Sleeping bags for larger people!

We've always taken our own 'proper' bedding but DH is keen to get sleeping bags as they'll take up less space in the car (I'm very handy with bedding rolls & unconvinced but that's another story).

He's 6ft 4 and slim but well built, I'm 5ft 3 and a size 22 (hopefully a 20 by the time we go!)

The most expensive option we've looked at was a double sb at about £75, so don't want to spend more than that. Have also looked at getting 2 pod style bags.

Any suggestions re good sized bags & whether to go for double or 2 singles.

I really feel the cold & am also concerned that sb won't be warm enough & will end up needing blankets thus defeating the object.

I've just bought a couple of eurohike XL mummy style bags. They've got all the benefits of a mummy bag with hoods etc but are a bit wider. The two zip together to make a double.

It might be worth a look on ebay/gumtree etc?

I don't like the mummy style ones. I know they are meant to keep you warmer but I hate not being able to move your legs much.
I also prefer a single to a double one.

I hate sleeping bags and for the last few years have taken a heavy winter duvet when DH and I go camping. I find its far warmer and comfier than any sleeping bag. My DH also complains about taking it, but its non-negotiable now. Have you looked at Go Outdoors, they have a good selection of sleeping bags at reasonable prices.

I'm bigger than you and DH & I have a double with loads of room. I think we got it in Argos, but check the sizes...the double was larger than the king size. It's a lot warmer too...shared body heat

crafty I am really reluctant to give up the comfort of taking an actual duvet - I bought us a £12.99 Value kingsize from Argos last year and it was so cosy it ended up on our bed instead of being kept in the loft with the camping gear!

I'm especially not keen this year as a/ I'd rather spend the money on doing things when we're away, and b/ it's the first time we'll have been for a whole week so will be a real pita if it's not warm/comfortable enough.

I can roll a single duvet and pillow up small enough to fit inside a pillowcase, so do manage to get the big one into a fairly compact shape for travelling.

magic that makes me feel much less uneasy about it from a size pov. I think looking at sizes and making sure we get it from somewhere that does returns so we check it for size when we get it would be the best idea or just not mentioning the subject and hoping he goes off the idea

What about something like the Hi Gear Snooozzz Deluxe Sleeping Pod from Go Outdoors (sorry can't link for some reason)? I am on the large side and after a couple of uncomfortable nights in a mummy bag at a festival recently I thought these looked good. I haven't bought one yet as we have decided to stick to a duvet for the time being but they do look quite warm and give a bit of extra wiggle room in the middle.

I think that was the single one I was considering Frozen.

Have decided that for the time being I am go to err on the side of saying nowt and hoping he goes off the idea.

We go camping in the first place because we don't have a huge holiday budget so as I said upthread I'd rather spend the money on activities or a couple of meals out while we're away tbh.

Just looked at the Snoooozzz details and definitely think that would be our best bet.

A double is a lovely idea but I can't imagine it ending well.

DH is a much better sleeper than me - I get up most nights for the loo and frequently suffer insomnia so will drive him nuts causing a draft every time I get in and out of a double bag.

The snooozzz are a lovely size. I've got a Coleman campion from go outdoors. It's a snug fit for my size 24+, but it's very warm.

I'd go sleeping bags, much warmer than a duvet :)

I bought a pod because I am both large and like to sleep legs akimbo so feel like I am in a truss in a mummy bag. I like it a lot - but I would say you would not be quite as cosy as under a duvet. I wear my winter jammies, socks and have a blanket under me and one for over if I need it and am ok.

I would counsel strongly against a double for many reasons not least that your DH is bound to move and be happily snoring away while a whistling draught howls around your neck. We also don't have a double air bed because I likened the whole experience to sleeping on a windy trampoline.

The gelert sleeping pod XL is huuuuuuuuge. Even the standard sleeping pods are pretty big but the XL is very very roomy

We have a double-height, kingsize inflatable bed which is bloody marvellous, however I suspect bag sharing would drive us both round the bend.

I feel the cold so will be in maximum fleecy PJs and bedsocks. I also sleep more or less in recovery position so looks like a pod will definitely be the best bet. Off to google the gelert one.

He's not mentioned his shortlist again, and I've not raised the subject...

Well, I have just ordered the Yellowstone Sleepwell 300: www.amazon.co.uk/Yellowstone-Sleepwell-300-Sleeping-Bag/dp/B00AOLKXPC, which is similar to the Hi Gear Snoozzz Deluxe, but cheaper and a bit lighter (2 season rather than 3). It gets good reviews though so I am going to give it a bit of a go and will report back.

I did originally want the Gelert XL one but they appear to be unavailable these days sadly.

Oh and wyrdbyrd, I feel the cold too so will be in full thermals and as many other layers as required.

We got a double and it's got lots of room and is much cosier than a single.

I'm a cub leader, I bought a gelert xxl pod as I like to starfish. I can't sleep in a mummy sleeping bag. I love it!! I broke the zip by being heavy handed at winter camp though.
I'll see how it goes at summer camp. I might buy a new one if I've totally ruined it. I will not buy anything different though. I'm a lifelong pod lover now.

not sleeping bags! they re so uncomfortable. let him buy a sleeping bag and you still take the duvet? H can sleep on a wire, he falls asleep t the drop of a hat, but I have to be comfortable and yes the trips to the loo, whereas he sleeps all night. We take the blow up air bed, a sheet and the duvet, it rolls down fairly compactly and takes up no more room than two sleeping bags.

Gelert pod here too and it's great although I would much rather a cotton lined sleeping bag.

Help this is why I'm trying to studiously avoid any further discussion about it.

There's 3 of us in an estate with a roof box, it's not like we're travelling in a Ford Fiesta!

I'm definitely going for a pod if necessary though - probably the Yellowstone as it's the cheapest.

This is another thing, with sleeping bags I think we'll need to take the chunky blankets, where as we could manage without with the duvet so it's a complete waste of money imho.

I feel really claustrophobic in a double if I share it with DP - on my own it's fab!

I use an extra wide single or the double on my own, but the last couple of times we've taken our duvet as well as the double bag, and it was pure luxury! I have the sleeping bag open towards him and he just has the duvet on top of him as he doesn't feel the cold as much, so if I need it I get an extra layer of duvet too. Plenty of space for getting snuggled up, no cold bum and no getting kicked in the night.

Take your duvet. If you're camping you NEED a good nights sleep.

Oh and my double bag is massive when rolled up. At least twice the size of a single, possibly even bigger as it has a nice brushed cotton lining. I could certainly squish a duvet to a similar size.
