AIBU Toilet

Hi everyone,

I am going camping for the first time with my husband and 5-year-old at a family festival with friends. We have bought a huge six-man tent which I’m really excited about as I used to struggle when camping with the lack of space.

But I have been camping many times before as a teenager and the toilets and showers were always so grim.

The thing I have always hated is needing the loo in the night and having to trek to loos in the dark. I always found I would wake up and not be able to get back to sleep after going to the loo /psychologically would always be needing the loo during the night.

Because of this I suggested a chemical toilet to my husband and he said that was disgusting even though I said I’d manage the cleaning and disposal of it and only wee in it during the night.

So I suggested a camping toilet using toilet bags instead and even suggested a separate ‘toilet tent’.

Again he has said no because it is too disgusting apparently.

My final suggestion has been to suggest I get a disposable Shewee type thing (basically lots of cardboard Shewees that you put in the bin after use) and a toilet bag that you wee into that turns it into a gel that you can then put into a bin.

Hubby still says no because what happens if I miss the bag and he apparently thinks it’s gross to be weeing while in the tent 🤪.

AIBU to be annoyed by my husband’s attitude to this?

Yes - the toilet block. If it's just wee, pour it into the loo same as normal. When I use the cereal container I just put the lid on, and carry it upright disguised in a bag because openly carrying a tupperware of piss across the site is where I draw the line 😂

If you've used the gel bags or a bin bag/cat litter combi, tie that up and put it in a bin.

To the person who suggested a wild wee, the OP is going to a festival and that's not suitable there because of the volume of people.

I just take a lidded bucket and empty the wee in the morning. Toilets could be a long way off at a festival, I wouldn't want to be camped near toilets anyway. And tent zips seem noisy in the middle of the night when going in and out of tent. I bet after a few drinks he'll be begging to use your bucket anyway

We now have a caravan but when we had a test we had a Porta Potti in the tent as it made nights much more reasonable. No problem emptying it or using it.

If space is a premium but you want a seat then the CarpLife Bivvy Loo is great - very strong and folds down small.

There are some very prudish people in this thread!

A nature wee at a festival isn’t ideal because it makes the whole site smell of piss. However… judging by my own festival experiences all the men will be nature wee-ing six feet from your tent, creating an acrid stench by day two, so you may as well join them.

I bought some of the gel bags for my last camping trip and they are great. They solidify quite quickly so you can reuse them several times before they need throwing away. You just seal them and put them in the bin when you’re done. We allocated a corner of the tent as the wee corner, and put a towel down in case anyone missed the bag, which they didn’t as they’re really easy to use.

I have previously had to do a festival wee in front of my partner into an empty Pot Noodle container (I recommend the extra large ones) and he still fancies me (and Pot Noodles). Your husband is being a prissy twat. It’s just a wee. Big deal.

The wee bags are good, but for some reason my bladder goes into overdrive when camping and I end up overflowing them. I got lots of good advice on a thread last year and fashioned something with a large empty peanut butter carton and some pads, but I'm glad we've not gone camping this year.
