Baby 'expert' advice on BF

koeda · 24/06/2010 19:30

My SIL sent me this lady's book from Australia. Apparently she's quite popular there. I did a bit of research and found this recent TV interview - unbelievable! I hope she doesn't have hopes on cracking the UK market - though maybe she does as she was doing the interview in Ireland.

The link goes through to another popular parent forum where the actual video is linked in the first post - I hope MN don't mind!

Doh! Here's the link:

Bloody hell Am tempted to take a leaf from some of the posters on babycentre and write a letter of complaint. Some of her advice is worrying...

Not feeding your baby for three hours as a NEWBORN?!

And "unmade milk"?!

koeda · 24/06/2010 20:10

I like the apparent research she did with dairy farmers bit....

I know its from April, but I'm writing an email of complaint because I'm feeling bitchy I'm concerned about what has been said.

koeda · 24/06/2010 20:25

You should hear her advice on sleeping temperatures for babies - my poor MIL is so worried about her newborn grandson - I've posted in Sleep so won't go into it again here but needless to say it's against current SIDS advice...

If she does make moves on the UK market I'd like to think we're too well read nowadays to take on advice like that.

Have you seen the follow-up?

yankbabymum · 24/06/2010 20:32

what a frightening load of crap. That's scary that she's allowed to speak on TV calling herself a "Baby Expert"

koeda · 24/06/2010 20:46

Oh god the follow up is awful... She should have been properly pulled up on the crazy things she was/is spouting. But then the TV show wouldn't have a TV show anymore (given that she seems to be running a series of chats with them) if they had people on who told her straight up that she was talking out of her a*se.

It makes me so sad that people actually do believe she is someone to be believed/trusted when it comes to the care of their little tiny ones . She just wants their money . Please don't let her sell her books over here...

What a load of nonsense!! Unmade milk? Foremilk/hindmilk not an issue because of what some dairy farmers told her? Bonkers!

I'm reading Dream Babies - a history of childcare advice - and she sounds dangerously like quacks like Truby King in the 20s. Totally horrified by this rubbish. I guess sleep deprivation drives parents into the arms of so called experts like her...

mistressploppy · 24/06/2010 20:56

I hope she gets discredited quickly and very publicly

kveta · 24/06/2010 21:09

bloody hell, what a muppet! where did she learn this quackery?!

feeding a lot before your milk comes in damages your breasts? WTF??

I was just whilst watching that shite!

jaggythistle · 24/06/2010 22:49

It made me feel kind of sick After only about 3 minutes.

Where do these nutters spring from ???

jaggythistle · 24/06/2010 23:14

Argh, watched the follow up.

This woman is a plum of the highest order.

overlysentimental · 24/06/2010 23:25

This woman is clearly deranged.

Hideous hideous advice and can't believe she is allowed to spout this. Unmade milk!

Honestly

overlysentimental · 24/06/2010 23:26

I've had to turn it off.

Species8472 · 26/06/2010 10:07

Very depressing stuff. From what I know of friends and in-laws in Ireland the bf rates there are worse than the UK, so I feel for anyone watching that shite hoping to get good advice on bf. Start a routine in the hospital?? . Utterly crazy.

mandskh · 26/06/2010 10:39

First she says you should feed every 3 hours but then if baby is crying for a feed earlier you can feed them, but then goes on to talk about this 'unmade milk' and how you need to feed at the exact same time each day to ensure you don't experience this. Contradicts herself. Codswallop.

TimeForANewWan · 26/06/2010 13:34

Can't view link as using mn on iPhone. Should anyone mind explaining who she is and what she is on about?

MathsMadMummy · 26/06/2010 13:50

newwan - this 'expert' (what qualifications? is she a mum?) was banging on about getting baby into a routine literally asap. making them wait 3hrs for a feed even when newborn. does she not realise the newborn stomach is the size of a marble?

I thought she was being reasonable talking about routine - until she said that starting it when you got home from hospital was too late!?!

anyway, what does she think new mums did before even the sundial was invented? FFS.

MathsMadMummy · 26/06/2010 13:54

on a different note, I was quite pleased that the male presenter on both videos, is talking about breastfeeding, latching on etc without so much as batting an eyelid

SoBloodyTired · 26/06/2010 13:54

JEEEEEEEEEEZAAAAASSSSSSSSSSS!

I could weep.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/06/2010 14:08

I thought you were all over-reacting - then I decided I'd better look at the link.

I couldn't watch it all as I was getting angry slightly agitated. So much of what she has said is so wrong, and wrong not as in I disagree with her opinion, but scientifically wrong.

I am sure she will be popular though, people like routines and feeling in control

ray81 · 26/06/2010 14:11

This is awful i am currently EBF on demand my 7 week old DD and what she has said has realy scared me, surely its not dangerous to demand feed a baby and my DD goes 7 hrs over night without waking for a feed, from what she was saying this is bad also. I wish i hadnt watched it i could cry.
Please tell me she is talking crap

MathsMadMummy · 26/06/2010 14:15

I think it's crap, don't worry. is she gaining weight, producing lots of wet nappies?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/06/2010 14:21

Good review of her book here
