OK, it's our family holiday and YET AGAIN the weather is looking suspect at best. I have a bit of a cold and am knackered from work / children. We'll still go (I think) because there's no guarantee that the weather will be any better for our next holiday in August.
We have a decent sized tent and ehu. The campsite is posh, so plenty to do on site.
Still I can't stop thinking about the cold and the damp and early nights inside the tent followed by early mornings inside the tent.
So you positive upbeat campers give me reasons to be cheerful. I have three DC (10 and under) and the only plus is there will be no need for sun lotion.

It does look an awful lot better than it did. Some showers perhaps sometimes heavy, and cool at times but overall it just looks like a normal spring week.

coco4242 · 26/05/2013 16:26

I have been reading the old camping threads (to steal good ideas) and its such a shame that people like Slubber and Blu, who were once so enthusiastic about camping have been put off the rubbish british weather.

Wonder if that happens to everyone eventually.

Just arrived home after our long weekend camping trip on Mersea Island in Essex and I've got to say it was one of the best we've ever had!

The sun was shining and although the breeze was a bit chilly at times we were outside all weekend. Cold at night but fine once we put the thermals on.

The kids loved every second and we really relaxed. Just wish we could have stayed for the whole week.

Got another weekend trip booked in two weeks. Keeping fingers crossed for good weather.

Cor!

The nights were cold (frost on Saturday night!) and it was one of the wettest packing ups that we've ever done (and that's saying something!), but we had 2 sunny days and a great time.

Not sure when we'll be going again yet...

AngelsWithSilverWings · 27/05/2013 19:06

We had frost last year camping in Suffolk during the jubilee weekend. It rained all weekend too. Great memories of the day time fun but the cold nights ,with no hook up were a nightmare. Kept waking up worried about the kids freezing to death.

Nearly melted my welly's sitting too close to the campfire.

MegBusset · 28/05/2013 11:15

Keeping an eye on the forecast for the weekend - Friday looks cool but dry so far.

hillbilly · 28/05/2013 11:19

Weatherwatch here too Meg - Thurs a bit iffy - I'll probably be pitching in the rain :-(

musu · 28/05/2013 23:42

We went today. It rained all the way to the campsite, 2.5 hour drive. At the campsite it was raining even more heavily. We pitched the tent then looked at the forecast and ended up coming home. We thought at least we would be warm and dry but got home to discover the boiler has stopped working so we are dry but no heating or hot water.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 29/05/2013 09:15

Oh no musu. What a disaster. Hope your heating is easily fixed.

musu · 29/05/2013 12:10

BG engineer turned up this morning (miracles do happen) and couldn't find anything wrong with it. Aaargh. He reckons it must have been rain getting in the flue. It's never happened before but it makes me realise its days are numbered (it is a very old boiler).

It has hardly stopped raining so I think we made the right decision to come home. Didn't stop ds being in floods of tears last night though as he had been so looking forward to going. I said we could put the tent up in the garden but not in this weather Sad

Otherworld · 29/05/2013 20:44

We are away bravely camping in Dorset in the rain.

MegBusset · 30/05/2013 16:44

Looking good this weekend in Norfolk

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 31/05/2013 16:00

Have a fab time all - wish we were gong this weekend but we've got family coming to stay.

Otherworld · 31/05/2013 16:45

Weather is better now after a soggy few days!

Quenelle · 31/05/2013 17:03

It's looking quite good for the weekend. Have fun everyone.

Hope you're having a good time in Dorset Otherworld. You deserve a few days of sunshine after sticking it out in the rain!

MegBusset · 31/05/2013 22:46

I'm MNing from my sleeping bag :)

Been glorious today. Sunshine all day, kids running round, been in the outdoor pool, had ice cream, wine, BBQ, more wine. Fingers crossed for more of the same tomorrow!

mirrorpants · 31/05/2013 23:30

^^ love that! where are you?

lostinteaching47 · 01/06/2013 08:56

We got back from Housedean Farm near Lewes yesterday.Would highly recommend it.It did rain quite a bit but saying that we did manage to light a fire and keep it going every day and into the night.Spent 3 nights away.We have a campervan and an awning. It was so peaceful, wasn't fully booked and there was plenty of room between pitches. We were right on top of the South Downs but didn't get to do much walking because of the rain.No EHU but all was great, showers and very clean toilets (luxury LOL)

Might be going to Jimmy's farm next Friday for the weekend as we like to do the VW weekends that are not too far away(we are in Essex) I'm a teacher so can never get Fridays off which is a bind so tend to go down after school on the Friday on the train which does tend to add a lot to what is normally a reasonably priced weekend.

Found this forum by accident and it's fast becoming my favourite .Can I join you all?

FourArms · 01/06/2013 21:56

"Which site are you going to, FourArms?"

We went to Kelling Heath. It was lovely. Where are you staying? Hope the sun stays out!

YoungJoseph · 02/06/2013 07:49

Update-glad we went. Only one wet day, but it was cold most of the time. DCs had a great time and the site was fab (booked for next year). Would love, love, love a sunny camping holiday, maybe next time. Really didn't want to cancel the holiday in case we got another bad summer and had to cancel our August trip as well. Another upside of less than perfect weather is that the local attraction we went to wasn't busy so no queues for any of it.

Ah I love Kelling Heath. We're at Clippesby Hall - smaller than KH (no statics) and a more chilled/quieter vibe, although facilities not quite as good. It was cool yesterday but dry, so we went to Yarmouth to relive DH's childhood with the tacky seaside experience; the sun finally came out about 6pm.

We haven't got anything else booked in the UK this year - we'll just follow the weather. Luckily we live in Norfolk so have a wide choice nearby for last-minute trips.

Quenelle · 02/06/2013 10:58

We liked Kelling Heath too. DS loved getting the train to Sheringham when we stayed last year. Might try again on August if the weathers OK.

Hi lostinteaching. Glad you're having a good time.

hillbilly · 03/06/2013 20:21

We had a great weekend at Forgewood. Arrived to drizzle on Thursday but woke up to glorious weather Friday which stayed for the whole weekend. The site was VERY muddy though due to rain on Tues and Weds which had not drained well into the dry earth, hence a bit of a quagmire and very muddy kids! All in all an excellent and chilled break.
