Fiat ulysses (people carrier).
2 adults, 3 kids (aged 12,11 and 7) and we use a roof box if we go away for a week, but I do take lots of stuff.

Lucycat · 09/05/2007 13:21

Zafira and roofbox - great big 600 litre thing!

PC (pre kids) camped all summer in Europe firstly backpacking and then another time out of my beloved little Vauxhall Corsa!

That'll be another thread Lucycat - how old would children have to be to take them backpacking and camping? I'd love to do that with them but can't imagine it in the next decade.

Lucycat · 09/05/2007 14:23

oh god yes, I would love to do that, but my 2 are only 4 and (nearly) 7 so a way off yet!

I don't think i could stand the constant 'I'm tired'/ I can't walk any more /are we there yet.

and carrying stuff for 4 - mmm perhaps I'm getting soft in my old age

btw fennel, It's not rained yet today in Manchester....missing us?

PeachyChocolateEClair · 09/05/2007 14:26

We've said we'll take ds's backpacking when the youngest is 12. Eldest will be at least 17, though we might go earlier without youngest one/s.

I used to love abckpacking, Dh never been, but fancies it (mainly as is an excuse for another tent shopping trip I expect LOL)

fennel · 09/05/2007 14:37

But no, am not pining for Manchester, not at all .

UniSarah · 11/05/2007 17:07

Don't even need a car. bikes with front and rear panniers and a CTS trailer for the boy.

tarantula · 11/05/2007 17:11

No car here. Used to do bikes with panniers. Now just do rucksacks and bikes with dd in bike seat.

divamumplusbump · 11/05/2007 21:37

peugeot 407 estate and small trailer due to boat.

We have an old landrover and have put a shelf in the back. On top of the shelf goes our tent, bedding, 4 chairs, clothes, first aid kit and recovery/emergency gear etc.
Below we have a 40 litre slide out fridge...fabulous. On top of the fridge slides our table and large wooden cutting board. To the side of the fridge we have kitted out the back with drawers. They hold food cutlery/matches/zinc/etc etc,
Over the back wheels there is a little bit of a hollow and we managed to put a 20 litre jerry can on each side which we fill with water. DH attached a long hose and tap which feed by gravity so kids can easily have a drink or refill water bottles.
We don't like carrying anything on the roof.
We are just back from 8 1/2 months camping with dds 7+8. It is all in the organising and packing.....a place for everything and everything in it's place became our mantra!

Picasso for 4 of us. No roof box and surprisingly we haven't felt the need for one yet. Main reason we bought the Picasso was there is SO much room!
