The DC (and mine & DH's marriage) survived the drive from Cornwall to Norfolk this summer so we are going to be brave and book for France next year :) Would love campsite recommendations that:

  • Have Canvas maxi tents or Eurocamp/other equipment
  • Within 6/7hrs' drive from Calais
  • Near sandy beach and near nice small town/village for market, shops etc
  • Good kids' pool and play areas, shop, pizzeria etc onsite, and kids' entertainment
  • South enough for guaranteed sun would be nice but not the be and end all!

we did 2 weeks here here

amazing for DCs and convenient for Disneyland, we had a last minute deal and paid £300 for 12 days in may in a luxury caravan with Thomson Al Fresco, pool a little cold, take wetsuits if they are younger, also you can buy tokens to do things, which work out a lot cheaper, the castle there is absolutely amazing, we went there twice, castle

Also have you considered this place - duinrell duinrell but its just outside amsterdam, we did this in may as well for £75 in tescos vouchers, had to pay £3.50 in euros each to use pool, again great for DCs

cross posts, my link was for La Croix, it may be worth ringing Thompson and giving them your budget if it is last minute, thats what we did and they came in within £20 of it.

We had a great time. We were in a caravan by the lake which was great because we could watch DCs playing on sand by artificial lake while drinking lots of wine relaxing

Ah we've been looking at Duinrell. What's it like, bf? Any good for a 3 and a 1 year old?

That sounds great Meg. Would be interested to hear what Drancourt was like afterwards Smile

Id say so yes, in fact I would say the younger the better, don't go there expecting a theme park of the standard of the UK ones, it is free after all.

The water park is lovely, I took 2 piece wetsuits for the DCs (£10 on ebay) as my youngest is tiny and really feels the cold, the older mostly just wore swimsuits. We went there 3 times in the course of a week.

There is a big play area that is open in the evenings, and a mini disco once or twice a week, but there isnt a lot to do in the night unless you want to pay hugely over inflated beer prices, that said we never went into the town in the evenings, so I dont know what it is like there.

There are loads of small rides for the DCs, mine happily spent all day there 4/5 days out of 7.

There is a small farm park close by and a huge beach, we also went into Amsterdam for the day, but I wouldnt bother going back to Amsterdam with small children, it was absolutely rammed and my friend who lives there all the time says its constantly like that.

I think Duinrell is really good value for money tbh, especially if you pay with Tescos vouchers like we did, pizzas from the take away are nice as well.

Vendee is totally doable in 6-7 hours from Calais.

Oh, and it's worthy having a look at the campsite you're interested in online and booking direct - we did that this year and it was loads cheaper than Canvas/Eurocamp.
