the dew will wreck the loo-roll. Make wure you Dettox the bucket every morning, or it will really reeek after a few days.

Never ever pee in the hedge behind your tent. I've camped on pitches where this had been done by previous campers. It may not have smelled for them, but for later campers it does. Besides, it attracts vermin.

When we go again , we will be sure to take the bucket ! last year, in the middle of the night, I squatted over DD3's potty !! ALMOST overflowed ! and the noise sounded like I was running a bath !! The children found it very amusing next morning, and the song of the day was, "Mummy weed on my potty, mummy weed on my potty "

Troutpout · 21/07/2008 20:37

No... i'm not normal though...have mahoosive bladder

ShePeeTeePee · 22/07/2008 16:55

Ah - I read that thread about buckets with lids and just thought you were a safety-conscious lot with your fire buckets!

Bucket with a lid for the middle of the night.

For trips to the loo, I have a 'loo bag' containing toilet paper, soap and towel

memoo · 22/07/2008 18:41

we have a portable toilet

Whizzz · 22/07/2008 18:46

I'm liking the bucket/carrier bag/cat litter idea!

MindingMum · 22/07/2008 19:57

We have portable toilet too but it's never been out of it's box - looks like too much faff to me compared to a bucket

memoo · 22/07/2008 20:01

its no faff at all, did use a bucket once but DD kicked it over in the night, the smell of wee lingered in the tent for days.

With the porta loo all the wee is flushed away into the bottom bit so even if you knocked it over it won't spill, dead easy to empty, just pull out bottom bit and empty it like you would your bucket

stukkaroo · 22/07/2008 20:03

do you mind me asking where to dispose of the cat litter stuff??i dont have cats so dont know how it works....im off to a festie this w/e with just pottie and hopefully a hedge behind me! (its only once a year!)

memoo - that's useful thanks,. I should have at least read the instructions before commenting What is it like for poo cos my problem would be that DS (5) only knows he needs a poo when one falls out when he's weeing!

stukkaroo - I tie the bag up and bin it. If there is any liquid in there, pour some more litter in before you tie. I bought the cheapest cat litter i could find this time and it wasn't very good compared to the wood based one I normally use.

SpringfieldMum · 23/07/2008 10:05

memoo - the camping toilet FLUSHES!! That's amazing - how does it work?

memoo · 23/07/2008 11:48

you have to put some water and chemicals in it then you just pump this lever thing at the front and it all flushes away into a tank in the base.

Have to admit though that we only use it for wees, your still have to empty the bottom tank and i'm not sure i caould deal with poo!!

Surfermum · 23/07/2008 11:52

I had too many near over-flow situations in the middle of the night with dd's potty, so went for a bucket. But last year the bucket kept getting knocked over (yuuuuuk) so we are now the proud owners of a camping toilet - and it is bloody brilliant.

You get special dissolvable paper and chemicals to break that and the poo down. It doesn't smell and is very easy to use.

squilly · 23/07/2008 20:54

I'm looking at the biotoi www.biobags.co.uk/products/BioToi%20V%202.htm

It was on the gadget show and looks really cool. It's not overly cheap, but it seems a sensible solution.

I did think about a nappy pail, with the lid on, but I couldn't face hanging my enormous a**e over an unstable bucket. I'm so darned tall and clumsy, I'd probably tip it.

And we're probably only doing wees. Poos are a bit more toilet oriented imo. And dd is 7 now, so generally has a fair wadge of warning before wanting to poo.

Sorry for the detail!

squilly · 23/07/2008 20:55

Quick hijack...has anyone here used a shewee??

ShePeeTeePee · 23/07/2008 22:33

Nooooo... and won't now Prettycandles has warned me about weeing behind the tent. SIL has one, but she's a game lass with a love of unsanitary countries.

Squilly, I bought a Shewee and used it for the first time on holiday last week. It was fab - throughly recommend (for adults ...untested system for children).
Larkspur's top Shewee tips are:

  1. Have a few sheets of newspaper in the front bit of your tent to stand on while you wee (just incase of rogue drips - didn't ever happen but felt it important to be prepared!
  2. Have wodge of kitchen roll alongside newspaper.
3.Have an empty water bottle or the like - at least a litre (LOL) 4.Wee, using Shewee, into bottle - it you direct it down the side there isn't that Niagra Falls sound you get with potty or bucket. 5.Keeping Shewee in bottle remove from body and use wodge of kitchen roll to do necessaries.
  1. Remove it from bottle and lay on newspaper and then put lid on bottle.
  2. Crawl back into sleeping bag.
8.In the morning take to loo and empty out and rinse. All very discreet too.

Absolutely blardy marvellous. We were miles from the loo block.

larkspur · 23/07/2008 22:59

Adult women of course ...

ShePeeTeePee · 23/07/2008 23:03

Oh... a bottle. How inspired. This is great ladies - an enlightenment.

(Do men wee into bottles when they go camping...?)

Milliways · 23/07/2008 23:07

I always go late, then first thing in the morning. COuldn't stand a wee bucket! Also, the rest of family would be listening & sniggering.....
