Toast

This might be the most tedious topic or the most exciting, I am braced for sinking without trace. Do we all know that these devices for toasting bread on gas stove are totally unnecessary? We did cheese toasties in the pan while camping just by laying them in the pan then turning them. Started with a little oil but just as well without. A slice of toast with no filling would be just as good done in the pan. Is everyone already doing this or have I saved breakfast for countless families?

I second Mysterian's post about the second toaster (the fold-up one with the mesh at the bottom - it's brilliant and makes toast in about 30 seconds when it's heated up. (In fact, Amazon tells me that I purchased that exact toaster 2 years ago Smile.)

Beamur · 25/08/2020 21:37

@Namechangeforthis88

Well I did not expect the topic to by quite so controversial.
Grin I think a hook up and a toaster is missing out on the hair shirt aspects of UK camping. It's not meant to be good, it's character building..
TooMinty · 25/08/2020 22:02

I didn't realise making toasties like this was unusual - what did everyone do when they were poor students who didn't own a toastie maker?! I would spread butter/marge on 2 slices of bread. Put one in pan butter side down, put in filling (cheese or beans or both at once!) then put other one on butter side up. Flip over to do other side then enjoy!

I did toast a crumpet in a dry non stick pan over the gas ring last time we camped. Absolute game changer.

BackwardsGoing · 25/08/2020 22:14

Portable wood burning stoves while camping. That is serious shit @SirVixofVixHall. I think a toaster would work well on that.

Twickerhun · 25/08/2020 22:16

We take brioche. No toasting needed. Can’t be arsed with the faff first thing. But also I tend to agree with pp that camping should be character building and therefor most options here are inappropriately civilised.

DocOfTheBay · 25/08/2020 23:40

OP, you caused controversy with the oil which led to fried bread accusations. If only you had stuck to your DH’s no-oil method.

We make toasties in the pan. Or fake quesadillas by using wraps instead of bread. Or use this www.hartsofstur.com/diablo.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjw7ZL6BRCmARIsAH6XFDIxQfSuyX9nPNa0qj50DsdqvyK1zg4oU6sXRS9PUq8rdLugYNfBK0oaAo7tEALw_wcB

We never camp with EHU.

DocOfTheBay · 25/08/2020 23:42

My next project is bread making over the fire in a Dutch Pot.

Hot bread.

BackwardsGoing Grin
I feel a bit sorry for anyone camping this week - it is fierce out there.

SirVixofVixHall · 26/08/2020 00:28

People have electricity when camping ? This is a thing ?

Bwlch · 26/08/2020 08:46

People have electricity when camping ? This is a thing ?

It is for us. Our days of roughing it are over. We need it to run the lighting, gas heating and the water pump. Though we mainly use solar, occasionally an EHU in the winter.

SirVixofVixHall · 26/08/2020 10:37

Is that in a Camper van Bwlch ?

Bwlch · 26/08/2020 12:51

No, a trailer tent, or folding camper if you prefer. It's got plush carpet, double glazing, insulated walls and roof, so usable year round in comfort.

SirVixofVixHall · 26/08/2020 14:49

Clearly there is a whole world of camping gear that has passed me by , as I have no idea what that is !

SirVixofVixHall · 26/08/2020 14:55

I googled - how amazing ! Beds that unfold and actual seating !

Beamur · 26/08/2020 15:01

I was very tempted by a trailer tent a few years ago but baulked at the cost. Really nice though.

Namechangeforthis88 · 26/08/2020 15:57

@DocOfTheBay I was disproportionately riled by the fried bread remark and realised it was time to step back and just be pleased that a thread I thought might sink without trace was actually riding high on the camping board.

Such is my love of camping gadgetry I'm thinking of asking for a subscription to a camping magazine for Christmas, just to look at reviews and stuff.

We were thinking of getting a tent with a stove but then we thought that twice we have had expensive tents that lasted only one or two family holidays, while the El Cheapos lasted for years. Our last polycotton Vango with steel poles was a nightmare in high winds. Twice I came out in the morning after a storm expecting carnage around the campsite and everyone in their Decathlon bargains seemed completely unscathed. So we went for a bog standard mid-market tunnel tent instead. Disappointingly, we no longer have any reason to shop for tents.

Namechangeforthis88 · 26/08/2020 15:58

We'd absolutely get a trailer tent if only we have somewhere to try it if it came home wet.

OP posts:
Bwlch · 26/08/2020 16:14

The "canvas" on ours is a double skin of pvc material with insulation sandwiched between. It can be put away wet without any fear of rot, although it would probably be a bit stinky next time it was opened up.

Namechangeforthis88 · 27/08/2020 09:43

Hold on a minute @Bwlch, you get PVC trailer tents? Help me out with search terms, any brand names or model names? Do they turn up second hand? To think it all began with toast.

OP posts:
Bwlch · 27/08/2020 10:54

Dandy

Unfortunately, they are not made anymore. We bought ours secondhand. It's the third one we have had. All have an insulated roof but the walls and heating were an option so you need to be careful which one you buy.

The PVC is a mixed blessing when it comes to the awning. All I can say is, I'm glad I spend so much time at the gym!

Namechangeforthis88 · 28/08/2020 07:21

We'd definitely be looking at second hand anyway!

Ooh love the look of the diablo thing in it any good? And have ordered meshy toast maker....my pan attempts get scoffed at as not toast!
So someone is getting that for Christmas...
I love a camping gadget although have massively downsized tent am under instructions not to fill car with gadgets instead.....

although was camping in the gale whilst this thread originally on...some very wobbly air tents but luckily no one too damaged

DidoAtTheLido · 12/09/2020 21:19

The square box type toast makers are on sale in Halfords for £2-50 atm.

DidoAtTheLido · 12/09/2020 21:22

averythinline I have one of those diablo toastie makers - they are ace. They seal the edges of the bread.

I also have a 'pie iron' which can be used for toasties without sealed edges, also burgers and sausages. Google 'pie iron' and also 'jaffle iron' for a whole range that can be used on a campfire as well as the gas.
