The DC (and mine & DH's marriage) survived the drive from Cornwall to Norfolk this summer so we are going to be brave and book for France next year :) Would love campsite recommendations that:

  • Have Canvas maxi tents or Eurocamp/other equipment
  • Within 6/7hrs' drive from Calais
  • Near sandy beach and near nice small town/village for market, shops etc
  • Good kids' pool and play areas, shop, pizzeria etc onsite, and kids' entertainment
  • South enough for guaranteed sun would be nice but not the be and end all!

We stayedhere a couple of years ago.Twas very nice.

The vendee is an amazing area.. Huge sandy beaches, pine woods, excellent campsites, good weather not too bad a drive. Ones I stayed at we're le bois Masson and les Clarys plage, and a couple of others names which I have forgot. Clarys plage was better.

MegBusset · 13/08/2012 20:53

Thanks, I have been looking at the Vendee but thought it might be too far a drive - we used to go every year when I was a kid and always broke up the journey across France overnight - as we have to get from Norfolk to Kent before we even get the ferry it would effectively make it three days' journey.

Camping Interlude on the ile de re. Canvas & Eurocamp have tents there. It is fab.

MegBusset · 13/08/2012 20:56

Issyocean that site looks nice but ideally we'd go somewhere with kids' clubs and/or onsite evening entertainment.

Looks amazing Chocolate but again I think too far.

My parents live near Dover so our plan would be to drive to theirs (4hrs from where we live), stop over and then catch an early morning ferry and get to our site within 6/7 hours' drive. thus avoiding a second overnight stop.

its 6-7 hours by autoroute.

VillaEphrussi · 13/08/2012 21:53

We've been here and like it, and doing the same journey as yours www.canvasholidays.co.uk/campsite-overview.aspx?gclid=CJbKuYO95bECFZQZtAod5CUAXQ&id=PP01X. It's meant to be expanding to include a bowling alley over the road next year, so might get a bit packed, and it is largely populated by English people, but it's perfect for what we need (i.e. change of scene, bit of France, very good swimming pools, clean, and driveable in a day). Took crossing at 10.15 (left home at 6), arrived at site by mid afternoon. It took us 2 and a half hours from Calais on autoroute.

VillaEphrussi · 13/08/2012 21:54

Not sure if that link worked - here's the proper website

kazkiss · 13/08/2012 22:03

Seqoiua parc . Marennes with canvas . Gorgeous site with brilliant pool complex.

VillaEphrussi · 13/08/2012 22:23

Sorry just seen the sandy beach criterion. La Croix du Vieux Pont has a lake beach but not near a proper beach. Was 35 degrees when we were there in heat wave but not as reliable as Vendée or south of course. Has everything else on list though!

MegBusset · 13/08/2012 22:45

I have been looking at Domaine De Drancourt in Picardy, a very easy drive from Calais and near lots of beaches! Anyone been?

OP posts:
MegBusset · 13/08/2012 23:13

Villa is that site convenient for Disneyland? Thinking that we could maybe do a few days there to do Disneyland (which the DC would love) then head up to Drancourt...

VillaEphrussi · 14/08/2012 09:33

Yes we went from there and I think it was an hour and a half's drive on autoroute, but they also have a daily coach trip from the site. Haven't been to Drancourt.

We also went to Houlgate in Normandy a few years ago which was sweet and next to a lovely, flowery seaside town?!

dreamingofsun · 14/08/2012 15:05

la garageioure is one of best sites we've been to (and we've seen a lot). wasn't that struck with vendee though

dreamingofsun · 14/08/2012 15:05

garongeoire maybe

MrsMc82 · 14/08/2012 18:53

en.camping-plage.net/ we had brilliant time here...... can book via euro camp or direct with the site....... we had a Tithome booked direct with the site and loved it, highly recommended........ our pitch was just 100 paces from the beach (yep i counted them!) and site ticks all your criteria apart from maybe the south-ness.....

tim6587 · 14/08/2012 18:59

Chateau Des Ormes has some wonderful onsite activities or Les Mouettes. Both are very good sites and would recommend them wholeheartedly.

ineedamiracle · 14/08/2012 19:09

Le Clarys Plage was mentioned above - we got back yesterday from there! It's fantastic - 3rd year running and planning to go back next year. We got off the Eurotunnel at 8am French time and arrived at 3pm - plenty of time to have a good few hours in the pool to relax Smile
We set off home at 8am and arrived at Calais at 2:30pm as the traffic was much better.
It's really worth looking at as it is truly beautiful in the Vendee region!

Less · 14/08/2012 19:21

We did Canvas holidays when I was I child and I loved them.....apart from queuing for frankly manky toilets and showers. Is it still like that?

sleeze · 14/08/2012 19:23

Either Camping de la Baie or Camping de la Plage in La Trinite sur Mer, South Brittany. Cannot recommend highly enough.

dreamingofsun · 14/08/2012 19:47

can second chateau des ormes and south brittany recommendations. the former is especially good if your kids like football

astridforty · 14/08/2012 19:50

Just come back from La Tranche sur Mer euro camp site. Fabulous holiday and we've booked to go back next summer.

2 mins walk from beach and short drive to La Rochelle.

Took just over 6 hours from Calais.

MegBusset · 14/08/2012 22:34

Thanks all, I think we have decided to do a week at La Croix du Vieux Pont and do Disneyland, then a week at Domaine de Drancourt for beaches/seaside pottering. I have very fond memories of the Vendee (we used to go to Domaine de la Foret which stopped being a Canvas site but now seems to be back in their brochure) and would definitely go in the future assuming the first trip across the Channel is a success :)
