OK, it's our family holiday and YET AGAIN the weather is looking suspect at best. I have a bit of a cold and am knackered from work / children. We'll still go (I think) because there's no guarantee that the weather will be any better for our next holiday in August.
We have a decent sized tent and ehu. The campsite is posh, so plenty to do on site.
Still I can't stop thinking about the cold and the damp and early nights inside the tent followed by early mornings inside the tent.
So you positive upbeat campers give me reasons to be cheerful. I have three DC (10 and under) and the only plus is there will be no need for sun lotion.

We are supposed to be going today, only for the weekend and only an hour away.

Checked the weather forecast and we have a weather warning for force 8 or 9 gales in place for this afternoon and all night! It's also still very cold.

Kids begging to go today but I'm putting off until tomorrow when the forecast looks much better.

So annoying as we usually camp during the first bank holiday in May but decided after last year's cold and rainy bank holiday that we would just do the late May one. So of course the early May one was gorgeous and warm! Typical.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 24/05/2013 08:39

We bailed outBlush

Mostly because DH is unwell but the cold didn't thrill me either!

We have booked a fancy static caravan instead, swimming pool and restaurant on site and everything

PiHigh · 24/05/2013 09:35

We're going at the end of the week. Hoping the weather improves. However we went last year when it was horrendously wet and had a great time. We were with friends and they all came into our tent as it was the only one big enough for us all to sit in so it was rather sociable.

Just remember, take wine and beer Grin

hillbilly · 24/05/2013 09:58

We are going next Thursday and so far it's not looking great. Will decide nearer the time whether to bail or not :-(

Blu · 24/05/2013 11:51

Remember that the forecast for last weekend was diabolical - rain all day Saturday - and some people cancelled camping as a result. Then it turned out lovely - sunny and warm during the day.

Yesterday in London it was sunny and bright over my office - for about an hour - and at the exact same moment a hail storm was creating a white layer on the head of my friend a 15 mon walk away.

Mad, mad, mad - but it may not, in the end, be bad.

Picturepuncture · 24/05/2013 11:59

It's windy, wet and freezing here. I'm camping for four nights from tomorrow. My waterproofs are good and I've packed the wine Grin

EasilyDistracted77 · 24/05/2013 12:27

We too are going camping - I have just checked the weather forecast and it's looking better for the weekend, at least in Staffordshire area!

It will be our first time doing family camping and youngest DC is 16 months and I'm most worried about her getting cold in the night. She'll be sleeping in a travel cot in her usual baby sleeping bag; besides putting her in lots of layers, anyone got any tips for helping to keep the cold at bay? I fear a disturbed nights sleep or two may be forthcoming ..

DewDr0p · 24/05/2013 12:49

Weather looks much better for sat/sun OP.

Good tip is to store your clothes in the boot of the car if it's wet. Stops them getting so cold and damp. I've been known to take an airer too, made a big diff being able to hang the wet stuff up!

SlubberInAWinkleWagon · 24/05/2013 13:02

I've just cancelled our week away. 50% of us are full of bastard cold, I have a big exam a week on Tuesday and I simply cannot summon up any enthusiasm for packing, driving, pitching and then either sitting in a cold tent or distributing £20 notes right, left and centre all over N Yorkshire in a feeble effort to have a lovely jolly time.

The British weather has killed my camping mojo. I can't be arsed anymore, not for anything longer than one or two nights anyway.

Sorry OP. not helpful to your predicament.

I am however still VERY enthusiastic about camping in hot Forrin. [also unhelpful]

Blu · 24/05/2013 13:45

I'm off to the Lakes for a week.

In a cottage.

Quenelle · 24/05/2013 14:01

I agree entirely about the British weather. I feel quite depressed that this Summer is going to be another no-show like last year and can work up absolutely no enthusiasm for camping here.

I may have a change of heart when DS is old enough to go off and play in the rain with other children whilst I put my feet up in the tent with my Kindle and a blanket over my knees.

hillbilly · 24/05/2013 14:21

The end of next week has been showing wet, wet wet for where we are going but I have just checked now and hallelujah, it looks dry. Of course I'm fully aware that it can change but I'm hopeful. Anyway, 1st night is with a girlfriend and all kids - no DHs until the following day, and I don't care about pitching in the rain Grin

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 24/05/2013 14:26

We're off later - well me and the dc are silly DH booked a business trip forgetting that we had booked to go away so we're going without him!

The forecast for south west Wales looks ok until Monday when it is supposed to be very wet. At the moment in south east Wales it's very windy so I'm hoping that Monday's wetness might get blown off course .

All waterproofs are packed and Tesco will be delivering wine later!

hz · 24/05/2013 14:45

I reckon it looks worse than it wil be. We are off tonight to Exmoor, it looks like tonight will be chilly but tomorrow bright sunshine all day - not expecting it to be hot but certainly warmer than it has been here (Bath) for the last two days.

If I say it with enough confidence it might come true.

YoungJoseph · 24/05/2013 20:40

We're making a decision on Monday now (day we're due to go anyway). Can still bail but we'll all be disappointed and then we'll have to come up with some sort of compensation package for the DCs.
Got a tent to go away more often not less.

MegBusset · 24/05/2013 20:44

We're going next Friday, just locally for two nights. Unless it looks like pissing down all weekend, in which case we'll stay at home!

millimat · 24/05/2013 20:47

We're off tomorrow for 4 nights, but luckily are in a caravan. Even with that, I'm totally fed up with the British weather. I NEED the sun!

FourArms · 24/05/2013 21:54

Off tomorrow morning - hopefully nice and early! To Norfolk where the weather looks OKish until pack up day, we may come back a day early!

MegBusset · 24/05/2013 22:09

Which site are you going to, FourArms?

AngelsWithSilverWings · 24/05/2013 22:46

Well we decide last minute that we would pitch up tonight after all as the weather forecast improved and the gale warnings disappeared.

Arrived during the only rain free 2 hours of today and got tent up and dinner cooked before the heavens opened.

Kids now asleep and we are enjoying a glass of red and chilling out to some 90's indie tunes.

Should wake up to sunshine tomorrow.

hettie · 25/05/2013 07:23

Come on naysayers....look outside its sunny! (well here in the south west). Off to longthorns farm in Dorset. Hope some you have made it out or there will be no on for the DC to play with and we'll have to entertain them ourselves

AngelsWithSilverWings · 25/05/2013 09:35

Just cooked the pancakes , bacon and eggs and enjoyed them in the sunshine. So glad we changed our minds about not coming yesterday!

Was bloody cold last night though!

mamaduckbone · 25/05/2013 22:04

To the poster asking about keeping a lo warm...last time we went camping ds2 was 2 and in a baby sleeping bag in his travel cot. The weather got steadily colder and he ended up in a sweatshirt over his pjs, lambskin fleece underneath, and my north face gilet over him as a duvet one night! And a hat I think. This was in August! We're -meant- -to- be going to Norfolk on Monday...kit is out, wine is bought. It's going to be freezing though.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/05/2013 23:14

We are going Tuesday :) not too worried about the weather. I have hot water bottles and books. Going to pre-prepare food so it's easy to heat up and spend one night in the pub.

YoungJoseph · 26/05/2013 07:28

Well if you're not too worried OYBBK then neither am I (also just checked BBC weather and the forecast has improved to light rain and white cloud-better than our other camping attempts).
