Wanted: Wet Nurses.

Wouldn't it be great if you could look up a wet nurse in the Yellow Pages then go for a night out even when BF? They had wet nurses (women who'd BF your baby for you) in days of yore.
My mw told me if a woman has lactated she can do so again, even ten years down the line, just as long as a baby sucks for long enough. Has anyone heard of this?

I'd be quite happy to bf another womans baby if she was happy with the arrangement! The whole men bf is weird though

Ruthiebaby · 01/07/2005 15:50

Something I've always pondered on is why men have nipples. Perhaps this answers the question.

starlover · 01/07/2005 15:52

men have nipples because ALL foetuses start off female...

isn't it odd how we will happily drink the milk of an animal and let our children drink it, but we find the thought of our own milk so odd.

we are the only species that drinks another animals milk

Ruthiebaby · 01/07/2005 15:54

I know we all start as female, but I thought that the nipples would have disappeared either by birth or through the evolution of the human species if not required....I figured they must still be there for a reason - perhaps men are meant to share in breastfeeding

eurgh - strange strange concept for me to get my head round. Could never imagine dh 'wopping one out'

starlover · 01/07/2005 15:57

ahh but there is a theory that we are all still evolving. I think it's probably quite true.

If you think about all the millions of years it took us to get this far...

Also, I guess the nipples on men aren't a hindrance... and so nature has not yet phased them out!

spidermama · 01/07/2005 15:59

Sorry to be gross but don't men's nipples ooze something hormonal in adolescence?

OP posts:
starlover · 01/07/2005 15:59

no idea... never been a man! lol
maybe it's milk!

spidermama · 01/07/2005 16:03

I wouldn't taste it.

starlover · 01/07/2005 16:03

ugh me either!

happymerryberries · 01/07/2005 16:04

Various drugs can cause a swelling of male breasts and milk production. One in 100 cases of breast cancer are in men.

spidermama · 01/07/2005 16:12

Thanks HMB. Respect to your BF knowlege.

Guess wet nurses in the past were a necessity when formula did not exist. Probably normal especially for the weathly. Orphans too would have been feed this way to I suppose.

My sister has bf my dd. She loved it cos her dd vaccum sucked. She said my dd was like a butterfly and said she felt she had a special bond with her because she had feed her

Friends have bf other friends babies.

A cat of mine got hold of my breast one day and had a good go!

I know of a woman who took prescription medicine to encourage lactation for the surrogate child the couple were waiting for - didn´t work for them.

Papillon · 01/07/2005 16:24

lol... i am mentioned in the wet nurse link

garnished with two Paps of a reasonable bigness, neither limber, nor hanging down, but betweene hard and soft;

alexsmum · 01/07/2005 18:12

a cat? thats a joke right?

mandyc66 · 01/07/2005 18:53

men are still evolving...thats true!!!

Papillon · 01/07/2005 18:56

did you see a attached?
it was a kitten and truely thought of me as her mother. She was the most amazing cat and the first time she ever went missing I thought my heart would break - she was my child. More so than any other cat I have lived with and there have been quite afew.

---just saw this on a website
Several hundred years before Kublai Khan, Emperor Ling gave his dogs royal status. Little pug-faced dogs were suckled by wet nurses, given an allowance and guarded by eunuchs.

...Life outside the square huh

crazyandconfused · 01/07/2005 19:03

My friend lost her baby during delivery and ruptured badly enough to have neede a hysterectemy, her colostrum and first few days of milk came thruogh. to cut a very long story short many years on they adopted a beautiful baby girl and breast fed her, it was one of the most beautiful moments ever my friend who would never experience this did!Wet Nursing definatly has great points(have to mention milk came back with help of hormone injections)

sweetkitty · 01/07/2005 19:42

I don't know if I could BF another baby not my own, I agree with starlover though I think it's mad that we drink the milk of cows, sheep and goats without a second thought yet get all sqeamish over human milk.

shalaa · 01/07/2005 19:50

which brings me to the question, have you tried your own breastmilk?? I have

starlover · 01/07/2005 19:50

yep! see the thread on making other things out of breastmikl!!!

spidermama · 01/07/2005 19:56

But have your Dhs and DPs tried your breastmilk. I tease mine for refusing telling him everyone else does.

OP posts:
starlover · 01/07/2005 19:57

yep! he was very interested to see how it tasted!

spidermama · 01/07/2005 19:57

Great. More ammo for my dh.

fastasleep · 01/07/2005 20:15

I had a dog that breastfed our kittens.... I wouldn't feel strange about breastfeeding someone else's baby, I'd want to know that they didn't feel at all strange about it though otherwise it would be weird! I'd let someone feed mine if they really wanted to lol..

fastasleep · 01/07/2005 20:17

On the other note, I've tried my breastmilk, DH liked my breastmilk in intimate moments, some went in a visitors tea once (I was expressing), and a little girl at playgroup picked up one of my tiny axifeed bottles and had a good chug on it!!! Her mum was mortified.
