My friends came up to visit me today and surprised me by buying me a Cobb. They knew I wanted one but am really skint right now and so bought me one. I am so happy and can't wait to try it and just wanted to tell some people who actually no what one is Grin

Slubber, aren't you going to make a cake in your Cobb? Mmm, a lovely cake with purple icing..... Grin

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 21/02/2011 16:01

cake definitely, there's a recipe in the book that comes with it.

I should think steamed pud would be possible - perhaps Slubber could do her Sussex Pond Pudding as a back-up in case the meringues don't come off Grin

DeOilyCart · 21/02/2011 16:04

In that case, if you are accepting newcomers into your competition, I will make a 5 tier wedding cake on my first camping trip.

And a Baked Alaska in case it doesn't come off.

SlubberdeVelcro · 21/02/2011 16:52

Hahaha

That's the spirit DeOily. Tiered wedding cake sounds awesome and totally achievable.

I'm going to attempt meringues with only a fork for a whisk, and on site too for bonus points

DeOilyCart · 21/02/2011 17:22

I may have to use ready-roll icing if that's not cheating too much, and surely you pack a compact balloon whisk when camping? They should make a Leatherman tool or Swiss Army Knife for Cobb cooking, with whisk, spatula and mini baby bundt tin.

I am saving up for a Cobb. Should have one by the end of May.

SlubberdeVelcro · 21/02/2011 17:46

hahahaha @ compact balloon whisk

SlubberdeVelcro · 21/02/2011 17:48

well bugger me

DuplicitousBitch · 21/02/2011 17:49

we have a camping whisk

DeOilyCart · 21/02/2011 18:07

Grin at compact whisk existing!

I had in mind something collapsible, with prongs that stretch out flat and can be pinged into a balloon shape.

DB what is your camping whisk like?

Most of my camping utensils are exactly the same as my kitchen utensils.

Because they are my kitchen utensils.

SlubberdeVelcro · 21/02/2011 18:09

Yeah but you have a VAN to put it in don,t you, I bet you even have a special little drawer of cooking equipment, or maybe even a peg with the outline of the whisk drawn around it so you know exactly where it goes?

I think the should be some sort of, God, what is the scoring system in Golf, handicapping, yes, if you plan to enter to Cobb Off with numerous cooking ecutraments (is that how you spell it? iPad is not helping)

Extra points for doing complex things with a teaspoon

DeOilyCart · 21/02/2011 18:11

There is a market for this stuff. A potato masher that folds flat, a camping ladle, like on of those squashy self-supporting camping washing up bowls (I daren't use one of those, it would give up on it's self-supporting nature and become dependent at the wrong moment), an inflatable rolling pin, a fold flat cheese grater (no - the Microplane has already been invented)...

SlubberdeVelcro · 21/02/2011 18:32

oooh I love all the little pack flat able, fold down able camping gadgets you get in shops for climbers and the like, you know with a wall display of those metal jobbers for hooking into ropes.

The fusion of the spoon and fork (spork) and spoon and something else (splade) filled me with pleasure.

This washing up bowls though do look Danger! Danger!

DuplicitousBitch · 21/02/2011 19:32

whisk predates van

Grumpla · 21/02/2011 19:35

Oh for goodness sake I had managed to completely forget how much I wanted a Cobb over the winter and now you are all reminding me again! Argh!

BlueCollie · 21/02/2011 19:46

I have been happily showing off my Cobb all day to some friends that came round. They are very impressed and have already decided that we must get a chicken and throw it on when the weather is nice and we are out with DC. My DS who is 15 months was reading the cook book (well looking lol) and kept trying to eat the pictures of the food so I think he is rather impressed too.
I'm really not going to last until the old man gets home Grin
I have two boxes of cooking stuff...take everything I can as do like to see what meals we can cook on a stove. Now I have my Cobb it'll be even better.

I'm sorry but I still think whisks should be made using nature's bounty.
just take your Cobb and your trusty scout knife and you can whittle whatever else you need.

MisSalLaneous · 21/02/2011 20:39

Talking of camping gadgetry, has anyone seen those fork type things that you're supposed to use to grill marshmallows with over the fire? Baffles me - can't you just use a fork or stick on something similar? Have been coping fine for the last 30 odd years, and either I've got the world's best immune system or it's unlikely to kill you to use the unofficial Marshmallow Grilling Equipment.

AitchTwoOh · 21/02/2011 20:44

talking of camping gadgetry... did you SEE how much it would cost to get a dutch oven tripod and bloody lid lifting equipment? you're talking near enough a ton and that's just the basics.

AitchTwoOh · 21/02/2011 20:45

eh? eh? missal, what was that you were saying about sticks?

MisSalLaneous · 21/02/2011 20:58

I give you... The Mallow Lance. Or you can use a stick. Some marketer is sitting at home amazed that his practical joke was taken seriously.

Ah, and Dutch Oven. Yup, they're heavy as hell. I think you'd need to either park right next to your tent or have a trolley to get everything to pitch. Or sucker dh into carrying it and use earplugs.

PoledrathePissedOffFairy · 21/02/2011 21:21

FFS! 'a right of passage'!

It s rite of passage you morons. get a fucking proofreader. Who can spell.
