First camping trip of the year, which I've been waiting for since…well…errr…. last year and it's going to pour down!

Gutted!!!!

Anybody else checking the 5 day forecast hourly, hoping upon hope that it's changed?? Sad

another one for east Sussex here.can we build ourselves a bubble??

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 21/05/2014 19:54

We're going to Brecon - it's going to be wet,

Last BH I started a post about how there was supposed to be widespread frosts at night. It was chilly, but there was no frost.

I'm hoping for a bit of rain rather than the torrent that is forecast atm!

Cereal0ffender · 21/05/2014 19:56

We canceled, going to take dc out if school and go next weekend. It is going to be the holy trinity of camping awfulness, cold wet and windy

headlesslambrini · 21/05/2014 19:58

Its somewhere between wrexham and bangor on dee. Called The Plassey. Am on phone so cant link it. More expensive than we normally pay but the fishing and swimming is included in the price so I'm thinking it really works out cheaper in the long run and No-One will tell me different.

I once did some research into lightning and camping. Only read further if you want to be scared of storms when camping.

Conclusions were:
Tent poles don't constitute a faraday cage.
Fibreglass can conduct electricity.
Air mattresses will not insulate you.
Lightning can flash across the ground so if a nearby tree gets struck you are at risk.

Safest place: car.

I shan't link to news stories of incidents and I will say that it is very rare for me to get us out of our tent in a thunderstorm. I just wibble slightly inside.

Slubberdegullion · 21/05/2014 20:52

Shock badkitten. I had you down for a straight into the faraday cage kind of woman.

I dragged the entire family out of the tent in German a few years back. The Dutch sat under their de waard variolufiels and looked at us bemusedly. No one was stuck by lightning but I felt smug that I was the only person on the campsite deploying physics against nature.

Plassey is lovely btw headless

SummerSazz · 21/05/2014 20:56

I keep about one weekend a month free in the summer as potential 'camping weekends' and we head off if nice and stay at home if not. Never had any problems booking.

This weekend was free but given the forecast I have relented and let dd1 accept a late party invite.

Cereal0ffender · 21/05/2014 21:02

Hi slubs what hot and forrin plans do you have?

Slubberdegullion · 21/05/2014 21:03

Er North Wales

Slubberdegullion · 21/05/2014 21:05

And yourself?

Just as well we have no foreign holiday booked as my dh's car has just cost us three thousand of your cunting English pounds, fucks sake.
Just as well we're in a field on the Lleyn tbh

Cereal0ffender · 21/05/2014 21:09

Oh dear! I am sure wales will be glorious. Fortunately we booked our boat to France before we had to rip out our new bathroom and almost literally piss several thousand of your cunting english pounds up the wall. Heho, the wine will be cheap and will flow.

Slubberdegullion · 21/05/2014 21:13

Ou est dans La France?

The weather is sometimes glorious in N Wales but this year I have EHU so it can piss down on me all it likes and I will give it the finger with my electricity and fan heater.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/05/2014 21:55

Slubber sometimes I like to live dangerously Wink

Slubberdegullion · 22/05/2014 07:29

When camping if I want to live dangerously I sometimes don't re-tension the guys before retiring for the evening.

I like my lightning from the safety of the cage.

VivaLeBeaver · 22/05/2014 07:43

This is why I've admitted defeat and bought a caravan.

I think the picture for Sunday and Monday isn't too bad :) some showers about, more so Sunday but some in the south may get away with a dry day. Pleasant temps too.

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 22/05/2014 08:13

Camping in Wiltshire at the weekend. I haven't looked at the weather forecast yet because you know... Yolo.

However dh's estate car has broken so it looks like we will be shoving the bell tent in the back of my mini and doing extreme minimalist camping.

shirazplease · 22/05/2014 08:21

Saturday looking like the worst day. We'll be in Wiltshire too Grin

I hate the fact that camping got popular and that every bugger and his dog wants to come to the south west. Used to be able to wait until weather was good and just turn up, now I have to f*ing book even our most remote/basic sites and inevitably if we book, then that is the weekend it pours with rain Angry

MummyPigsFatTummy · 22/05/2014 14:54

Eek! There is thunder and lightning at London Bridge outside my window. We will have no car near us at the festival. What is the safest type of tent in storms does anyone know? We have a steel poled tunnel, a fibreglass poled pop up and a steel (I think) poled bell tent.

Please help!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/05/2014 14:59

the kind of tent won't really make any difference I'm afraid, however, usually people are fine. I would stay away from the big structures around (especially any stages!)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/05/2014 15:01

(I was once part of a large crowd that was evacuated off an airfield during an airshow. It was a very electrically active storm and there were a lot of c-g strikes. We all bustled into the nearest marquee. It got very wild and my best consolation was that if we got struck we would make headlines due to the large number of people that would be got in one go!)

MummyPigsFatTummy · 22/05/2014 15:24

Thanks OYBBK - how terrifying!

Bit worried about your advice to avoid stages - my brother's band are playing on stage tomorrow night - fingers crossed they make it through unscathed!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/05/2014 15:28

Tomorrow looks much calmer :)
