And do you need a roofbox for all your camping gear???

We used to use a van (had to wedge in 2 dogs as well as camping gubbins)...until we bought a camper van (still use a tent to sleep in though)

PandaG · 08/05/2007 14:48

we have a Toyota Prius. Yes we need a roofbox, and even with it is a real squeeze, especially as we have just bought a fridge, and our tent is huge. Hoping to get a dual fuel car that can pull a trailer when we change the car

ArcticRoll · 08/05/2007 14:49

Deffo to a roofbox.
We have an estate car as well and still not enough room.
Mind you I don't do minimal camping.

emily05 · 08/05/2007 14:51

depnds how many of you there are.

For me and my dh, and ds we have a big hatchback (peuget 307) and managed to fit all of our gear in it. This included 8 man tent and portaloo.

serenity · 08/05/2007 14:52

We've got an Estate, and we just managed with that last year. When we can afford it we'll get a roofbox (tbh a roof rack would be fine as I could just bungiecord the tent up there) We don't do 'minimal' camping either.

MrsBadger · 08/05/2007 14:56

vectra estate, no roofbox
but we camp rough and light

MrsBadger · 08/05/2007 14:57

(oh, but the bikes go on the roof)

Blu · 08/05/2007 14:57

Fiat Punto and no roof box. But only have one child.
Even so...

Blu · 08/05/2007 14:58

Yes, like MrsB we camp rough and light.

Actually I do most things rough and light.

Nemo2007 · 08/05/2007 15:05

Zafira. 3 children, 2 adults, 5 bikes on back, windsurfers and canoes on top. No roofbox. all camping gear inside. but we are quite minimalist about camping gear. we need to be to fit in all the cycling and watersports paraphanalia

Nemo2007 · 08/05/2007 15:17

fennel · 08/05/2007 15:19

Nemo there's usually a 3 wheeler buggy inside too. plus backpack. nappy bucket. etc. it all fits in.

Blandmum · 08/05/2007 15:22

and mondeo, but we have a roof box

puddle · 08/05/2007 15:26

Zafira.

We haven't taken bikes yet but envisage doing so this year so will need a bike rack. But the rest fits in the boot.

We take lots of stuff too - the zafira boots hold LOTS.

tombley · 08/05/2007 15:26

Saab not estate and a roof box. Things stuffed onto the floor at the back and pram strapped to the roof box bars and I'm still usually carying something on my lap. Luckily we don't have to travel far.

I was too lazy to tidy out dh's estate at the weekend and we went away for 2 nights in my Saxo. Managed a 4 berth tent, air beds, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, extra duvets, football and net for dd, 2 folding chairs and TONS of food. I am a master of sueezing things in

Troutpout · 08/05/2007 20:15

knackered old brava
and a roof box

Pixel · 08/05/2007 23:28

We've got a Renault Laguna with a roofbox but we haven't actually packed it up for camping yet. Last year we had a Rover hatchback with a roofbox and just about managed and the Renault has a bigger boot so I'm hopeful! (mind you we had a smaller tent then so...). There are 4 of us btw but we have to make room for ds's Major buggy which is a bit of a pain as it's so long.

We got an Astra estate (only 1.4L) last year simply because our tent wouldn't fit in the boot of the old Corsa!
Well all right, insurance, MOT and tax on the Corsa were all about to end and then FIL wrote off his car and needed a quick replacement, so it wasn't an impulse buy but the tent was the main reason.
We don't have anything on the roof, even with a pushchair in the boot.

PeachyChocolateEClair · 09/05/2007 12:38

Ancient Espace

A roof box came with the car for "£20, but we only plan to use t when we have parents (= 7 people) with us fro trips.

PeachyChocolateEClair · 09/05/2007 12:40

Actually we coped OK with a Proton and no box last year LOL

it seems to multiply, the camping stuff, over time
