lol at foam mats, that's what we had, i remember by dad going bananas when we would pick an eggbox of them...
part of the reason i want the under-£20 sim is that the sleeping area of the tent i have is not generous for space, so i reckon that i can fill the entire floorspace with four of them pretty much. currently dd sleeps on a blowup mattress, one of those sleepover disney princess, while dh and i sleep on a double airbed with dd2. however, even last year this translated as dd2 pushing me into the foot of clear space on the ground, so now that she is older we need to Take Steps.

AitchTwoOh · 21/02/2011 10:31

an eggbox shaped foam bit off them, i mean. that of made it v random.

SlubberdeVelcro · 21/02/2011 12:41

Thank you for clarification Aitch, I was wondering if 'an egg box of them' was some Scottish phrase and DB would be nodding knowingly at your post.

Sorry haven't made camping shop yet due to small falling in river incident, have had to come home, re-group and change clothes but will head out again shortly.

SEE that is what comes on sleeping on roll mats as a child. Mild adversity will not deter me from my fact seeking mission.

SlubberdeVelcro · 21/02/2011 12:42

And lol @ DB's dd's special rock.

Now that is proper camping.

MollieO · 21/02/2011 14:28

Aitch we've got those. I got them as part of my cheap first time camping if I hate it it won't have cost too much kit. Whilst I have upgraded most of my stuff I've stuck with these mats. They fold up very small and are comfortable. The only addition I made on my upgrade was fleece blankets to go between them and my sleeping bag to stop me slipping off the mat in the middle of the night.

Lovecat · 21/02/2011 14:43

In girl guides we managed to pitch our tent over a tree stump and muggins ended up sleeping on it all night, didn't realise why I was so uncomfortable til we struck the tent...

Mind you, we didn't have anything but sleeping bags and a canvas groundsheet between us and the cold, cold damp and cowpatty grass of a Merseyside field....

I keep seeing SIMs in Tesco for £15 - would they actually be worth it for that price? (DD has an inflatable Tinkerbell ready bed but won't stay in it...)

ScramVonChubby · 21/02/2011 14:46

We had a tent (Khyam tunnel) pegged with deltas that actually survived what teh radio referred to as 'tornadic activity'.. Mind it was scary though! (Cornish coast). Our cadac style grill took off at one point!

We've a beautiful soul pad sat in the hall and it's been there since September waiting for use. Roll on spring!

thisisyesterday · 21/02/2011 15:13

i've just bought one of these for ds1, and 2 of these for ds2 and ds3

SlubberdeVelcro · 21/02/2011 15:41

Oh my goodness yesterday. I was only lying on THE VERY SAME sims in Casey's but a few hours ago.
[spooky]

The dds and I did a comprehensive lying down test of
The Outwell 3cm (green), The Outwell 2.5cm anti slip backing (black) and the Vango.

Both the dds preferred the black one which is a bit bonkers as it it the thinnest but oh my it rolls up beautifully small with a compression strap too. My arse and I preferred the Vango but it looked a big old cumbersome bugger next to the natty little black Outwell.

The exercise also proved educational as whilst lying on the mats for 'a lady in Mummy's computer called Aitch', I was able to reinforce to correct usage of Aitch rather than Haitch.

I bought a lovely table and stools too.

SlubberdeVelcro · 21/02/2011 15:43

Lovecat I would always go for an Outwell sim over a Tesco one.

Lying on a tree stump is all part of the Guiding experience you know!

CaptainNancy · 21/02/2011 17:17

They were selling off thermarests at the end of summer last year for 13 in blacks (short version) so I snapped up 3- 1 to replace my foam mat, and 1 each for the children. They've been fantastic so far (2 camping trips and numerous living room camps...)

AitchTwoOh · 21/02/2011 20:25

6.95 postage is a LOT on that site. Shock
i was piddling around with sims in Cotswold Co today, seemed like a 2.5 would be fine but it was £27.99, so i was quietly thinking ohoho i will order from the 'zon. but am noo interested in the non-slip outwell, thanks to slub's dds. we want to stuff them into crevices in car etc so smaller the better imo.

AitchTwoOh · 21/02/2011 20:26

oh btw i have snapped up BEEYOOTIFUL knives in tkmaxx, great for camping. will find and link.

AitchTwoOh · 21/02/2011 20:29

these kinda fellas... they have their own SHEATH

a tenner for three.

thisisyesterday · 21/02/2011 20:31

yeah the postage was high, but it still worked out the cheapest for the 3 things I needed. £22.99 for the 5cm SIM was a bargain

AitchTwoOh · 21/02/2011 20:31

oh bums. only 3 of the black ones left. if one of ye beetches has just bought one on slub's reco, speak now.

AitchTwoOh · 21/02/2011 20:31

v true, tiy.

thisisyesterday · 21/02/2011 20:32

i like the knives!

i do need decent camping cutlery actually...

MisSalLaneous · 21/02/2011 20:36

Ooh, lovely knives, Aitch! Might do a tkmaxx detour on the way home tomorrow. I never use it, have a gazillion other gadgets (and the plain piping bag that works the best anyway), but would love those cupcake decorating thingies on that link. Going on my birthday gift list. Jewellery are for floozies.

AitchTwoOh · 21/02/2011 20:38

they are really pretty, aren't they? and frankly sharper than anything i have in my propah kitchen. tk maxx best price at the mo.

hey listen, can i ask you a favour? you know i run this blw site, well i have an amazon link for the site that gives an astonishing (imo) 5% kickback to the site running costs etc for anyone shopping with the 'zon. the site is here. it's just www.babyledweaning.com as some of you may know. i've only just started doing it but money has already started to trickle in, which is a bloody relief actually as it's been costing a fortune recently to run. but anyway, if you happen to be ordering and you happen to remember, that would be fab. but the knives are cheaper in the maxx, so don't get them. Grin

Slubber · 21/02/2011 20:43

Oooooh I have a pink one of those knives.

V sharp. Cut well. Good bargain

Aitch I was able to do a bit of wheeler dealering in Cotswold Company. This is so unlike me as I'm such barter scardey cat but they gave me some really good techy advice about my sleeping bags. I could have bought them cheaper on the net but they offer a good returns/repair facility so I went in and BRAVELY said to the two (two!) outdoorsy gents "what can you do for me? I want to spend my money here "

And we negotiated a v good deal.

You can but ask.

MisSalLaneous · 21/02/2011 20:44

Oh of course, no problem at all, would love to help, even if only a couple of pennies. Stupid question - does it work for specific things only, or anything bought after clicking on your link and then going to Amazon? I buy books relatively regularly, other things as and when.

AitchTwoOh · 21/02/2011 20:51

do you know, i did slightly get the feeling that they might do that, slub, and the advice was so helpful HOWEVER in his enthusiasm for demonstrating a folding cup ('the army use these now') a droplet of saliva actually FELL SPLOOSH into the cup as he folded and then HANDED IT TO ME so i had to leave immediately.

the amazing thing with the 'zon is that anything you buy at all goes on the site's ticket. tbh i wish i had known all this years ago. it doesn't work for me though so am on the lookout for worthy site to pass my shekels onto. don't see why i should effectively pay 5% more if i can pass it onto someone else, iykwim?
