Toast

This might be the most tedious topic or the most exciting, I am braced for sinking without trace. Do we all know that these devices for toasting bread on gas stove are totally unnecessary? We did cheese toasties in the pan while camping just by laying them in the pan then turning them. Started with a little oil but just as well without. A slice of toast with no filling would be just as good done in the pan. Is everyone already doing this or have I saved breakfast for countless families?

I cancelled toast whilst camping because all the gadgets just didn't create toast as it should be.

I suppose you are making a 'fried bread' toastie?

BikeRunSki · 25/08/2020 15:54

I thought this was going to be about wearing organic wool fair isle sweaters to keep warm in a tent....

We usually have cold bagels for camping breakfast, or damper bread if I am feeling super motivated.

Beamur · 25/08/2020 15:55

Is damper bread the same as the slightly soggy stuff I was eating last week in rainy Scotland...Grin??
I tend just to have bread and jam. Toast seems an impossible dream.

Redcrayons · 25/08/2020 15:57

I had one of the toasting gadgets. The bread went from uncooked to not-quite on fire in nanoseconds.

Hard pass.

Honestly guys, just heat up a pan, if you're feeling fancy put a very small amount of oil in (we take an old frylight bottle with normal cooking oil in, a spritz of that would), lay your bread in it, turn it over after a minute or two until it's browned to your taste.

My first effort was two slices with a slab of brie and some port jelly in between. Heaven.

That’s fried bread not toast surely?

Namechangeforthis88 · 25/08/2020 16:28

The oil wasn't even noticeable once it was done, not like a fried bread at all. I thought oil was needed to stop it sticking but DH tried it with no oil at all, just a dry pan, and it was grand. Cheese toasties and soup on a rainy day.

I want a cheese toastie now.

BackwardsGoing · 25/08/2020 18:03

First picture = pointless toaster. It doesn't work and just annoys everyone.

Second picture = excellent toaster.

I don't want oil on my toast.

Well I did not expect the topic to by quite so controversial.

EHU and take a toaster.
Yep!
Mysterian · 25/08/2020 20:09

I use a toaster like Backwards's's second picture. It works fab.

SirVixofVixHall · 25/08/2020 20:12

Where can one buy such an item as the little perforated shovely thing ?

SirVixofVixHall · 25/08/2020 20:24

Ooh. Thank you.
Will it work with a wood stove, or only with a gas one ?

Mysterian · 25/08/2020 20:47

I use mine (bottom option) on gas. It's got a metal mesh underneath which gets red hot and spreads the heat around evenly. Not sure how wood stoves work. Probably would be ok, but would it get smokey?

Stella8686 · 25/08/2020 20:52

I take an electric toaster and electric kettle

DimidDavilby · 25/08/2020 20:55

That is very exciting news @Namechangeforthis88

GreasyFryUp · 25/08/2020 21:02

I do toast (and crumpets, and bagels and warmed up pizzas) your way OP 👍

BackwardsGoing · 25/08/2020 21:04

@SirVixofVixHall what kind of wood stove do you bring camping?

Hedgehog44 · 25/08/2020 21:05

What's wrong with electric hookup and a toaster?!

Bwlch · 25/08/2020 21:09

What's wrong with electric hookup and a toaster?I

Whats wrong with using the grill?

SirVixofVixHall · 25/08/2020 21:30

I am mulling over which stove to buy at the moment, tempted by a woodburner. A frontier stove, or maybe a solo.
We should be camping now but it is incredibly windy out there !
