PrincePeahead wants a tent....

and I don't know where to start evaluating the 10,000 tents on the market! Please advise, oh tent-obsessed mumsnetters...

We have a couple of small cheapy tents - one "2" man that he and DD1 barely squeeze into and one 3 man that isn't much better. This summer he and 3 of the 4 peaheads are planning on camping in the adjacent field and have invited friends over for camping nights etc. Me and the 4th peahead MAY be persuadable at some point too. So it needs to be big enough to sleep us all in comfort and harmony, and to have a nice covered bit to sit in when it is drizzling and play about in, but it doesn't need to be able to store masses of stuff and fridges etc.

Also once it is up it is likely to stay up for a few weeks at a time and only get moved about to enable grass cutting etc, unless you tell me this is a really bad idea for some reason.

So what shall I get? Budget - god I don't know. Under £300. Nearer £200 would be nice. Is that possible? I have no idea. Any thoughts? Thank you!

i am dreadi the day i have to stat takin the dsses camping

i know they'll love it. i loved it. but i doubt i'll love it as much 30-odd yeas late Gin

i eckon i have anothe 5 yeas befoe it becomes an issue

i shall come to you fo advice then

Blandmum · 21/05/2008 13:32

You need at least 2 berth larger than the number of people going to sleep in the tent, double the number if you intend to use it for longer periods of time.

You want a HH of at least 2000mm, 3000mm if you can.

Good names are Outwell, vango, gelert and sunncamp.

Try to see the tent up before you buy.....some tents slope too much for me.

we were in Halfords at the weekend and they have a 4 man tent package on offer for £100 which includes 2 double airmattresses and 4 sleeping bags as well as a 3 compartment tent. it all packs up into a neat wheely bag - or as dh commented it all comes in a neat wheely bag - whether you can get it all back in probably depends on your origami skills.

i thought it looked like a really good deal if you only want a tent for the equivalent of a back garden rather than hard core camping. i hate camping but was tempted to get it as it seemed such good value.

PrincessPeaHead · 21/05/2008 13:35

so I need an 8 man tent if 6 of us are in it? HH yes, dh is 6'3 and would like headroom. hmm will go look. I suspect my budget might be tight then, I was looking at 6 man tents...

tutt I'll be an expert by then no doubt. The children LOVE tents . mind you - 5 years? DD2 is 4 and wants to sleep in the tent in the winter!

Oh dear I've just seen the time. I have to watch dd2 lose another play in a rounders match. If anyone wants to point me in the direction of a real live monster tent suitable for my brood I would be mucho grateful

do not get the halfords one- my xp has it and last we used it it leaked!! all over my clothes- nobody elses just mine!
i liked it when we first used it, but not impressed at all now we used it in cold/wet weather

WendyWeber · 21/05/2008 13:41

Ohhhhh, I get it - "our vendor"!

It's time you got that R fixed, Tutte darling.

PPH, if you plan to leave it up for weeks on end you def need a proper tent, and for DH's benefit your best bet would be a tunnel style - some of them are the same shape as an air-raid shelter, with the same head height all the way along.

PeachyWontLieToYou · 21/05/2008 13:42

two spring to mind (as a similar sized family with a camping addiction): our tent, the 8 man ontarioo (Khyam) is good, excelent value for monet at £199 but i would suggest the additional canopy is an essential (and i rather like the fitted carpet too!)

also we saw the new version outwell sun valley 8 at the weekend, now others on here will know that me considering an outwell is , but considering it I am (though may have to wait until next year)

hth

WendyWeber · 21/05/2008 13:43

eg this Khyam - £270 5000mm hydrostatic head

Tutter · 21/05/2008 13:43

Gin [buffoon]

i will tell you his name by email...

PeachyWontLieToYou · 21/05/2008 13:44

ontario

WendyWeber · 21/05/2008 13:45

Peachy's Khyam Ontario - very similar to the Quebec, doesn't give its height though (the Quebec is 225 cm)

PeachyWontLieToYou · 21/05/2008 13:45

sun valley

Mercy · 21/05/2008 13:45

HH stands for hydrostatic head not headroom!

hydrostatic head

We've got an Outwell Montana which we like, this is the site so you can see the range tents

PeachyWontLieToYou · 21/05/2008 13:46

ontario over 2m, 210 iirc? tall, anyhow! walking height throughout, which is what matters

pph if you want can link you to my picturetrail, photos of it with canopy and the boys so will give you a better idea of size

PeachyWontLieToYou · 21/05/2008 13:47

hh on sun valley and ontario 5000

but over 3000 is absolutely fibe tbh

PeachyWontLieToYou · 21/05/2008 13:49

oldest child was 7

WendyWeber · 21/05/2008 13:52

Ontario is 225 as well Peachy, it did give the height on your link (it's an external height, but plenty)

Ontario looks like a great deal for you, pph - good price, free groundsheet, lots of head height, lots of HH, should be fine left up for the whole summer

Peachy, how does the carpet work? What's it made of? Is it like kitchen floor tiles so you can hose it down?

wobblyknicks · 21/05/2008 13:54

Not trying to hijack the thread as a 'for sale' one but I've got a 12-man tent I bought (well, went thirds on) ages ago for a trip which never happened so it's never been used - cover might be dusty, been under my bed but the tent inside will be as new, only opened it once to check it when I got it.

It's by 'Nature Bound' but can't find a pics on the net, this is similar but you get 4 in each 'pod' instead of 3 and it's dark green.

Was going to put it in the paper in a couple of months but having seen this it might be what you're looking for. Would like about £90 for it, plus whatever postage would be (I vaguely remember paying something like £20 or £30 for delivery but haven't a clue without weighing it). But definitely don't want to hijack the thread so no worries if you're not interested

Mercy · 21/05/2008 13:57

Just spoken to a tall friend who recommends the Kyham Indiana!
